III ESSAY

1. Give at least three issues presented by Rizal in his novel Noli Me Tangere that in your
observation are still present today. (10 pts.)

Issues presented in Noli Me Tangere Observations in the Present

1. Corruption - In today's government
corruption is prevalent as a
result of dishonesty and abuse
of power by government
officials.
2. Abuse - Different forms of abuse such
as physical, sexual, and abuse
of power are seen in the
Philippines today. Due to the
incompetence of the Philippine
government, cases of abuse
are increasing everyday.
3. Poverty - Poverty is an unending
problem in the Philippines.
One of the main reasons for
poverty in the Philippines is
corrupt politicians. They use
their power and utilize
government funds for
self-interest.

4. Lack of Education - Due to the government's

incompetency to provide
funding, lack of education is
still a problem in today's
society.
5. Crime - In the Philippines, there is a
high rate of violent crime,
particularly in Manila. I believe
that economic factors such as
lack of education,
unemployment, and poverty
lead to the increase of criminal
activities. Moreover, I believe
that corruption of the
politicians also caused these
crimes to occur because of
their lack to serve and provide
for Filipino citizens.

2. Name five (5) characters in El Filibusterismo that symbolize the current situations of the
society. (10 pts.)

Characters in El Filibusterismo Current Situations of Society

1. Simoun - Simoun represents the
revolutionaries or the
modern-day heroes today
against the injustice acts of
the government.
2. Basilio - Basilio is a representative of
the younger generation who
hopes that education would
improve their social and
economic status in the future.
He symbolizes youth who are
optimistic and hopeful despite
life’s challenges.
3. Isagani - Isagani is the symbol of the
youth who are idealistic due
to having an immense
patriotism towards the
country.
4. Señor Pasta - Señor Pasta represents those
people who are only generous
and sympathetic to the rich
and powerful. With this kind
of attitude, he symbolizes
people who are self-centered
which affects their sense of
patriotism.
5. Kabesang Tales - Kabesang Tales portrays an
average Filipino who is
content with living a simple
life. He also symbolizes the
natives and farmers whose
lands were taken by the
selfishness of the
government.

3. Make your own conclusion about the authenticity of Rizal’s retraction, and present your
arguments. (10 pts.)

CONCLUSION:
I conclude that Jose Rizal did not retract any of his writings against the Roman Catholic.

ARGUMENTS:
1. No one and members of the family have seen the “original” text except the
newspapers
2. No names of Witnesses as to the Copy of Fr. Vicente Balaguer as the prime
source sent to Fr. Pio Pi.
3. Inconsistency of the discovered “original” document on May 18, 1935, by
archdiocesan archivist Fr. Manuel Garcia.
4. Another piece of evidence as to Rizal did not retract is that when Father Balaguer
came to terms with that he married Jose and Josephine after Jose had signed the
retraction paper, however, there were no marriage certificate or public record
shown that could prove Father Balaguer’s statements.
5. The copy was sent to Fr. Pio Pi in 1910 for verification of “an exact copy of the
retraction written and signed by Rizal”- Fr, Pio is not certain of the handwriting
and it was not verified in his sworn statement.
4. Provide at least five arguments in defense for Rizal’s crime of rebellion against the
Spanish Government. (10 pts.)

YOUR ARGUMENTS:
1. He could not be guilty of rebellion, for he advised Dr. Pio Valenzuela in Dapitan,
not to rise in revolution.
2. He did not correspond with radical, revolutionary elements.
3. The revolutionists used his name without his knowledge. If he were guilty he
could have escaped to Singapore.
4. If he had a hand in the revolution, he could have escaped in a Moro vinta and
would not have built a home, a hospital, and brought lands in Dapitan.
5. The La Liga Filipina did not serve the purpose of the revolutionists, otherwise
they would have supplanted it with the Katipunan.
