SMART CHARGING & V2G

SMART CHARGING- It is a series of intelligent functionalities to control the EV charging

power in order to create a flexible, sustainable, low cost and efficient charging.

Benefits of Smart charging

• Increases the flexibility of charging
• Higher utilization rates of fixed assets
• Efficient utilization of energy in distribution network
• Make electric vehicles more sustainable
• Provide new revenue streams to EV owners

V2G- Using the electric vehicle battery to feed power back to the grid using a bidirectional
EV charger
• Vehicle to Grid- V2G
• Vehicle to Home- V2H V2X
• Vehicle to Building- V2B
• Vehicle to Load- V2L
o Vehicle-to-grid is currently not possible using AC chargers due to the technological
limitations. This is because a bidirectional onboard charger is needed for vehicle-to-
grid, but most current EVs only have a unidirectional charger but it is implemented in
DC chargers using high level of communication between vehicle and charger using
PLC (power line communication) and CAN (control area network).
V2X Advantages and Challenges

Advantages Challenges
1. Storage for renewables 1. Bidirectional charger

2. Reduce peak demand 2. Battery degradation

3. Emergency power 3. ICT infrastructure

4. Ancillary services 4. Standardization & regulatory

framework

Example- Applications of Smart charging

• Local load balancing
 Adjust time/power according to load
 Balance multiple charge points with
priority.
