THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 1

INTRODUCTION
1. THE BIBLE BEGINS AND ENDS WITH FRUIT
A. Through fruit, man came to know sin. This was the beginning of sorrow, tears,
heartaches, and rebellion against God.
Genesis 2:15-17, And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the
garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
v. 16, And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the
garden thou mayest freely eat:
v. 17, But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it:
for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
B. In the New Jerusalem one tree will produce and bear twelve different fruits
twelve times a year.
Revelation 22:1-2, And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as
crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
v. 2, In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the
tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every
month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
1) The number twelve is three times four.
2) Three is the number of perfection.
3) Four is the earth number.
C. God has made triple provision for every need in eternity.
1) Total fullness
2) Everything is going to be fulfilled excellently, completely, and gloriously.

2. JESUS CURSED THE TREE WHICH PRODUCED NO FRUIT

Jesus taught by work and example that trees which produce no fruit should be
destroyed.
A. by word
Luke 13:6-7, He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted
in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
v. 7, Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I
come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it
the ground?
The tree would not respond to the goodness that was given it.
B. by example
Matthew 21:19, And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and
found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on
thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

3. JESUS COMMANDS US TO “BEAR MUCH FRUIT”

A. Not only are worthless branches removed, productive branches are pruned to
make them bear abundantly. God wants us to bear the fruit of the Spirit always.
We are re-born to bear this kind of fruit. It comes from God and grows in our
lives.
John 15:1-2, I am the true vine, and My Father is the husbandman.
v. 2, Every branch in Me that beareth not fruit He taketh away and every
branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
B. Jesus is the vine that supports the branches. The redeemed are the branches.
Without the Spirit of God flowing through us, strengthening and nourishing us,
we cannot produce fruit.
John 15:5, I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in Me, and I in
him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing.
C. We have been chosen by Christ to bear eternal fruit for the kingdom of heaven.
Not just preachers, but all who are called to salvation must bear fruit.
John 15:16, Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you,
that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that
whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

4. PAUL DIRECTS US TO BRING FORTH FRUIT

A. Paul also teaches that we should be one with Christ in order to bring forth fruit.
We must be dead to sin and the law and alive unto Christ.
B. We are to be filled with the fruits of righteousness.
Philippians 1:11, Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by
Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
C. When we abide in Christ, we are strengthened by His power, patiently
producing the fruit of longsuffering and joy.
Colossians 1:11, Strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power,
unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.

5. OUR FRUIT SHALL RIPEN IN THE RIGHT SEASON

We will not bear fruit at the wrong time, weakening us, and creating unsatisfactory
fruit.
Psalm 1:3, And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth
forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth
shall prosper.
A. The church is entering into the greatest harvest the world has ever known.
B. You can bear fruit and give it to the world.

6. WE SHALL CONTINUE TO BEAR FRUIT IN OLD AGE

As we grow older, we shall continue to flourish and be productive.

Psalm 92:13-14, Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the
courts of our God.
v. 14, They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;

7. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS IN RIGHTEOUSNESS AND TRUTH

Our fruit will be good, coming righteously and truthfully.
Ephesians 5:9, (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and
truth.)
The fruit of the Spirit is built on goodness, righteousness, and truth.

8. JEWS AND GENTILES ARE COMPARED TO A FRUIT TREE

A. The Gentiles are grafted from a wild branch to the cultured branch of the Jews.
Romans 11:16-17, For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the
root be holy, so are the branches.
v. 17, And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive
tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and
fatness of the olive tree;
B. The original branches (the Jews) were pruned and discarded because of their
unbelief, and new branches (the Gentiles) were grafted in because of their faith.
Romans 11:18-20, Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou
bearest not the root, but the root thee.
v. 19, Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted
in.
v. 20, Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by
faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
C. God will not allow unbelieving, unproductive branches to remain. He will
remove any branch that does not reflect goodness and graft in again any branch
that turns from unbelief.
Romans 11:21-24, For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest
he also spare not thee.
v. 22, Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell,
severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise
thou also shalt be cut off.
v. 23, And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for
God is able to graft them in again.
v. 24, For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and
wert grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall
these, which be the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

9. A TREE IS KNOWN BY ITS FRUIT

We, too, shall be known by our fruit. If we are righteous, we shall yield good works;
if we are corrupt, we shall produce evil.
Matthew 7:17, Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree
bringeth forth evil fruit.
A. What kind of fruit do you produce?
B. As sons and daughters of God, we now bear fruit unto our Lord Jesus Christ.

THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 2

THE MYSTERY OF BEARING

SPIRITUAL FRUIT
INTRODUCTION:
Against spiritual fruit and righteous conduct neither the courts of heaven nor the tribunals
of earth have ever passed negative laws.
In the Gospel of John chapter 15, Christ compared Himself to the true vine of eternal life.
His disciples were compared to the living branches of that vine.

READING:
John 15:1-2, 5, I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
v. 2, Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that
beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
v. 5, I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same
bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Galatians 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith,
v. 23, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

1. THE IDENTITY OF THE FRUIT IS IN THE VINE

Christ must produce good fruit.

Matthew 7:17, Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree
bringeth forth evil fruit.

9
The Mystery of Bearing Spiritual Fruit
Lesson 2

2. THE QUALITY OF THE FRUIT IS IN THE VINE

A healthy plant will create superior fruit. Christ is that plant which produces fruit
unlike any other.
Matthew 7:18, A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree
bring forth good fruit.

3. SAMENESS OF VINE AND BRANCHES

The same vital sap which flows in the vine also flows to the branches. The specific
life in the branches is derived from the life of the vine. Therefore, the fruit of the
Spirit is the fruit of Christ.

4. INFALLIBLE PROOF THAT CHRIST IS THE MESSIAH

The fruit He produces on His branches, or followers, is not produced by any
philosophy or religion on planet Earth. He is the life that flows through all the
branches whether they are in India, Africa, China, Japan, or the United States.

5. GOD THE FATHER IS THE DIVINE GARDENER

A. The Gardener produces the vine.
B. The Gardener supervises the vine. He is responsible for pruning and the
preparing of the plants.
C. God gives His Son. He planted Him here.
John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

6. THE GARDENER’S ONE DESIRE IS TO BEAR FRUIT

As the vine grows it becomes powerful and bears much fruit.

7. BORN-AGAIN BELIEVERS ARE THE BRANCHES

A. A branch is useless unless it is linked to the source of its life.
John 15:4-5, Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of
itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
v. 5, I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him,
the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
B. The branches are all those people who profess Christ as Lord and Savior.

10
The Mystery of Bearing Spiritual Fruit
Lesson 2

C. The branch must always be connected to the vine.

D. The church cannot bear fruit by itself.
E. The Vine can only express itself in the fruit produced by the branches. Christ
can only reveal Himself to this world through Christian conduct.

8. THE PRUNING PROCESS

Vines cannot bear “good fruit,” “more fruit,” or “much fruit” without pruning.
Disciples cannot become like Christ until selfishness, worldliness, and all the lusts of
the flesh are cut away.
John 15:2, Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every
branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

9. PAUL DESCRIBES THE CHRISTIAN’S FRUIT

A. Paul does not use plural “fruits,” but “fruit” –singular. There is one well-
rounded cluster of nine graces that Christians are to bear in their earthly lives.
Galatians 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith,
v. 23, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
B. This fruit cannot be confused with works, gifts, or talents. The fruit of the Spirit
is Christian character. It is the Christian’s resemblance to Christ.
C. To bear fruit is to abide in Christ with his life and personality flowing through
our total person, enabling us to share it with others.

10. HOW TO PRODUCE MORE FRUIT

A. Jesus said in order to produce more fruit the branches must be pruned.
1) Cut back long twigs.
2) Trim the leaves.
3) Cut off small pieces.
B. One must have water to produce fruit. That water is God’s Word.
Ephesians 5:26, That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of
water by the word . . .
C. Fruit must have light; it cannot grow in darkness.
John 1:4, In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.

11
The Mystery of Bearing Spiritual Fruit
Lesson 2

11. WHY SPIRITUAL FRUIT?

Neither the soul nor the body can produce spiritual fruit of itself. This fruit comes
entirely from our born-again nature. It is not possible to have this fruit until a person
is born-again in the Spirit.
Sinners do not know the fruit of the Spirit. Any similarity to the fruit is quickly
dissipated in times of moral and spiritual crises.
God wants all of us, as His children, to bear much fruit. This fruit in our lives is
divine. It flows naturally through our spirits.

THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 3

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE NINE GIFTS OF

THE SPIRIT, THE NINE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT,
AND THE NINE BEATITUDES GIVEN BY JESUS
INTRODUCTION:
A. There are nine gifts of the Spirit, nine fruit of the Holy Spirit, and nine “blessed” in
the beatitudes of Jesus.
B. The gifts of the Holy Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit, and the beatitudes go hand-in-
hand, manifesting the Holy Spirit.
C. You cannot possess the gifts of the Holy Spirit without demonstrating the fruit of the
Holy Spirit and rejoicing in the beatitudes. All Christians should have the fruit of the
Spirit as Paul explained in Galatians 5:22-23.

READING:
A. Gifts of the Spirit
I Corinthians 12:8-10, For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to
another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
v. 9, To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same
Spirit;
v. 10, To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another
discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation
of tongues:
B. Fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith,

13
The Difference Between the Nine Gifts of the Spirit, the Nine Fruit of the Spirit, and the
Nine Beatitudes Given by Jesus
Lesson 3

v. 23, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

C. Beatutudes
Matthew 5:3-12, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
v. 4, Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
v. 5, Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
v. 6, Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall
be filled.
v. 7, Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
v. 8, Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
v. 9, Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
v. 10, Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
v. 11, Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all
manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
v. 12, Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so
persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

1. THREE TIMES THREE EQUAL NINE

The number nine is very interesting in gifts, fruit, and beatitudes. There must be a
reason why God chooses to use this particular number.
When you multiply nine by any other number, you can take the answer and add its
digits together to equal nine. This speaks of a number of completeness.
To illustrate:
A. 3 x 9 = 27 or 2 + 7 = 9
5 x 9= 45 or 4 + 5 = 9
B. 9 x 7 = 63
9 x 9 = 81
9 x 11 = 99, add the two digits together to get 18 and 1 + 8 = 9
C. 9 x 12 = 108
13 x 9 = 117

2. OPERATION OF THE SPIRIT

A. The fruit of the Spirit can operate without the gifts of the Spirit, but the gifts of
the Spirit can never successfully operate without the fruit.

14
The Difference Between the Nine Gifts of the Spirit, the Nine Fruit of the Spirit, and the
Nine Beatitudes Given by Jesus
Lesson 3

B. There is a universal call to God’s people, which is the Body of Christ, to

receive the spiritual gifts in the Church. We must recognize the fact that the
Church is the Body of Christ. We no longer can be ignorant and ignore the gifts
of the Spirit in the Church. Paul said in I Corinthians 12:1, Now concerning
spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

C. Christ is the giver of the spiritual gifts and the Holy Spirit is the operator of the
gifts. Jesus did all of His ministry under the anointing of the same Holy Spirit
which we have.

1) Acts 10:38, How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost
and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were
oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
2) John 16:7, Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I
go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if
I depart, I will send him unto you.
3) John 14:12-15, Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the
works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do;
because I go unto my Father.
v. 13, And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the
Father may be glorified in the Son.
v. 14, If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
v. 15, If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Now is the time for the Church to operate in the greater works Jesus told us to do.

D. In order to do greater works, we must have greater power, greater wisdom,

words of knowledge, discerning of spirits, divers kinds of tongues,
interpretation of tongues, prophecy, gifts of healing, working of miracles, and
the gift of faith.

On the other hand, it is of prime importance that the entire Body of Christ must
understand the fruit of the Spirit in their daily lives.

II Peter 1:5, And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and
to virtue knowledge;

3. PERFECTION TIMES PERFECTION

We see that the nine fruit of the Spirit, the nine gifts of the Spirit, and the nine
beatitudes of the Spirit create perfection. The number three is heaven’s divine
number of completeness.

THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 4

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

VS
THE LUSTS OF THE FLESH
INTRODUCTION:
Divine manifestation and Satanic manifestation both occur in the human person.
Man is created in three dimensions—spirit, soul, and body.
The human spirit is man’s born-again person. Paul said that the spirit fights against the
flesh.
The lusts of the flesh are the result of the fallen man through Adam. They are the fruit of
rebellion against God.
The ungodly person does produce, but he produces from his lower nature--his sinful self--
which resulted from Adam’s fall.
The regenerated spirit and the unregenerate flesh represent two diverse worlds of activity.
They are distinct in substance and productivity.
The life of the spirit seeks to change and transform the life of the soul and flesh by divine
authority from Jesus Christ. The operation can be intricate and deep-reaching.

READING:
Galatians 5:17, For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and
these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

19
Fruit of the Spirit vs. the Lusts of the Flesh
Lesson 4

1. A COMPARISON OF SPIRIT & FLESH

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT THE LUSTS OF THE FLESH

1) Love 1) Adultery
2) Joy 2) Fornication
3) Peace 3) Uncleanness
4) Longsuffering 4) Lasciviousness
5) Gentleness 5) Idolatry
6) Goodness 6) Witchcraft
7) Faith 7) Hatred
8) Meekness 8) Variance
9) Temperance 9) Emulations
Against such there is no law. 10) Wrath
11) Strife
12) Seditions
13) Heresies
14) Envyings
15) Murders
16) Drunkenness
17) Revellings
They who do such things shall not inherit
the kingdom of God.

2. YOU SHALL KNOW THEM BY THEIR FRUIT

A. There are almost twice the number of the lusts of the flesh as there are fruit of
the Spirit.
Jesus said in Matthew 7:17-20, Even so every good tree bringeth forth good
fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
v. 18, A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring
forth good fruit.
v. 19, Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into
the fire.
v. 20, Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
B. It is normal for an apple tree to bear apples, and a banana plant to put forth
bananas. It is simply natural for a person filled with the Spirit of God to yield
the total fruit of the Spirit.
It is especially natural for sinners to manifest the works of the flesh.

20
Fruit of the Spirit vs. the Lusts of the Flesh
Lesson 4

C. By redeeming work of Christ, the Gentiles, through faith, are taken out of the
wild tree and grafted into the holy Tree (Romans 11:17-20). Now it is expected
that they will produce holy fruit.
Romans 6:21-22, What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now
ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
v. 22, But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have
your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

3. UNPRODUCTIVE BRANCHES ARE DESTROYED

When any tree ceases to fulfill its purpose and mission, the keeper will cut it down
and plant another in its place.
Hebrews 6:7-8, For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and
bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from
God:
v. 8, But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing;
whose end is to be burned.

4. THE REDEEMED MUST BEAR FRUIT

One of God’s objectives for the saints is for them to bear fruit and that this fruit
should remain.
John 15:16, Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye
should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye
shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
The branches have one purpose and must draw life from the vine!

5. GOD THE FATHER

A. The responsibility of the husbandman is to keep his plants pruned and
cultivated. This is the work of the Lord and His servants. You will see this
beautifully illustrated in a parable from Luke.

Luke 13:6-9, He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted
in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
v. 7, Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I
come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it
the ground?
v. 8, And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I
shall dig about it, and dung it:
v. 9, And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

21
Fruit of the Spirit vs. the Lusts of the Flesh
Lesson 4

B. The world’s leading horticulturist, Luther Burbank, said, “The pruner must
know his business in cutting, lest the success of his purpose is defeated.”

1) One of the fundamental principles of pruning is that we only cut off a

branch that is joined to a branch.
2) Another is that a branch that gets too long will either break under the
burden of its fruit, or the fruit will be poor and scrawny. Therefore, that
branch must be pruned back to save it, and to help it produce better fruit.

C. Every Christian must pay close attention to God’s pruning principles. In out
ignorance of what God is doing, we may blame another person or the devil.
When tests come, instead of complaining, reread John 15:2, Every branch in me
that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he
purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

The word “purgeth” means to cleanse, prune, expiate (to finish, end, atone for
sin).

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 5

THE FRUIT OF LOVE

INTRODUCTION:
A. Love is the first of the fruit of the Spirit and the key to all the other fruit.
B. This fruit is first directed toward God. It is not a personal achievement, but a work of
the Spirit.
C. Love is the energy of life. It warms every vein and beats in every pulse.
D. It is the secret of a fruitful Christian life—of victorious Christian living. Love is the
fulfilling of the law, of the prophets, and of grace. It is not to be personally
consumed, but given to others.
Romans 13:10, Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling
of the law.

READING:
Galatians 5:13-15, For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for
an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
v. 14, For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour
as thyself.
v. 15, But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of
another.

1. CHRIST SPOKE OF LOVE

A. Jesus commanded us to love God in four ways.

23
The Fruit of Love
Lesson 5

Luke 10:27, And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all
thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind;
and thy neighbour as thyself.
1) With all your heart: emotions
2) With all your soul: will
3) With all your mind: mental faculties
4) With all your strength: body
B. What a dynamic challenge! This is the Spirit directing the natural parts of man
into the supernatural, for God is love.
I John 4:8, He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

2. THE GREAT APOSTLE, BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, GIVES THE

NATURE OF LOVE
I Corinthians 13:4-7, Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity
vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
v. 5, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked,
thinketh no evil;
v. 6, Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
v. 7, Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
A. “Love suffereth long.” It is patient.
B. “Love is kind.” It has a tender touch.
C. “Love envieth not.” It is never jealous.
D. “Love vaunteth not itself.” It does not show-off.
E. “Love is not puffed up.” It does not view itself as important.
F. “Love does not behave itself unseemly.” It is never unbecoming.
G. “Love seeketh not her own.” It is never selfish.
H. “Love is not easily provoked.” It is never irritable.
I. “Love thinketh no evil.” It never holds a grudge.
J. “Love rejoiceth not in iniquity.” It is never self-righteous.
K. “Love rejoiceth in the truth.” It is always honest and dependable.

24

3. THE ULTIMATE COMMANDMENTS

A. Complete love is required.
Mark 12:30-31, And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and
with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first
commandment.
v. 31, And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
B. Christ demands reciprocal love.
John 15:12, This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have
loved you.
C. This is the proof of discipleship.
John 13:35, By this shall al men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love
one to another.

4. THE LOVE COMMANDMENT ILLUSTRATED

A. In the life of Joseph
Genesis 45:4-5, And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray
you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold
into Egypt.
v. 5, Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me
hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.
Genesis 45:8, So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath
made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout
all the land of Egypt.
B. In the Good Samaritans’ actions
Luke 10:33-37, But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was:
and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
v. 34, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and
set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
v. 35, And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave
them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou
spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
v. 36, Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell
among the thieves?
v. 37, And he said, He that showed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him,
Go, and do thou likewise.

25
The Fruit of Love
Lesson 5

C. In Jesus
Luke 23:33-34, And when they were come to the place, which is called
Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand,
and the other on the left.
v. 34, Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

5. LOVE TO INCREASE DAILY

A. Like our growth from childhood to adulthood, we must mature in love.
B. Like the difference between a reflection in an old looking glass and a face-to-
face encounter, love leads us forward and upward.
C. A child “loves” ice cream and grasps at a cone; a grown-up loves the child and
gives him his own cone also.
D. A man loves his son and wants to keep him. God loves mankind and gave His
Son to redeem them.

6. THIS LOVE IS POWERFUL

A. Love is the supreme manifestation of the Spirit.
1) When believers have perfect love, they are champions and triumphant
Christians.
2) Perfect love cats out fear.
I John 4:18, There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear:
because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
B. This divine love is the juice flowing through all the other fruit. Nine is the total
number, but all taste of love.
1) Joy is love with happiness.
2) Peace is love in total relaxation.
3) Longsuffering is love under fiery trial.
4) Gentleness is love refined when all the coarseness of self is purged.
5) Goodness is love shown toward others by righteous conduct.
6) Faith is love trusting.
7) Meekness is love with humility.
8) Temperance is love with self-control.
C. The fruit are listed as one because one is a part of the other, and each is a part of
the whole.

26
The Fruit of Love
Lesson 5

1) Love can be compared to the sections of an orange. Each section is

separate, and yet they make one orange.
2) The same Holy Spirit who produces love also produces each of the inter-
related fruit of the Spirit.

7. CHRIST DEMANDS LOVE

A. The very first inner manifestation of the in-filling of the Spirit of God is love.
Romans 5:5, And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed
abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
B. The lack of love caused Jesus to rebuke the Church at Ephesus.
Revelation 2:4, Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast
left thy first love.
C. We need to know personally and experientially in our hearts the love of Christ
which passes understanding.
Ephesians 3:18-19, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the
breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
v. 19, And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might
be filled with all the fulness of God.

THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 6

THE FRUIT OF JOY

INTRODUCTION:
If one should ask what one thing characterized the Christians of the New Testament, the
answer would be, “their joy.”

The fact is that joy is like the peace of God—the world can neither give it nor take it away;
and it lives in the hearts of all believers as one of the most precious aspects of the fruit of
the Spirit. It is a joy that passes understanding.

Galatians 5:22, But the fruit of the Spirit is . . . joy.

READING:
Psalm 43:4, Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon
the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.

1. JOY IS THE SECOND EXPRESSION OF THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

A. It is remarkable that joy follows love.

If you have no joy, you are a juiceless and useless Christian. The joy of the
Lord is our strength. A joyless Christian is a powerless one. Show me a person
who never smiles, or never praises the Lord, and I will show you a miserable
imitation of a real child of God.

1) If we look like we have been weaned on a dill pickle barrel, or by sucking

on a lemon, we are grown sour and are disconnected from the Spirit and
His fruit.

29
The Fruit of Joy
Lesson 6

2) This fruit of the Spirit loosens us up, and fills us up, and allows others to
enjoy the overflow.
a) With joy we shall draw water from the wells of salvation.
Isaiah 12:3, Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells
of salvation.
b) Jesus said, “My joy I give unto you that your joy may be full,”
John 15:11, These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might
remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
John 16:22, 24, And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see
you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh
from you.
v. 24, Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall
receive, that your joy may be full.
c) Some people have either failed to come and get their portion of joy,
or else the supply is running low.
d) God wants to bring us to a place of fullness.
B. Joy comes with salvation.
1) There is joy on earth. It brings understanding of God, salvation, and
baptism.
Acts 8:39, And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the
Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went
on his way rejoicing.
2) In heaven there is also great rejoicing. When you were saved you brought
joy into your life, home, community, and heaven.
Luke 15:7, 10, I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over
one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons,
which need no repentance.
v. 10, Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels
of God over one sinner that repenteth.
3) Joy is far from worldly excitement.
a) This baptism of joy is called “joy unspeakable and full of glory.”

30
The Fruit of Joy
Lesson 6

I Peter 1:8, Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now
ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and
full of glory:
b) Joy comes to us when we are prayed up and filled up with the Spirit,
just like an artesian well. If I asked an artesian well, “What makes
you so happy and bubbling?” it would have to answer, “It’s not me.
There is something within me that keeps pushing it up.”
I know of nothing better than this overflow to bring a real revival to
the whole body of Christ.
c) This anointing is the Spirit of God, and He gives this wonderful
overflow.
Psalm 23:5, . . . Thou anoinest my head with oil; my cup runneth
over.

2. THE MEANING OF JOY

A. Joy is a condition: the state of the soul due to being right with God. Joy is not
happiness. It produces happiness.
1) Joy is affected by what one is.
2) Joy comes from experiencing God.
3) Joy from God leaps from within the heart and soul.

3. JOY IS BORN IN THE HEART OF THE DISCIPLE

A. Those who belong to Christ have joy. The unbeliever does not have this divine
joy.
Romans 14:17, For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but
righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
B. The hearts of God’s people should be filled with joy.
John 15:11, These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in
you, and that your joy might be full.
C. In the Old Testament the prophets spoke of the joy of the Word of God.
Jeremiah 15:16, Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was
unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O
LORD God of hosts.

31
The Fruit of Joy
Lesson 6

D. The psalmist David realized that in the presence of the Lord there is joy.
Psalm 16:11, Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of
joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
E. The New Testament experience was what made Christians different from the
heathen races around them.
Acts 13:52, And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

4. THE DISCIPLES OF CHRIST ARE CALLED TO BE JOYFUL

A. By the nature of our experience
II Corinthians 2:3, And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should
have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you
all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
B. By the power of God
Acts 13:52, And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

5. THE MANIFESTATION OF JOY

A. By surrendering to the will of God
B. By recognizing our completeness in Christ
I John 1:4, And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
C. By giving praise to God
Psalm 104:35, . . . Bless thou the LORD, O my soul. Praise ye the LORD.

6. IF PERSONS AND CHURCHES FAIL TO BE JOYFUL

A. The heavens will give answer.
Isaiah 49:13, Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into
singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have
mercy upon his afflicted.
B. The earth will be the poorer for our witness.

7. JOY IS INTRINSIC IN CHRISTIAN EXPERIENCE.

A. To be joyful is a glorious privilege.

32
The Fruit of Joy
Lesson 6

B. To be joyful is an attractive experience.

C. We have reason to be joyful.

8. WHAT JOY DOES

A. Joy fortifies the mind with truth and the will with grace.
Nehemiah 8:10, Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink
the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this
day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your
strength.
B. Joy satisfies the soul with fellowship and the heart with love.
Psalm 16:9, Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also
shall rest in hope.

9. HOW JOY COMES

A. With the Holy Spirit there is an incoming and an indwelling upon conversion.
Romans 14:17, For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but
righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
B. When a person is filled with the Holy Ghost, God’s Holy Spirit enters a yielded
life, emptied of self and the world, and produces the “joy of the Lord” and the
“joy of salvation.” You can lose your joy if you do not live in right relationship
with God.
Psalm 51:12, Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy
free spirit.
C. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit coming from Christ.

THE FRUIT OF PEACE

INTRODUCTION:
Peace is the third exciting fruit of the Spirit-filled and Spirit-led life. It is an imparting of
divine rest and happiness.
Peace is one of the greatest achievements being sought by our world. The lack of peace is
costing the nations of the world billions of dollars with universal hunger stalking the earth.
Christ’s great commission is being held back because of man’s inhumanity to man.

READING:
Galatians 5:22, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith . . .

John 14:27, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth,
give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

1. WHO POSSESSES THE FRUIT OF PEACE?

Only those who know Christ as Savior and are justified through their faith in Him
can have divine peace which takes away worry, sorrow, confusion, and fear.
A. How thankful we as Christians may be, that even in the midst of trials and
troubles, we can peacefully trust in the Lord.

Romans 5:1, Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ:

35
The Fruit of Peace
Lesson 7

B. The kingdom of God is peace.

Romans 14:17, For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but
righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
C. Peace that passes understanding shall maintain control of the Christians’ hearts
and minds.
Philippians 4:7, And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall
keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

2. HOW TO HAVE REAL PEACE

A. Put your trust in God.
B. Depend upon the Holy Spirit.
C. Delight yourself in the fellowship of God’s Spirit.
Psalm 119:165, Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall
offend them.

3. THE PEACE OF GOD IS LIKE A RIVER

The great prophet Isaiah understood the peace of God.
Isaiah 48:18, O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace
been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:

4. THE PEACE OF GOD IS A QUALITY OF LIFE

Peace is relaxation and rest.
Isaiah 57:2, He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking
in his uprightness.

5. WAYS NOT TO HAVE TRUE PEACE

A. Do not be at peace among yourselves.

I Thessalonians 5:12-13, And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which

labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
v. 13, And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at
peace among yourselves.
B. Have no regard for those over us in the Lord. It is easy to be a rebel or to be
motivated by pride.

36
The Fruit of Peace
Lesson 7

C. Lack of honor for our parents and teachers. There is no true peace to those who
refuse to honor those whom God has placed over us.
D. Act disrespectfully to God, His house, and His Word. There cannot be true
peace when God is not respected.
E. Be easily offended, irritated, and angry. No person has peace when angry,
irritated, or offended. Peace is tranquility.
F. Seek recognition from men.

6. PEACE IS THE CONSEQUENCE OF LOVE

A. Peace is the result of communication with God.
B. The deep manifestation of the Holy Spirit in our everyday life brings and keeps
peace.
C. When we are in trouble, the presence of God is with us. There can be peace in
spite of trouble.

7. JESUS IS THE PRINCE OF PEACE

A. He came to bring peace on the Earth.
John 14:27, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world
giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
B. Peace in Christ passes all understanding.
Philippians 4:7, And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall
keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
C. Strive that you may be found by Him in peace.
II Peter 3:14, Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be
diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

CONCLUSION:
A. Peace is a benediction to all people.
B. Peace is a blessing wherever exercised.
C. Peace is Christ, the Prince of Peace, in me.
D. Peace is a consequence of love, the result of communion with God, the
manifestation of a better life in the Holy Spirit.

37
The Fruit of Peace
Lesson 7

E. True peace comes not from the absence of trouble, but from the presence of
God. It is a deep peace which passes all understanding in the exact measure in
which we live and partake of the love of God.
The two words, “joy” and “peace,” furnish the color of the Christian life.
1) Peace is a gift from God.
2) You can have this flowing peace.

THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 8

THE FRUIT OF LONGSUFFERING

INTRODUCTION:
Words used to describe longsuffering in the Bible are “forbearance” and “graciousness.”
Longsuffering is like a car which has three gears. To run well one must have forbearance,
which, in effect, is the system by which all these things work. I would call longsufferance
the stabilizer of Christian experience. Just as the Trinity is three in one, these fruit function
as one.
Longsuffering is a fruit directed toward our fellow humans. No none needs longsuffering
toward God. Man is also lenient and patient with himself.
Longsuffering is interlinked with love as are all fruit of the Spirit. As branches, we possess
a marvelous privilege in being close to the vine and having Christ’s own life flowing
through us.
Perhaps longsuffering is part of the fruit of the Spirit which requires divine discipline.
Longsuffering is love on trial, love refined and pure, and selfishness conquered. It is
imperative to develop a Christ-like image to the world according to the Apostle Paul.

READING:
I Peter 5:10, But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ
Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
Longsuffering, like a rose, gives the world sweet essence and divine fragrance.

39
The Fruit of Longsuffering
Lesson 8

1. HOW DO WE LEARN LONGSUFFERING?

A. By observing God’s character
Romans 2:4, Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and
longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to
repentance?
B. By having the Spirit of Christ
Colossians 3:13, Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any
man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

2. CHRIST IS OUR EXAMPLE OF LONGSUFFERING

Jesus never asks us to be anything He is not Himself. The branch with its fruit is the
essence of the Vine.

3. CHRIST IS LONGSUFFERING TO THE SINNER

He is not willing that any should perish.
II Peter 3:9, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count
slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that
all should come to repentance.

4. GOD HAS A RECORD OF BEING LONGSUFFERING WITH

NATIONS
God was longsuffering with Israel. In every generation, Christ waits long and
patiently for the unbeliever to be reconciled. God’s longsuffering did not end with the
children of Israel or the apostles.

5. ARE PRESENT DAY BELIEVERS SHORT ON LONGSUFFERING?

A. Are we patient when things do not go fast enough?
B. Do we refuse to endure wrong or ill treatment?
C. Are we unforgiving, or do we carry a grudge?

6. LONGSUFFERING IS A WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit puts His love, that suffers long, in us.
I Corinthians 13:4, Charity suffereth long . . .

40
The Fruit of Longsuffering
Lesson 8

Christ gives us grace for those who irritate us. He gives strength for forgiveness
when we are provoked beyond human endurance.

7. EXAMPLES OF LONGSUFFERING
A. Job was longsuffering in physical afflictions.
Job 19:26-28, And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my
flesh shall I see God:
v. 27, Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not
another; though my reins be consumed within me.
v. 28, But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is
found in me?
B. Isaac was longsuffering in digging the wells.
Genesis 26:19-22, And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a
well of springing water.
v. 20, And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The
water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with
him.
v. 21, And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the
name of it Sitnah.
v. 22, And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they
strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the
LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
C. Moses was longsuffering in leading the children of Israel.
Exodus 17:3-4, And the people thirsted there for water; and the people
murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us
up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
v. 4, And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this
people? they be almost ready to stone me.
D. Christians must be longsuffering in today’s contacts with fellow Christians.
Ephesians 4:2, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing
one another in love;

8. WHAT IS MEANT BY LONGSUFFERING?

A. Paul describes a minister’s longsuffering.
II Corinthians 6:3-6, Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not
blamed:

41
The Fruit of Longsuffering
Lesson 8

v. 4, But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much

patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
v. 5, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in
fastings;
v. 6, By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy
Ghost, by love unfeigned . . .
B. Divine strength is assured.
Colossians 1:11, Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power,
unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness . . .
C. Paul indicates the power of perfect example.
II Timothy 3:10, But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life,
purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience . . .
Christians should live exemplary lives so that the ministry will not be blamed
for their personal shortcomings.

9. HOW DO I UNDERSTAND GRACIOUSNESS?

A. By listening to the words of Jesus
Luke 4:22, And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words
which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?
B. By feasting on the Word of God
I Peter 2:1-3, Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies,
and envies, and all evil speakings,
v. 2, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow
thereby:
v. 3, If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
C. By accepting longsuffering as a benediction to life.
Genesis 33:11, Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because
God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged
him, and he took it.

10. THE QUALITIES OF LONGSUFFERING

A. Longsuffering is that quality which enables a person to bear adversity, injury,
and reproach, and makes him patient to wait for the improvement of those who
have done him wrong.

42
The Fruit of Longsuffering
Lesson 8

B. God, time and again, put up with Israel. He always forgave.

David said in Psalm 86:15, But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion,
and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.
C. God demonstrated longsuffering with Nineveh.
Jonah 3:10, And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and
God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he
did it not.
Jonah 4:2, 10, And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD,
was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before
unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to
anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
v. 10, Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which
thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and
perished in a night . . .
D. Jesus defined longsuffering.
Matthew 18:21-22, Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my
brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
v. 22, Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until
seventy times seven.

E. Longsuffering is patience in action.

F. Longsuffering is graciousness realized.

G. You can see the miracle of God.

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 9

THE FRUIT OF GENTLENESS

INTRODUCTION:
Gentleness is essential in the life of the Christian. In fact, the word itself best describes
how we are to act. It means “to be tamed” or “be generous.”
Be kind and considerate of each other and care for the wounded. Let other people see that
our hearts are tender and our actions gentle. It takes more character to be gentle than to be
unkind, thoughtless, and crude.
Gentleness—how exquisite the addition!
Christians are not merely to bear the impatience and the intolerableness of the world; we
are to be delicate in our approach to it.
The literal significance is just this: we are to “graze” people—to touch them slightly.
However, the touch has to be one of healing.
Paul’s understanding of gentleness is found in I Thessalonians 2:7, But we were gentle
among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children.
Mark the gentleness of his reproofs. He touched upon them tenderly. Tenderness is a rare
fruit and comes in the life that is united by love and joy to God.

READING:
Titus 3:1-2, Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey
magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
v. 2, To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all
men.

The Fruit of Gentleness
Lesson 9

1. THE FRUIT OF GENTLENESS

A. Gentleness overlooks the faults of others.
B. It is not sharp and bitter.
C. It is soft-spoken and courteous.
D. It encourages the weak and afflicted.
E. It is glad to give to others.
F. It helps others.
The world does not understand gentleness. You cannot be gentle and weak at the
same time.

2. GENTLENESS IS AN INWARD QUALITY

A. It is the motherhood of God.
Isaiah 66:13, As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye
shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
B. It is love in action.
II Samuel 22:36, Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy
gentleness hath made me great.
C. It is the unity of the Spirit.
James 3:17, But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable,
gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without
partiality, and without hypocrisy.
D. A contrary spirit is not from God.

3. GENTLENESS IS A MARK OF GREATNESS

A. Moses had this mark.
Numbers 12:3, (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which
were upon the face of the earth.)
B. Christ had this greatness.
II Corinthians 10:1, Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and
gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am
bold toward you:

46
The Fruit of Gentleness
Lesson 9

C. Among the people of God it creates great Christians.

II Timothy 2:24, And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto
all men, apt to teach, patient . . .
Psalm 18:35, Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right
hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.
D. Gentleness is wisdom from above.

4. GENTLENESS HAS THE COMMENDATION OF CHRIST

A. In the Sermon on the Mount, gentleness is meekness.
Matthew 5:5, Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
B. He sent His disciples forth as sheep among wolves.
Matthew 10:16, Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye
therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
1) We have the Lion of the Tribe of Judah taking care of us.
2) We are secure in Jesus.
3) We should not fear the devil; Jesus ruined him at Calvary.
C. He wants us to be fruitful in every good work.
Colossians 1:10, That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing,
being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God . . .

5. CHRIST IS OUR EXAMPLE

A. The gospels portray Jesus as a gentle person.
B. Peter wept when he remembered the forgiving, gentle Christ.
C. In His daily contact with the people, Jesus was merciful.
1) Forgiving: He forgave the woman caught in adultery.
2) Tender: He blessed the little children.
3) Submissive: “Not my will but thine.”

6. GENTLENESS CAN COME THROUGH TRIALS

A. Those who justify and condone sin in their lives will find that their arguments
lose much of their strength after they have suffered a while. We must come
through trials unblemished and with gentleness in our hearts. This is the
strength of Peter’s revelation from the Lord.

47
The Fruit of Gentleness
Lesson 9

I Peter 4:1, Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm
yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh
hath ceased from sin . . .
B. These pains, sufferings, and trials are like the sun melting butter, softening wax,
and melting an iceberg. The Holy Spirit will work in our hearts a softness when
all the hard, bitter, severe, and critical explosions of our disposition are crushed
to powder.
Your trials will either make you harder or softer—either like the sun on clay or
as sunshine on asphalt pavement.
C. Love suffers long and is kind toward those who are making life miserable to us.
Being gentle like Jesus is one attribute of the Spirit which is much needed in
our lives during this closing out of the Age of Grace.

CONCLUSION:
Because gentleness is an inward quality that comes from God, it is a state of becoming
God’s gentleman or gentlewoman.
It is obedience to Christ in all things.
We need to become gentle in our spirits and pray that God will have mercy on the church,
that the church will be gentle.

THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 10

THE FRUIT OF GOODNESS

INTRODUCTION:
A. In goodness we find benediction, benevolence, beneficence, and benefits. It is a
thoroughly ripe fruit, and its juices allay the pains and fears of men and help to keep
the soul pure and sweet.
B. This virtue of goodness is so sacred and final that one naturally attributes it to God.
Many are aware of the phrase, “We have a good God.” This is true.
C. Goodness is love in the noblest behavior in society. It is holiness put into practice,
and not on dress parade. We cannot help being virtuous and doing right when the
good Spirit is manifesting Himself through us.
Ephesians 5:9, (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and
truth;)
D. What is inside is bound to come out. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth
speaks.
Matthew 12:34-35, O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good
things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
v. 35, A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things:
and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
E. Paul admonishes Christians to be full of goodness.
Romans 11:22, Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which
fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise
thou also shalt be cut off.
The admonition took hold and benefited the believers at Rome.
49
The Fruit of Goodness
Lesson 10

Romans 15:14, And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are
full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.

READING:
Luke 10:33-35, But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when
he saw him, he had compassion on him,
v. 34, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on
his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
v. 35, And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the
host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I
come again, I will repay thee.

1. WHY IS GOD PLACED AS THE SOURCE OF ALL GOOD?

A. Every good and perfect gift cometh from God.
James 1:17, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh
down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow
of turning.
B. God alone can pronounce the verdict concerning creation.
Genesis 1:31, And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was
very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
C. He is the final good for all men.
Psalm 23:6, Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

2. WHY DID JESUS PLACE SO MUCH EMPHASIS ON GOODNESS?

A. It was His highest aim.
Luke 6:27, But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them
which hate you . . .
B. It was the mark of His ministry.
Acts 10:38, How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with
power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the
devil; for God was with him.
C. It was His definite opinion.
Luke 18:19, And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good,
save one, that is, God.
50
The Fruit of Goodness
Lesson 10

3. HOW CAN A CHRISTIAN GAIN THIS GOODNESS?

A. From a rich Christian experience
Luke 6:45, A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that
which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth
forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
B. By practicing what we preach
Acts 9:36, Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by
interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and
almsdeeds which she did.
C. By doing something for others
Galatians 6:10, As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men,
especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

4. GOODNESS IS NOT SALVATION

A. Good thoughts or good deeds will not save the soul.
Romans 3:12, They are all gone out of the way, they are together become
unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
B. Goodness is a way of living and being.
James 4:17, Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him
it is sin.
C. It is a quality ruled by what is right and true.

5. BARNABAS WAS A GOOD MAN

A. He was sent by the Church in Jerusalem.
Acts 11:22, Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church
which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far
as Antioch.
B. He exhorted the saints to cleave unto the Lord.
Acts 11:23, Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and
exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.

51
The Fruit of Goodness
Lesson 10

C. He was full of the Holy Spirit and faith.

Acts 11:24, For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith . . .
D. The result was that people were added to the church.
Acts 11:24, . . . and much people was added unto the Lord.

6. JOSEPH WAS A GOOD MAN

A. He had a forgiving spirit toward those who sold him.
Genesis 45:5, 7-8, Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves,
that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.
v. 7, And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and
to save your lives by a great deliverance.
v. 8, So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me
a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the
land of Egypt.
B. He was liberal in giving them grain.
Genesis 45:21-22, And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them
wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision
for the way.
v. 22, To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he
gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment.
C. He was concerned about his father.
Genesis 45:23, 27, And to his father he sent after this manner; ten asses laden
with the good things of Egypt, and ten she asses laden with corn and bread and
meat for his father by the way.
v. 27, And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them:
and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of
Jacob their father revived:

7. PAUL
Romans 15:14, And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are
full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
A. He expressed his deep desire to be full of goodness.

52
The Fruit of Goodness
Lesson 10

B. He encouraged the brethren by saying:

1) You are full of goodness.
2) You are filled with all knowledge.
3) You are able to admonish one another.

8. THE GOOD SAMARITAN

A. He showed his love to one who had been overlooked.
Luke 10:33, But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was:
and when he saw him, he had compassion on him . . .
B. He had compassion on the less fortunate.
Luke 10:34, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and
wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of
him.
C. He generously committed his time to one who was stripped and beaten.
Luke 10:35, And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and
gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever
thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
D. He was willing to share his possessions. He paid for his care at the inn (Luke
10:35).

9. TRAITS OF A GOOD MAN

A. The good man thinks and prays as he reads the Bible.
B. He searches for the Lord’s guidance, His wisdom, His comfort, and His help to
meet his daily needs.
C. Throughout each day, he looks to the Lord for guidance.

THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 11

THE FRUIT OF FAITH

INTRODUCTION:
A. Our English word “faith” is from a Greek word that means “faithfulness” and
“loyalty.” This faith is not exercised by the human mind.
B. Faith is the foundation of our salvation.
C. Faith is one of the nine supernatural gifts.
D. Faith is also a fruit of the Spirit.
E. Because God is a God of faith, He has a right to expect faith in our spiritual lives.

READING:
Galatians 5:6, For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor
uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

1. HOW FAITH IS PRODUCED

A. By hearing God’s Word
Romans 10:17, So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of
God.
B. By written testimony—People who read the Bible all the time do not backslide.
John 20:30-31, And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his
disciples, which are not written in this book:
v. 31, But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

55
The Fruit of Faith
Lesson 11

C. Through the apostles’ ministry.

Acts 3:14-16, But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer
to be granted unto you;
v. 15, And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead;
whereof we are witnesses.
v. 16, And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong,
whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this
perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

2. THE POWER OF FAITH

A. It is an essential element in salvation if you believe.
John 3:15, That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal
life.
B. It can justify men just as if we had never sinned.
Romans 5:1, Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ . . .
C. It gives access to God. We shall be like Him.
Romans 5:2, By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we
stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
D. It supports our spiritual life.
Romans 1:17, For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to
faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
E. It is the answer to prayer. You can ask, receive, accept, and know an intimacy
with God in prayer, in devotion, and in life.
Matthew 21:22, And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye
shall receive.
F. Faith in your heart pleases God.
Hebrews 11:6, But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that
cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that
diligently seek him.
G. It overcomes trials.
James 1:2-3, My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
v. 3, Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

56
The Fruit of Faith
Lesson 11

3. MEN OF FAITH IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

A. Through faith Abraham believed that God would make him the father of many
nations even though at the time God made the promise, Abraham was not
anyone’s father.
1) Romans 4:16-17, Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the
end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of
the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the
father of us all,
v. 17, (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before
him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth
those things which be not as though they were.
2) He did not waver in unbelief.
Romans 4:18-20, Who against hope believed in hope, that he might
become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken,
So shall thy seed be.
v. 19, And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now
dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness
of Sarah's womb:
v. 20, He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was
strong in faith, giving glory to God . . .
3) His faithfulness was counted as righteousness.
Romans 4:21-22, And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised,
he was able also to perform.
v. 22, And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
B. At 85 years of age, Caleb believed God’s promise and knew he was strong
enough to go into battle and drive the enemy from the land.
Joshua 14:6, 12, Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing
that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in
Kadeshbarnea.
v. 12, Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that
day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the
cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be
able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
C. Hebrews 11:21-22, By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons
of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.

57
The Fruit of Faith
Lesson 11

v. 22, By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the
children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

4. EXAMPLES OF FAITH IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

A. Ten lepers
1) Ten leperous men had heard of the miraculous works of Jesus.
Luke 17:11-12, And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he
passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.
v. 12, And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that
were lepers, which stood afar off . . .
2) Believing He could help them, the men cried out to Him.
Luke 17:13, And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have
mercy on us.
3) Ten diseased men were cleansed as they obeyed Christ’s directions.
Luke 17:14, And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go show
yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they
were cleansed.
4) Only one man acknowledged the glorious God who had healed him.
Luke 17:15-16, And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned
back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
v. 16, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was
a Samaritan.
5) Jesus rebuked the nine who did not glorify God for their healing.
Luke 17:17-18, And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed?
but where are the nine?
v. 18, There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this
stranger.
B. A certain nobleman
1) A nobleman desperately sought Jesus to go with him and heal his son.
John 4:46-47, So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made
the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at
Capernaum.
v. 47, When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he
went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his
son: for he was at the point of death.
58
The Fruit of Faith
Lesson 11

2) Jesus tested the man’s faith.

John 4:48-49, Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and
wonders, ye will not believe.
v. 49, The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
3) The man believed the words Jesus spoke and started home.
John 4:50, Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man
believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
4) On the way home the man heard the result of faith. His son was alive.
John 4:51, And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told
him, saying, Thy son liveth.
5) At the moment Jesus spoke the words of life, the boy began to get better.
John 4:52-53, Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to
amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever
left him.
v. 53, So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus
said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
C. The centurion believed that if Jesus would just give the command, his servant
would recover.
Matthew 8:5, 10, And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came
unto him a centurion, beseeching him,
v. 10, When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed,
Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

5. AS A BODY OF TRUTH
A. Believers must contend for the faith.
Jude 1:3, Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common
salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should
earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
B. They must continue in it.
Acts 14:22, Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to
continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the
kingdom of God.

59
The Fruit of Faith
Lesson 11

C. Paul preached the faith he once denied.

Galatians 1:23, But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times
past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.
D. Paul kept the faith.
II Timothy 4:7, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have
kept the faith:

6. FAITH AS A KEY
A. Faith is the key to all the fruit of the Spirit. Without it there is no answer for our
Christian experience.
Love operates by faith.
Joy and peace do not exist without faith.
Longsuffering, gentleness, and goodness are based on our having faith.
B. The opposite factor is unbelief. We know that unbelief kept Israel out of the
Promised Land. The doubt and unbelief of the people hindered Jesus also. He
could not do any miracles in His own country because of their unbelief.
Mark 6:5, And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands
upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

7. A CHRISTIAN MUST HAVE FAITH

A. Without faith it is impossible to please God.
Hebrews 11:6, But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that
cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that
diligently seek him.
B. The Christian lives by his faith.
Habakkuk 2:4, Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the
just shall live by his faith.
C. The believer is made just by his faith.
Romans 5:1, Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ:

60
The Fruit of Faith
Lesson 11

8. THE DISCIPLE MUST MAINTAIN HIS FAITH

A. Saints must be strong.
I Corinthians 16:13, Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be
strong.
B. They must be unmovable.
I Corinthians 15:58, Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast,
unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know
that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

9. A CHRISTIAN MUST HAVE FAITH IN WORLD VISION

A. “Go ye” means preach, teach, and baptize.
Matthew 28:19, Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
B. “Go ye” for ye are My witnesses.
Acts 1:8, But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon
you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea,
and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
C. “Go ye” throughout all the world.
Mark 16:15, And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the
gospel to every creature.

CONCLUSION:
Faith is a must in the Christian’s life. It needs feeding to starve any doubts and grows as
your vision grows. One way to measure faithfulness is our punctuality. Another is in the
way we take responsibility. We should never waver in our faith, love, and zeal towards
Him. As we grow in God, we grow in faith.

THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 12

THE FRUIT OF MEEKNESS

INTRODUCTION:
True meekness is not slave-like submission.
Some say a person is meek when he is not quick to anger.
Many things occur in daily life to provoke a person’s anger, but the Christian overcomes
his anger by meekness.
It is that quality which comes from praying to be more like Jesus and giving your whole
self over into His loving hands.

READING:
James 1:21, Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive
with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
Galatians 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith,
v. 23, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

1. THE DISTINCTIVENESS OF MEEKNESS

A. It is submissiveness of spirit.
B. It does not lift itself up in opposition.
C. It bends like a reed before the storms of life.
D. It is not easily provoked.
E. We must have a meek spirit when witnessing to outsiders.

63
The Fruit of Meekness
Lesson 12

2. EXAMPLES OF MEEKNESS
A. Moses had meekness above all men, yet he was strong, fierce, dynamic,
powerful, and a leader of men.
Numbers 12:3, (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which
were upon the face of the earth.)
B. David illustrates meekness.
1) Shimei stoned and cursed David, but he abstained from revenge.
II Samuel 16:9-10, Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king,
Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray
thee, and take off his head.
v. 10, And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah?
so let him curse, because the LORD hath said unto him, Curse David.
Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?
2) David’s hope was in the Lord. He trusted God to return this curse into
good for him.
II Samuel 16:11-12, And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants,
Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how
much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him
curse; for the LORD hath bidden him.
v. 12, It may be that the LORD will look on mine affliction, and that the
LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day.
C. Job rent his mantle, shaved his head, and worshiped the Lord.
Job 1:20-22, Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell
down upon the ground, and worshipped,
v. 21, And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I
return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the
name of the LORD.
v. 22, In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
D. Jeremiah faced death because he obeyed the Lord and prophesied against
Jerusalem. Yet when he stood before his accusers, he meekly replied, “I am in
your hand, do with me as seemeth good.”
Jeremiah 26:12-14, Then spake Jeremiah unto all the princes and to all the
people, saying, The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and against
this city all the words that ye have heard.

64
The Fruit of Meekness

the LORD your God; and the LORD will repent him of the evil that he hath
pronounced against you.
v. 14, As for me, behold, I am in your hand: do with me as seemeth good and
meet unto you.
E. Christ exhibited meekness.
1) He made Himself of no reputation.
Philippians 2:5-8, Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ
Jesus:
v. 6, Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal
with God:
v. 7, But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a
servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
v. 8, And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and
became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
2) He was meek and lowly of heart.
Matthew 12:28-29, But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the
kingdom of God is come unto you.
v. 29, Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his
goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his
house.
F. Stephen meekly prayed, “Lord lay not this sin to their charge.”
Acts 7:59-60, And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord
Jesus, receive my spirit.
v. 60, And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin
to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

3. PROMISES TO THE MEEK

A. They shall inherit the earth.
1) Matthew 5:5, Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
2) Psalm 37:11, But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight
themselves in the abundance of peace.
B. The meek shall be exalted.
Psalm 147:6, The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the
ground.

earth. Selah.
2) Psalm 149:4, For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will
beautify the meek with salvation.
E. The meek will increase in joy.
Isaiah 29:19, The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor
among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

4. WHEN TEMPTED NOT TO SHOW MEEKNESS

A. Ask God to subdue the pride of your heart.
B. Magnify Christ in praise and testimony.
C. Develop the habit of depending upon the Holy Spirit.
D. Claim the enabling help of Christ.

5. MEEKNESS IN REALITY
A. All the things which come to us in our everyday lives show whether or not we
have meekness in our hearts.
B. God’s Word is the instructor in meekness to all who read it with the desire to be
more and more like Christ.
C. We should not be easily provoked. We should not insist on standing up for our
own rights. We may win an argument but lose a friend.
D. Meekness is love with a bowed head and is a most rare jewel—more than
pearls, diamonds, or sapphires.
E. Meekness is the result of total deliverance from “self” and carnality.
F. Meekness is self-forgiveness. We no longer contend for our own rights and
honors of position.
G. Meekness leaves all this in God’s hands.
H. Meekness never rushes into the presence of God like a wild bull into a china
shop.

66
The Fruit of Meekness
Lesson 12

I. Meekness is free from retaliation when scolded, rebuked, mistreated,

dishonored, or misrepresented in any way.

J. Meekness is love at its best and most refined state.

6. MEEKNESS—A COMMANDMENT FOR BELIEVERS

A. Errors by others must be gently pointed out in a spirit of meekness.
Galatians 6:1, Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are
spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest
thou also be tempted.
B. Paul reminded Timothy to seek after meekness.
I Timothy 6:11, But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after
righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
C. Show meekness to all men.
Titus 3:2, To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all
meekness unto all men.
D. God values a meek spirit.
I Peter 3:4, But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not
corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight
of God of great price.

CONCLUSION:
Meekness is not weakness. It is soft but not soggy. It is actually iron in the spiritual
bloodstream that is covered with heavenly velvet.
Meekness is like Jesus—both a lion and a lamb.

THE SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Lesson 13

THE FRUIT OF TEMPERANCE

INTRODUCTION:
We now begin the final lesson in what has been an exciting series on the supernatural fruit
of the Holy Spirit.
The last fruit of the Spirit is temperance.
It points to the difficulties which the spiritual life is apt to meet within the nature of
passions and desires. The power of self-control is one of the great qualities that
differentiate the Christian from the sinners.

READING:
Galatians 5:16, 26, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the
flesh.
v. 26, Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

1. WHAT IS TEMPERANCE?
A. It is the power of self-control.
1) II Peter 1:6, And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience;
and to patience godliness;
2) I Corinthians 9:25, And every man that striveth for the mastery is
temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but
we an incorruptible.

69
The Fruit of Temperance
Lesson 13

B. Temperance is a requirement for church offices.

1) Titus 2:2, That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith,
in charity, in patience.
2) Titus 1:7-8, For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not
selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy
lucre;
v. 8, But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy,
temperate;
C. Temperance is a necessary quality for the believer in Christ.
II Peter 1:4-7, Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious
promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having
escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
v. 5, And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue
knowledge;
v. 6, And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to
patience godliness;
v. 7, And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

2. THE MEANING OF TEMPERANCE

A. Habitual moderation—not occasional
B. Complete abstinence—not playing games with sex and drugs
C. Control over the whole man: desires, passions, and appetites
Numbers 6:2-3, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When
either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to
separate themselves unto the LORD:
v. 3, He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no
vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of
grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.
D. There is nothing finer than a temperate man who is full of moral courage.

4. THE NEED FOR TEMPERANCE

A. The same principle is needed for life today regarding all forms of desire: mental
and physical.
B. Nature, mind, heart, and body must be kept divinely under control.

70
The Fruit of Temperance
Lesson 13

5. SOURCE OF TEMPERANCE
A. Our faith in Christ
B. Deliverance through the Gospel
C. Kept by God’s grace

6. HOW CAN MAN KEEP HIS NATURES UNDER CONTROL?

If we keep in close communion with God, we will not follow after the flesh.
Galatians 5:16, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the
flesh.
Repeated failure brings discouragement and a sense of powerlessness, because Satan has
chained us in bondage of sin and in Luke 11:21 it says, When a strong man armed keepeth
his palace, his goods are in peace.

7. THE POWER TO ENJOY THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS IN

CHRIST.
Galatians 5:24, And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections
and lusts.
A. Faith in Christ has no part in sins of the flesh.
B. Faith in the Word starts with love and ends in temperance.
C. Faith which operates the gifts and fruit of the Spirit is beyond law or regulation,
or restraint.
Galatians 5:23, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

8. TEMPERANCE IS A DYNAMIC FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

A. Temperance is to a Christian as the rind is to an orange or grapefruit. It is as the
skin or peeling is to an apple, peach, pear, or plum. It keeps the juice from
leaking out.
Temperance keeps us from losing the blessings of love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, or meekness.
B. This fruit of the Spirit is love in self-control. Some Christians yield to the soft
pleading of the flesh, to its craving lusts, appetites, and passions.
C. This fruit of the Spirit will keep all of us within God’s moral standards and up
to God’s spiritual code.

71
The Fruit of Temperance
Lesson 13

D. It is not always the label on the can or the trademarks that make the articles
good or bad. It is not the name of the churches or denominations you profess.
When the world sees the works of the flesh and not of the Spirit, they know the
label is false, phoney, and counterfeit.

9. THE NATURAL FLOW

The fruit of the Spirit comes forth naturally and cannot be forced.

10. FRUIT CANNOT BE COUNTERFEITED

Satan may try to counterfeit the gifts of the Spirit, but he cannot counterfeit the fruit
of the Spirit. The nearest he can come to love is lust. The closest he can come to joy
is worldly pleasure with its aftermath of sorrow.

11. TRUTH SHALL WIN

Victories of the wicked are temporary, but God will establish the truth forever;
temperance prevails.
A. Job 20:5, That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the
hypocrite but for a moment?

B. Proverbs 12:19, The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying
tongue is but for a moment.
