The formulation of relative effort, endurance time and recovery time are provided in the
following sections.
The Percent Maximum Voluntary Contraction (%MVC) is the percentage ratio of the
applied force (as either a force or a resulting moment on a joint) to the MVC for the same
muscle group in the same posture and expressed in the same units.
Finding the endurance time from a %MVC begins with the x-axis and is read from the
left curve to left axis for %MVC between 5 and 45% or from the right curve and axis for
%MVC from 45% to 100%. For a required contraction time, the greatest %MVC is read
by starting from the left axis for time between 1 and 6 min to the left curve or from the
right axis to the right curve for times less than 1 min.

%MVC
A family of curves are provided in the next two figures based on this equation. The x-
axis is the contraction time, y-axis is the minimum recovery time, and the curves are
decreasing levels of %MVC reading from left to right. One figure is for shorter
contractions times (less than 2 min) and the other is for longer contraction times (2 to 7
min). For a specific contraction time read up to the %MVC curve, either for an
individual or for a design strength, and read the minimum required recovery time [min].
The family of curves can also be used (1) to specify the maximum contraction time for an
allowed recovery time at a specific %MVC or (2) to specify a maximum %MVC for a
given contraction time and recovery time. Generally, the curves stop near the endurance
time for a specific %MVC curve.

Observational Scale
Moore and Garg have published a Strain Index to assess the risk of MSDs to the hands
and wrists. A component of the assessment process is the level of intensity of the effort
in five categories for which an approximate %MVC is associated. While this was not the
intention of the investigators, it may provide some insight to the relative effort for the
preliminary design of static work.
