Reflection from prior lesson: Students, in the past, have identified characters qualities and have also demonstrated
how their thinking has changed throughout the entirety of reading a text. However, now we will combine the two

Lesson Objectives: After reading the story, the students will create their own character charts with 100% accuracy.

Materials Needed:

-Character chart example


-Crayons
-Pencils
-White paper
-Inkheart book

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics: Each student at Rustic Acres is an ESL student. There are 9 students in
grades 3-8. There are 7 boys and 2 girls. There are no students on formal IEPS. However, there is one student who
has to move around in order to concentrate he is permitted to do this to a certain extent.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

2. Content Delivery (30 mins)


a. Modeling Teacher will have blank character chart up on the board. Teacher will ask student what
Elinor looks like from Inkheart, and take student input into what she looks like on the character chart.
Then, the teacher will discuss with students how Elinor was at beginning, middle and end of book .
Name three characteristics for how she was at beginning of story, in the middle and at the end.
b. Independent Practice Students will complete own character charts of characters in their personal
reading novels.
c. Guided Questions Teacher will walk around and ask guided questions.
3. Closure (5 mins)
a. Teacher and students will complete another character chart together of Dustfinger in Inkheart.

i. 1:1 Aid from Teacher Teacher will pull student who is having difficulty over to her desk, and help
him/her step by step, referring to the class example.

Reflection: The students highly enjoyed the book Inkheart, so they highly enjoyed this lesson as
well. They really liked seeing how a character changed throughout a book, and getting to map
that out. They also enjoyed creating an illustration of the character based on how they are
described in the book.
