• Bamboo as a Modern Green Engineering Material
(Material Sciences)
Bamboo is a tall grass that yields mature timber poles in just under 4 to 5 years once the
shoots come out. These have characteristic hollowness, stiffened periodically by tough
nodal plates. The bamboo pole is a classic example of a functionally graded composite
evolved by mother nature that has exceptionally high strength for a given weight. Its specific
tensile strength, in particular, of the outer skin of even 1 year old bamboo culm, is reported to
be much more than that of even high tensile steel. How ever, the creep on one hand and the
high degree of variation in properties of bamboo even with in a given specie (there are over
1200 species of which over 100 are present in India ) on the other hand need extensive
experimental studies in order that bamboo is recognized as a modern engineering material.
The study is central to our research interests, in particular with reference to bamboo based
load bearing structural elements in housing, light weight vehicular frames/bodies, wind mill
towers and frames for solar thermal and other systems, minimizing the use of energy Bamboo arch - beam - coloumn connection

intensive materials like steel, cement and man made fiber composites.

• Solar thermal - Biomass thermal hybrid systems

(Environment /Including Energy Application)
Split bamboo - metal sheet composite panel has been demonstrated by us in applications for
solar flat plate collector. These are likely to be cost effective in water heating or air drying
applications. We propose to investigate collection of large quantities of low grade solar
thermal energy using the above. Further, we propose to enhance its quality by relatively
smaller biomass thermal energy for cost effective co-generation-shaft power (for electricity)
and waste thermal energy (for process heat in food and other industries). Such
decentralized distributed systems down to under 10kWe, effectively utilizing the local
resources without having to transport light weight biomass can form the back bone of rural
micro industrial units. The possibility of tri-generation - using the waste heat for refrigeration
as well - is another area that can lead to micro cold storage rooms in rural areas that can
empower even the small farmers in realizing a fair price for their perishable produce such as
vegetables and fruits.
Integrating the solar thermal collectors with building roofs and walls is another area that can
have substantial improvement in the economics of the solar thermal power generation
systems. We expect this to happen from the energy saved in air conditioning the building
interiors.

• Hazardous waste management

Planning and decision making for waste management options (including waste prevention
and waste recycling as well as several waste treatment and disposal technologies) must be
done with due consideration to multiple objectives such as cost, environmental impacts and
risk.

Some of the other important topics to be covered

• Fuel Cells
