The Wise Man Must Use Natural Medicines

In view of the general disillusionment with modern medicine and pharmaceutical prescriptions
that we are witnessing today in wake of the Covid farce, it is interesting to see the direction
given by Holy Scriptures for doctors. In Ecclesiasticus, we find a different direction given for
the physician to follow.

These words of the Wise Man remind the physician that God created medicines "out of the
earth" and "the wise man will not abhor them." That is, the physician should seek out the
secrets of nature wherein are curing and healing properties placed in them by the Creator for
the benefit of man. The physician open to divine and angelic inspirations will find the cures
that God placed in the natural world and use them for the common good.

Based on Scriptures itself, it seems this way of following nature for answers to man's ailments
and miseries could be the pathway of medicine in the Reign of Mary.

Ecclesiasticus (38:1-12)

Honor the physician with the honor due unto him for the need which ye may
have of him: For the Most High hath created him. For all healing is from God,
and he shall receive gifts of the king.

The skill of the physician shall lift up his head: and in the sight of great men he
shall be in admiration. The most High hath created medicines out of the earth,
and a wise man will not abhor them. Was not bitter water made sweet with wood
that the virtue thereof might be known? And has not the Most High given
knowledge to men that He may be honored in his wonders?

By these he shall cure and shall allay their pains. And of these the apothecary
shall make sweet confections, and shall make up ointments of health, and of his
works there shall be no end. For the peace of God is over the face of the earth.

My son, in thy sickness neglect not thyself, but pray to the Lord, and he shall
make thee whole. Turn away from sin and order thy hands aright, and cleanse
thy heart from all wickedness. Give a sweet savor, and a memorial of fine flour,
and make a fat offering.

And then give place to the physician, for the Lord hath created him: and let him
not depart from thee, for his works are necessary.
