Introduction

A sustainable society maintains an established and healthy environment for both

humanity and biodiversity. Sustainability means living within the planet resources by balancing

our consumption, population numbers and our technology choices. The standard of living, on the

other hand, is the extent of wealth and material well-being available to a community or person.

Sustainability has a significant impact on the standard of living of a country although the GDP of

a country is regarded as the primary measure of the standard of living. Sustainability is

frequently ignored when determining the determinants of standards of living although it is one of

the several indicators of improved standards of living. A well planned environmental regulation

promotes productivity by encouraging innovative solutions to the existing problems. This essay

will discuss sustainability as an aspect that does not support a lower standard of living.

Body

Living stable and responsible requires consumption of eco-friendly products. Our natural

environment is critical to both our psychological and physical welfare and therefore by doing

practices that that protect and promote our natural environment help us expand our ability to

decorate in life. People who put more emphasis in environmental responsibility in their activities

experience high levels of living standards due to their consent of environmental sustainability.

This means that those advocating for high standards of living should emphasize more on

engaging in the protection and advancement of natural environment thus promoting sustainable

eco-system. An economic progress can, therefore, continue to prosper even when there are no

additional resources and does not necessarily mean increasing the raw material quantities to

improve our standards of living.

Recent world attention has shifted from global warming issues to the economics of

climate changes as well as stabilizing the global climate since the former has been resolved.

While we use energy in almost everything we do, depending on cheap energy and reducing

emissions of carbon gases by putting more weight on green energy ensures improvements in the

standard of living of a country. We can greatly minimize the carbon emissions without

corresponding living standard reduction. Carbon emissions can be too costly to the economy of a

country, and it is, therefore, important to find elaborate ways that promote economic growth. An

example is in the transport industry where there is shifting to the fuel-efficient hybrid cars rather

than the using the overpriced oil in vehicles. These sustainable hybrid cars are designed to

promote environmentalism and hence economically sensible choice towards improving the life

standards of individuals.

Valuing environmentalism is not the only aspect that encourages sustainability and better

living standards but also our involvement and engagement of activities that are not focused on

the acquisition of materials. Increased consumption of material things is the main contributor to

the environmental concerns and thereby lowering the wellbeing of the respective nations.

Sustainability ensures the promotion of non-material sources thereby lowering the environmental

issues that may prove too costly to the economic growth of a country. A better living standard is

realized through engaging in activities that are not concerned much with the over usage of

material items. The quest of consumption of physical items has steadily undermined our

environmental and social conditions and consequently our happiness index. This index which

largely entails the level of the living standard can be described as the ratio of the product of

satisfaction and life expectancy to that of our ecological footprint. Creating a sustainable

environment is, therefore, an integral aspect in achieving better living standards.

The income growth in a society does not necessary increase the living standard of a

country unless a comprehensive environmental approach is designed. Increased effort in

sustainable businesses and government policies ensures putting more prominence in renewable

energy thereby minimizing waste in energy, food, and other commodities. Such waste

minimization promotes and empowers other people to live in a sustainable standard and a happy

manner. The most influencing factor to economic growth is the happiness which is achieved

through sustainability. People must understand the nature of economic development and

economic activity to the viability of the modern society. Exploitation and accumulation of capital

equipment to the extent of converting many natural resources to physical products of human use

to achieve better living standards is not possible. This is because the economic growth cannot

endure indefinitely due to the idea of diminishing returns. This means a sustainable use of natural

resources is the only thing that can make us achieve better living standards.

Economic progress and living standards can be increased even without necessarily adding

more resources. Sustainability promotes the technological advancement of a country which will

mean doing the same way in a more effective and innovative manner to increase production.

Once a new method of doing things is discovered it ensures improved the way of producing

goods and services which will be reused indefinitely thereby becoming non-subject to the law of

diminishing returns. Once we change our perspectives to technology, thinking concerning

economic progress will come naturally and shift our concentration to the bettering our living

standards. This entails that the use of technology in doing activities will better the people’s lives

in all aspect unlike when using the physical inputs as a form of production where the living

standards won’t necessarily improve due to diminishing marginal returns.

Putting more weight in energy efficiency by phasing out the items that greatly consumes

energy is another aspect that develops standards of living consumers. This makes a huge

economic sense in embracing all sorts of environmental sustainability that provides incentives

for innovation and economic feasibility that are indicators of improved standards of living.

Sustainability promotes commitment to finding broad ways of doing things through a systematic

policy setting. Sustainable farming practices are another example that not only lead to healthy

and more nutritious foods but also local farmers and their businesses leading to better living. All

these sustainability practices supplemented by a stable climate will only ensure a steady

improvement in standards of living across the whole world.

Conclusion,

Promotion of sustainability is not only good towards achieving economic progress of a

country but also in raising the living standards of the respective persons. The level of the GDP of

a country cannot necessarily denote to the social welfare and hence the living standards of the

inhabitants of that country. Sustainability practices entail a more diverse way of doing things

while increasing profitability thereby ensuring improvement in living standards. The myth that

sustainability leads to a lower living that is full of making sacrifices and less comfortable life is

in fact not true. The main theme of environmental sustainability is to develop and create better

alternative ways for people to live better lives and ensure a healthy future but does not mean a

lower standard of living.
