5). Uwaga: dwa nagłówki zostały podane dodatkowo i nie pasują do żadnego
fragmentu tekstu.

A The first conclusions

B Hugging therapy
C Speaking through hugs

D Not only emotions

E A desire to know more
F A complicated experiment
G A mixture of feelings all in one place

1_____
Hugging is a particularly intimate and intense way of expressing emotions. It is also natural for
every human being to need hugs from time to time. But research shows that our hugs vary as
a result of several different factors. These include the emotions experienced at the time or who
and why we are hugging. A team of psychologists have conducted a study in order to examine
one particular aspect of hugging. They wanted to check why some hugs are made from the left
hand side and some from the right hand side.
2______
First, the scientists observed the embraces that take place at international airports. Why
there? Because they assumed that they would see individuals experiencing contrasting
emotions in the same location. At the departures gate, many travellers exhibited negative
emotions when saying goodbye to their families and worrying about the flight. At the arrivals
gate, their emotions were usually the opposite when they saw their loved ones again.
3______
The researchers came to the conclusion that people prefer right hand sided hugs when
sharing positive emotions and choose left hand sided hugs when experiencing negative ones.
But what if they choose the right hand side because they are right handed and this side is
more comfortable for them?
4______
In order to answer this question, scientists asked a large group of test participants to embrace
a mannequin. However, first they had to listen to a funny, sad or neutral story. It was essential
to check beforehand if people were right or left-handed. The conclusion was that it is a
combination of both our feelings and our handedness that determines how we hug others.
5______
Hugs build trust and help conquer feelings of loneliness, isolation and anger. There are also
some health benefits.
It is said that as a result of hugging someone for a few seconds, hormones are released that
may temporarily reduce blood pressure. So, no matter if you do it from the right hand side or
the left hand side, it’s important to hug your friends and family from time to time!

3 warn the reader against some of the drawbacks of a particular career? _
4 describe current changes in the business world? _
5 mention a demographic trend? _
A
The world is constantly becoming more and more complex and so are the job trends.
Some professions have disappeared completely or have been replaced by others, which
are often more specialised professions that are increasingly considered to have the
potential of being long-lasting and secure. Here are some examples to consider while
thinking of your career path.

B
According to the statistics, an ageing population will create an increased demand for jobs
connected to the healthcare sector. Therefore, healthcare education and related skills are
currently a priority. Those high school graduates who want to work in this sector can choose
between being a highly skilled professional like a doctor, a nurse, a physiotherapist or a
pharmacist, or a less well-paid worker such as a home help or dietary aide. Whatever your
choice, it’s essential that you enjoy working with people and possess some scientific and
medical knowledge.

C
Another growing sector is Information Technology, which has helped to transform the way we
do business and communicate. This trend is bound to continue and expand, so IT specialists
such as programmers, website creators and administrators or graphic designers will be in high
demand. If you are an analytical thinker or a creative problem solver, it makes sense to aim for

these jobs and show off your potential. Remember that, technology is constantly changing, so
you will be expected to keep up with each and every one of the new developments.

D
As many companies conduct their business on a worldwide scale, they need individuals who
are able to deal with both international and local laws, tax systems and other related
regulations. The definite advantage of taking this career path is the opportunity it brings of
visiting faraway places. However, don’t be too hasty in deciding as you will also have to study
law and foreign languages and may well be expected to relocate to several different countries
over the course of your career. So, observe how the trends are changing and examine all of
the various options before you decide.

brakujący fragment (A–F),
tak aby otrzymać logiczny i spójny tekst. Uwaga: jedno zdanie zostało podane
dodatkowo i nie pasuje

A Even though Taylor Swift and Mariah Carey are both known for their singing skills, they
ended up deciding
to insure their legs.
B So, he took out a policy which would pay out 1 million pounds if a customer were injured or
killed by a ghost.
C An English football fan took out insurance to cover him for any traumatic experience during
the World Cup.
D These may include legs for footballers, hands for goalkeepers, feet and ankles for ice-
skaters.
E Celebrities have also been known to insure their body parts against accidents and changes
brought on by ageing.
F They cover luggage loss, plane delay, medical expenses or emergency hospital care.

Most of us are probably familiar with life insurance and home insurance, but not everybody
knows that it is also possible to take out some more unusual insurance policies, as long as
your bank balance is big enough. Famous sportspeople, for instance, often choose to be
insured for career ending injuries that affect particular parts of the body. (1) _____ Of course,
it’s always better to have the insurance and not need it, but in case something happens, it
might be very useful. (2) _____ As a rule, they insure those parts which have become their
trademarks, so the most popular are usually legs and smiles. (3) _____ Why? Probably
because they use their legs to perform on stage. Concert tours are a big part of the music
industry, so without the ability to dance singers could lose a lot of money.
Another type of special insurance can be found in the travel industry. Regular travellers tend to
choose the standard policies offered by travel agencies. (4) _____ However, if you are
planning to explore, for example, Sri Lanka, you’d better insure yourself against injuries
caused by falling coconuts. This unfortunate event causes about 150 deaths annually.
Insurance archives also contain stranger policies, such as those against being kidnapped by
aliens or being attacked by a vampire. One English hotel owner took out insurance after being
convinced he had seen a ghost at his bar.
(5) _____ No matter how bizarre these policies are, one is certain, by taking them out and
paying regular premiums, someone was looking for a way of reducing the worry and stress.

A. Dangerous consequences B. How it works

C. When to avoid D. Natural radiation

E. First application F. Usage in medicine

1 ____

In 1895 Wilhelm Roentgen, a German physicist, discovered and described a form of

electromagnetic radiation which is emitted when matter is bombarded with fast-moving electrons.
He called it X-ray, because it had, until that moment, been unknown. A few weeks after the
discovery, an X-ray image helped to picture the bones in a young skater who had fallen and hurt
his wrist. It was the first ever application of X-ray in a medical diagnosis. Since then, radiation has
become invaluable in medicine.

2 ____

Most of us have had an X-ray at some point in our lives. The most familiar type of X-ray imaging is
radiography, used to spot broken bones, teeth and the chest. To produce an image, the patient is
placed in front of a device which emits the X-rays and illuminates a specified body part. Because

calcium in the bones absorbs X-rays, any bones appear white on the image. The surrounding
parts, such as soft tissue or gasses, appear as black patches.

3 ____

The fact that X-ray imaging has been used in medicine for over a hundred years shows how
valuable the method has been. First of all, X-ray imaging helps doctors diagnose and then monitor
any treatment without the need for surgical invasion. It also serves as a helpful guide whenever any

On the other hand, there are some risks attached to X-rays. They can cause mutation of the DNA
and may lead to cancer. Some scientists claim that the rise in cancer-related illnesses that have
been diagnosed in the world is connected with the increased use of CT scans in medical
procedures. For this reason, X-rays are officially classified as a cause of cancer by the World
Health Organisation. Exposure to high radiation may also result in vomiting, fainting or hair loss in
patients. However, the standard level of radiation is so low that it is not believed to lead to any
serious long-term side effects.

Although they only cover 2% of the Earth’s surface, rainforests have been under discussion for
years. Why? Well, to begin with, they are the Earth's oldest and most diverse ecosystems.
Despite covering such a small area, they provide a home to more than half of all the world’s
plant and animal species. Furthermore, rainforests are the source of many of the items we use
on a daily basis, both in food and medicine. They cleanse the air, absorb dangerous
greenhouse gases, and stabilise the climate, thus playing an invaluable role in sustaining life
on Earth. And finally, whether or not you are a fan of nature, you cannot disagree with the fact
that rainforests are stunningly beautiful.
Yet rainforests have suffered some severe destruction over the last few decades. 27% – more
than a quarter – of the Amazon rainforest will have been cut down by 2030 if the current rate
of deforestation continues. While for much of human history deforestation of the area was

mainly the result of farming in which trees were felled to cultivate land for local needs, the
latter part of the 20th century witnessed an increase in deforestation which was driven by
large-scale agriculture and industry. As a result, vast areas of forests have been dug for
minerals, drained for building houses, or cleared for other construction purposes. How come
nothing is being done about it? Well, there is! It seems, however, that the action that is being
taken is still not enough. Pressure from environmentalists, public and private initiatives aimed
at raising awareness and satellite monitoring are just a few examples of activities which have
had an effect but which are unable to reverse the trend completely. If the problem is not fought
from within and the campaigns are not supported by the communities living in the area, no
significant change will occur.
Hence the idea of a global initiative. The Rainforest Aid Programme is directed at college
students around the world who would like to contribute to the well-being of the planet. Our aim
is not only to protect the rainforest itself but also to fight for the rights of the indigenous people
and change the rainforest initiative into something resembling the human rights movement.
This is the strategy that we believe will have the biggest influence. We are now recruiting
ambassadors to educate young people on indigenous people’s rights, deforestation, and the
value of protecting the rainforest. So if you want to do something meaningful and get engaged
in our project – send us an email. Who knows, perhaps you will become one of the Earth’s first
human rights heroes and a climate champion all in one.
