Some terms with the word “Business” and their sample sentences

1. To mind one’s own business; is an idiom in English which means ‘to concern oneself
only with what is of interest to oneself and not interfere in the affairs of others’, in which
we can use this idiom to tell someone to focus on his own life, not on ours. Sample
sentence: “I really know how to deal with my problems, so please, mind your own
business!”
2. Bad business; refers to the situation when someone lost his job, e.g. “It’ll be a bad
business for fishermen when the water pollution is getting worse. Bad business can also
means any sort of morally ambiguous activity; anything displeasant; and criminal acts,
e.g. “Amir got into some bad business with his friends last week”.
3. Dirty business; means as the practice of unethical methods. Sample sentences: “Politics
is a dirty business in Turkey”, “Money lending was considered to be a dirty business”,
“War is a dirty business”, etc.
4. Personal business; is matters of personal concern, in which the concern refers to
something that interests someone because it is important or affects him. Sample sentence:
“Mr. Ahmad does not allow his employees to use the telephone for personal business”.
5. Business hours; refers to the hours of the day in which a shop or a company is open for
business. Sample sentence: “My uncle has decided to extend his restaurant’s business
hours”.
6. Monkey (funny) business; is frivolous or mischievous behavior. It can also means as
improper or underhanded conduct; trickery, e.g. “The government is levying fine on
those who have been doing monkey business by tampering with their electricity meters”.
7. Annual business; refers to the kind of business that is run once every year. Sample
sentence: “Selling fireworks in New Year’s Eve becomes Bobby’s annual business”.
8. To be in business; means to be ready and able to start doing something that one planned.
It can also mean to get involved in any business activity. Sample sentences: “We are
really excited to be in business with you”, “He is so lucky to be back in business”, “Once
we get the computer installed, we’ll be in business”.
9. To be out of business; refers to a shop or company that has to stop trading because it is
not making enough money, e.g. “Due to the financial crisis, hundreds of firms are going
to be out of business”.
10. Booming business; refers to kind of business that soon becomes a trend and shows a
significant sales growth. Sample sentence: “During the Covid-19 pandemic, health
insurance becomes booming business”.
11. To build up business; means to start running a new business, e.g. “My friend told me
that it was hard for him to build up business during winter months”.
12. Business competition; is the contest or rivalry among the companies selling similar
products and/or targeting the same target audience to get more sales, increases revenue,
and gain more market share as compared to other. Sample sentence: “There has always
been business competition between the auto manufacturers”.
13. Business corporation; is a business or an organization that has a legally separate
existence from the people who run it. Business corporation can also refer to a large
company or a group of companies that are controlled as a single business or organization.
Sample sentence: “Leo’s father has a business corporation with over 500 employees in 5
different cities”.
