EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Clean and Healthy environment is essential for healthy and happy living hence

many strategies have been made on every different city to efficiently clean and

protect the environment. Now that we are living in a society wherein technology

rules everything around us will be easier to figure out the response will be more

accessible to us and penetrating into an innovated strategies will be easier

despite the uncertainties. In this there are strategy that will reflect more appealing

and effective in a way. Solid waste management is a challenge across the globe

due to the increasing diversity of waste characteristics and lack of effective

implementation of consistent waste policies accompanied by changing lifestyles,

increase production processes and rapid urbanization.

This research seeks to understand the significance of filling the gap and

reviewing this practice on developing and have a tangible method that would

recommend for other cities having a difficulty on deciding what would be the best

strategic guidelines for an efficient waste management refrain unnecessary

environmental crisis also to protect residents’ health.

Researchers comes up with a solution that can attain the main objectives

which gathering enough data through Quantitative Research which allows the

study to collect enough information through a set of questions via an online

survey that is a self-made validated questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION

The study focused on the comparison addresses the strategic

development plans of the studied cities. Thus, solutions for high-income cities

might not be suitable for developing cities yet this study can provide

economically feasible solutions considering the contents of comparative

analysis of both cities. These include preparation of Barangay strategic solid

waste management plan, organization of Barangay solid waste management

team and association of classes D and E, putting up a material recovery facility,

and development of appropriate technology to reduce waste. The discrepancy

in resolving uncertain matters defining the environmental impact of how the city

handles the wastes. How is waste collection done in those communities? And

What are the most effective ways of preventing people from complying with the

proposal. The implementation of a waste management program in

establishments is done for more than just legal compliance. Essentially, such a

program reduces or minimizes pollution in the air, water, and land. It also

improves garbage collection efficiency because the LGU of San Pedro Laguna

and Muntinlupa City no longer needs to collect waste from establishments,

making landfill unnecessary. It provides a source of livelihood in the same way

that it acts as an environmental control mechanism. Moreover, Effective waste

management allows you to reduce your company's environmental impact.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

This study is designed to determine the effects of Comparative Analysis

Between the Two Cities more specifically, the research sought to answer

the following questions:

1. What are the different strategies on waste management used by San

Pedro Laguna and Muntinlupa City?

2. What is the level of compliance on waste management programs in

these two cities?

3. Is there a difference in the level of compliance on waste?

Management program in two cities?

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

● This research aims to identify the similarities and

differences on waste management between the cities of

San Pedro, Laguna and Muntinlupa.

● It intends to foster the environmental capacity of both cities to further

improve and implement an effective waste management program in

order to improve both communities with the same study.

● Furthermore, to compare two cities in order to validate what waste

management program would be used to effectively help improve

lifestyle and livelihood in these two communities. The study will aid

ineffective waste management to a more sufficient program that

could actually contribute from the development of both cities.

HYPOTHESIS

This study was anchored on the following hypothesis:

Ha: There is no difference between the waste management program in

San Pedro, Laguna and Muntinlupa City

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The study focused on Comparative Analysis on Waste Management

Program Between Two Cities [San Pedro, Laguna and Muntinlupa City].

According to Ghanimeh (2019) Despite the large body of literature comparing

prevailing waste management practices at different locations focusing on

baseline and strategic plans. It analyses the state of municipal solid waste

(MSW) management in six selected cities with different geographic locations

and socioeconomic setups. As a first comparison, the current MSW profiles are

analyzed to pinpoint the prevailing challenges. From the perspective of local

government units, the main obstacles in such low- and middle-income cities

seem to be the lack of regulations and, most noticeably, the inefficient structure

of the waste management sector. Even though in Innovative Technologies there

are issues that seem to be spreading still at this time and seem difficult to

resolve. Nowadays some Local Government Units seek to find an alternative

way on how to rectify a certain issue such as managing wastes. Equally what

the Municipality of San Pedro, Laguna and the Muntinlupa City is implementing.

11
PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MUNTINLUPA

College of Business Administration

These two cities have been implementing the waste management of their

respective scope, the municipality of San Pedro, have Resolution Approving a

Ten-Year Solid Waste Management Plan of the City Province of Laguna

otherwise known. Even so living in the era where rapid change is rampant there

is still a gap that has to have a compact resolution aside from aiming a good

strategy giving them both communities the discretion and capabilities to engage

themselves into a new way of alteration.

A proper waste disposal plan ensures safe, sustainable waste disposal

practices, preventing waste contamination of nearby soil and groundwater. Most

businesses want to be environmentally conscious, responsible, and long-term.

According to the global organization Business for Social Responsibility (BSR),

climate change is a "very significant" sustainability focus for 52% of companies.

But a strong waste management program ensures that your company complies

with local and federal laws. When your company is busy, it may not always have

time to keep up with regulatory changes and nuances. However, if you work

with a professional waste management company, the professionals can also

keep you up to date on any relevant changes in the law and ensure your

facility's compliance. Effective waste management allows you to reduce your

company's environmental impact. A proper waste disposal plan ensures safe,

sustainable waste disposal practices, preventing waste contamination of nearby

soil and groundwater. Knowing how to dispose of waste properly is essential for

many reasons. Giving them this study that focuses on maintaining and

improving the both cities waste management program engaging them to an

innovative idea that can help not just the community but the city.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses and defined how the study conducted on both

cities of San Pedro Laguna and Muntinlupa. It covers sampling design and

statistical treatment of data that used to analyzed and further explained how the

waste management program will impacted both cities in a comparative way.

included in the research’s population. These populations were the persons who

will be tasked with providing responses to the given survey.

RESPONDENTS AND PLACE OF THE STUDY

The study took effect on the cities of San Pedro Laguna and Muntinlupa.

Therefore, the respondents were the residents of both cities in each barangay.

Selected at least 3 respondents aged between 25-50 years old in 9 barangays

of Muntinlupa City and at least 1 respondent aged 20-50 years old in 27

barangays of San Pedro Laguna. The respondents were mainly be those who

work.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The researchers used simple random sampling techniques and select the

respondents from San Pedro Laguna and Muntinlupa City. The technique relies

13

on using a selection method that provides each participant with an equal chance

of being selected, giving each participant the same probability of being selected.

SAMPLING SIZE

The sample was based on a prior statistical power analysis using

G*Power Suite with a power =0.95, effect size = 0.50 and alpha .05 to yield a

sample size of 42. Therefore, a proportionate type of random sampling was used

in order to get an exact replica of the target population. San Pedro Laguna has

27 Barangays and 326,001 population according to 2020 census. While

Muntinlupa City has 9 Barangays and 452,493 population according to 2020-

2021 census. The researchers used simple random sampling where they will

randomly select a subset of participants from Muntinlupa and San Pedro Laguna

City.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The study was a quantitative type of research. Quantitative research is

defined as the systematic examination of phenomena through the collection of

quantifiable data and the application of statistical, mathematical, or

computational techniques. It was the appropriate research for this kind of study

that deals with statistical facts. The method that used by the researchers on the

other hand, is Comparative Research; a type of quantitative research that

sought to make comparisons between two related or non-related studies.

SCALES AND STATISTICAL TREATMENT

The statistics used by the researcher’s combination of numerical

and categorical data which is an ordinal type of statistical data. And is a

combination of interval statistics and descriptive statistics. Frequency

Distribution Table (FDT) is used for descriptive statistics for frequency count,

determining the mean that is one of the measures of central frequency and

also determining the Standard Deviation (SD) that is one of the measures of

variability. While in inferential statistics, T-test was used for inferring or

hypothesis testing. Frequency Distribution Table (FDT) is a chart that

summarizes value and their frequency. It is also a table that displays the

frequency of various outcomes in a sample. The FDT is a statistical

treatment that is mostly used for summarizing categorical variables. The

researchers will use four-point Likert Scale to measure the factors of

Comparative on Waste Management System Between Cities of San Pedro

Laguna and Muntinlupa City.

18
PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MUNTINLUPA

College of Business Administration

1. What are the different strategies on waste management used by San Pedro

Laguna and Muntinlupa City?

1. Based on the data acquired, engaging with waste workers such as

street sweepers and garbage collectors is an example of different strategies that

San Pedro Laguna and Muntinlupa City used on waste management. They also

have projects that helps their cities to free from pollution and reduce waste as

well.

2. What is the level of compliance on waste management programs in these two

cities?

2. The results showed that San Pedro Laguna and Muntinlupa City are

strictly observed when it comes to implementing the policy on waste

management program. It also showed the respondents strongly agrees that the

implementation of waste management program in their cities are indeed

effective.

3. Is there a difference in the level of compliance on waste management?

3. In the survey that researchers conducted, it showed that there is no

difference in the level of practice on waste management program between San

Pedro Laguna and Muntinlupa City.

CONCLUSIONS

The researchers concluded After the survey that the researchers

conducted, the results show that there are equal respondents from Muntinlupa

City and San Pedro Laguna, it also shows that each of the said cities have both

19
PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MUNTINLUPA

College of Business Administration

successfully implemented different Waste Management Program effectively

hence, the study’s hypothesis; there is difference between the Waste

Management Program of Muntinlupa City and San Pedro Laguna.

The researchers concluded:

1. That garbage collector and street sweeper are the most effective waste

control that Muntinlupa City has implemented. While, Garbage collectors from

San Pedro roam around every morning and at noon collecting and disposing

trash in town. Street sweepers on the other hand, can be seen everywhere

maintaining the cleanliness of their cities.

2. The results shows that the Waste Management Program of Muntinlupa

City are expert and practiced when it comes to managing and handling their

waste. On the other hand, San Pedro utilizes manpower when it comes to waste

disposal. Respondents highly agrees that Waste Management Program is

effectively implemented on their cities.

3. The researchers concluded that most of the respondents between San

Pedro Laguna and Muntinlupa City agree that waste management program is

being implemented effectively. Although there's some difference in level of

effectiveness, practice, and compliance on some aspects like flood control, tree

planting, waste minimization we're the result shows how Muntinlupa City was

slightly efficient on those aspects. However, San Pedro Laguna's result shows a

good progress on Street sweeper, Garbage collector, Junk shop workers, and

Scavenger.

20
PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MUNTINLUPA

College of Business Administration

4. The researchers revealed the least managed aspects of waste

management program on San Pedro Laguna and Muntinlupa City and provide

information on strategic planning, practice, and compliance for the good progress

of waste management program.

RECOMMENDATION

After a thorough analysis of data, the following recommendations are

hereby made:

1. This research study suggests that Muntinlupa City and San Pedro

Laguna should focus on tree-planting as well for flood control and for a free-

pollution surrounding. Waste that will be collected can be used as fertilizers

minimizing the city’s garbage and junk. Tree-planting can reduce waste on both

cities and manage flood control as well.

2. Given that Muntinlupa City and San Pedro Laguna both implemented

Waste Management Program effectively, each city should create a new scope of

practice, with higher training levels but a larger range of products and services

authorized, with supervision by the Department of Waste Management &

Pollution Control.

3. The study shown that the respondents which also the residents of said

places are fully aware of how waste management program been implemented to

their place especially where it needs the improvement. This research was

informative in a way of sharing strategic plans, practices, and compliance on both

Muntinlupa City and San Pedro Laguna's waste management program.

21
PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MUNTINLUPA

College of Business Administration

4. Afterwards the researchers recommend to the people in charge of

waste management program to give more attention for particular aspects needs

to be improve such as providing more places wherein people may put their

trashes and have an indication which can the citizen be aware on how waste

management should be done in a community.

5. The two cities must provide a clean-up drive which can be gather per

block on every barangay on that matter people would be aware on how hard it is

to take good care of our surroundings.

Give some tasks to SK team wherein they should conduct an activity per

barangay regarding waste segregation and awareness by that people will know

that managing of our daily waste is always a residual on doing this thing and

letting them know on what should they do on that residual waste.

Awareness must be the key, if both communities will conduct some

activities like recycle for a cost, papers turn to trees and plastic can be a

lifesaving. It may be a difficult start but with unity nothing is impossible.

Note. Student's t-test.

Table 9 shows the independent sample t-test on the level of

practice on waste management program in two cities. Using t-test for

independent samples, the results revealed that there are no differences on

the level of practice on the waste management program in the two cities.

Since the p-values of disposal, energy, recovery, recycling, reuse and

prevention was higher than the significance level at .05. Therefore, we will

reject the alternative in favor of the null hypothesis, that there are no

differences on the level of practice on waste management program in two

cities. Daniel M., Andrew., B. & Baizhan, L. (2016) A comparative analysis
