INTRODUCTION

Remembering to take medicines can be a problem when there is some interruption

to usual daily life, such as holidays, running last-minute errands, going out for a
meal, or elderly people living with dementia who frequently forget to take their
medicines.

Sometimes medications may come with instructions that are too complex for
seniors to understand and follow. However, the elderly forgetting a medication
prescribed to them could inflict serious health concerns. Suppose they have any
kind of serious illness, disease, or condition such as diabetes, or a heart condition.
In that case, it is their responsibility to take the appropriate medications in order to
treat the Doctor's advice by taking the right amount at the right times.

Medication dosage errors of any kind will endanger their lives and relying on
memory alone isn’t enough. This causes us to suggest bringing such a Linux-Based
Speaking Medication Reminder that can help them.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Despite seniors being the biggest consumers of healthcare and medicines, over 55
percent of older individuals fail to comply with medication instructions, and even
seniors who are high-functioning are at risk for improper medication adherence.
The reasons for taking the wrong medications are as varied as they are numerous.
For example, Seniors living with dementia may fail to take prescription drugs on
schedule due to impairments in memory. Or seniors sometimes can't remember if
they took their medications 30 minutes after taking them, so they take them again.
(Cruz, 2010)

We all know that older Individuals frequently forget to take their medications at the
appropriate times as specified in their prescriptions, which can result in delayed
recovery from disease or illness or potentially fatal errors due to improper
medication use. To avoid this, the proponents proposed Linux-Based Speaking
Medication Reminders that can assist in preventing these potentially fatal errors by
automatically setting reminders.

In order to accept different reminders with date, time, and dosage, the system first
enables users to input reminders. Patients are then reminded to take the proper
medication at the right time. Users can save dates and times for taking medications
using the Raspberry Pi. The dosage for each reminder can also be entered by the
user. At the predetermined time, the system retrieves the data and turns the text into
speech. Now, the system reads aloud the medication reminder at predetermined
intervals.

OVERVIEW OF THE CURRENT STATE OF THE TECHNOLOGY

Seniors suffering from advanced dementia frequently lose the ability to safely
manage their own medications. As a result, someone must be present to provide
medication reminders and ensure that the elder takes their medications as directed,
or a system that can remind them with their medications is considered necessary.

Nowadays, There are currently designed devices for each patient to use for their
medication. Reminder Rosie is a voice-controlled, personalized reminder system
for the elderly. Alert1 Medication Reminder and Organizer is a pill organizer in the
shape of a circle. reminds the patient to take their medication on time These are the
current devices. only for personal use

The proposed system has a speaking reminder that will remind the person what
medicine to take and the accurate prescriptions. And the user can easily input there
medication information like Date and Time, Dosage , and Medicine name and the
system will automatically convert text to speach.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To design and develop Linux-Based Speaking Medication Reminders

For Elderly People Using Raspberry Pi 3.

The proponents’ primary goal is to develop a project that will help the given
beneficiary to prevent medication errors. It is a System that allows users to
store their medication dates and time using raspberry pi. Also users are
allowed to enter dosage of each reminder.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

To design and display a system that can allow users to store their
medication time, date, and dosage.
The proponents will use an LCD display screen for the user to see what they
have input in the system and a Keyboard so they can modify the information
they have input.

To create a reminder via a speaker.

The proponents will use a speaker to notify in ten minutes before the
scheduled time of medicine intake.

SCOPE

Speaking Medication Reminder System

The system will alarm twice using the Speaker. The first alarm is ten
minutes before the scheduled time, reminding the patient or person
following the first alarm to ensure that the required medication is already
prepared.

LIMITATION

The system does not show the full information of the patients or person.

The database only contains the needed information for taking medicine like
the name of the medicine, dosage, time, and date.

The system does not support portability

If the person is not at home, the system is ineffective because there is no one
to remind

Literature Review

Review of related literature, studies or systems

Reminder devices reportedly improve medication adherence in the elderly with

mild dementia; Therefore, a literature review was performed to identify factors
associated with adherence to medication in the elderly people with cognitive
impairment or dementia and to discuss strategies for improvement of
non-adherence. However, the efficacy of such devices remains unexplored.
Therefore, this device not only improved her medication adherence, hemoglobin
A1c level, and self-confidence but also reduced the burden for there caregivers if
they have one. For elderly patients with such diseases, loading the device with
medication, providing advance notice before mechanical reminders for a short
period after the device's activation, monitoring unused medication, and adjusting
the timing of reminders according to users' daily routine, seemed to facilitate the
daily use of the device. They monitored its use during the first week. Values of the
self-administration medication rate during 1 week for 13 (72.2%) users showed
improvement at 3 months. This result revealed that reminder devices can improve
medication adherence in the elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment.
Further study is needed to assess the magnitude of this improvement and to
enhance its support for users with mild cognitive impairment. (Kamimura T,
Ishiwata R & Inoue T.,2012)

Design and Development of Mobile based Medication Reminder

Zao et al. (2010) created a mobile application called Wedjat, it’s an advanced
mobile phone application that causes patients to keep away from these oversights.
Wedjat can remind its clients to take the right medications on time and keep an
in-take record for later survey by medicinal services experts. Wedjat has two
recognized highlights: (1) it can caution the patients about potential medication
sedate/tranquilize nourishment associations and plan an intake plan that maintains
a strategic distance from this antagonistic cooperation’s; (2) it can amend an
in-take plan naturally when a measurements was missed. In the two cases, their
application dependably creates the most straightforward timetable with minimum
number of in-takes. Wedjat works with the timetable application accessible on
most PDAs to issue medication and supper updates. It additionally demonstrates
photos of the medication and professional vides concise in-take guidelines. As a
tele monitoring gadget, Wedjat can keep up medication in-accept records,
synchronizes them with a database on a host machine or transfer them onto an
electronic medical records (EMR) framework. Moreover, this application reminds
a patient just once, and has its platform dependent.

Santo et al. (2017) conducted a research specifically on the ways to improve the
adherence on medication by coronary heart disease patients. They exploited the
available medication reminders applications for both the Android and iOS versions
in determining the differences in medicine adherence between advanced and basic
medicine reminder application. Surprisingly, the application lacks a cloud based
backup system for its data.

Medication Reminder And Healthcare - An Android Application

This is an Android-based application in which an automatic alarm ringing system

is implemented. It focuses on doctor and patient interaction. Patients need not
remember their medicine dosage timings as they can set an alarm on their dosage
timings. The alarm can be set for multiple medicines and timings including date,
time and medicine description. A notification will be sent to them through email or
message inside the system preferably chosen by the patients. They can search
doctor disease wise. The patients will get the contact details of doctors as per their
availability. Also the users can see different articles related to medical fields and
health care tips. The system focuses on easy navigation and good user interface.
Many such Medical Reminder Systems have been developed where a new
hardware is required but in our work we have made an attempt to develop a system
which is economical, time-saving and supports medication adherence. (Deepti
Ameta & Kalpana Mudaliar & Palak Patel., 2015)

Smart Home Medication Reminder System.

They are showing a working solution on how a smart home can be utilized to help
people with medication-related remainders. The proposed flow starts when a new
medication prescription is taken from the doctor. eHealth system generates QR
code which is then delivered as part of the prescription, holding a set of
information, such as medications treatment, duration, next visit, and similar. This
set of information is used by the expert system which handles all the notifications
generated by prescription. In used system, three types of notifications are used,
smartphone notifications, home voice, and video notifications. (Milan Ramljak.

Reminder Rosie

Behind a simple and familiar clock interface is a robust technology. Reminder

Rosie processes spoken language almost as easily as humans do. By carefully
listening for words or phrases, Rosie is ready 24/7 to execute requests. Reminders
can be programmed in any language to provide greater comfort, familiarity and to
improve task completion. With Rosie, users can record up to 25 reminders for
every day, weekly or any date. Review the day’s reminder with a simple voice
command so you stay in control. Rosie will work even during power outages.
Rosie will maintain its daily reminders and all other critical features.

and remind stroke patients to take medications by developing a prototype system
called DCMed. The research finds that the stroke patients in the experimental
group using DCMed system are more interested and complied with taking
medications accounting for 42.86%. Moreover, the patients can take medications
more timely than those in the control group at the significant level of
0.05.(Rattanayotin & Vanijja. 2018)

Developing the Medication Reminder Mobile Application “Seeb”

solution for decreasing medication errors for Iranians. This application was
designed for the appropriate medication administration including time and
dosages through: recording patient and medication data; scheduling patients’
medication; and reporting medication administration on progress. (Isfahani,
Ehteshami, Savari & Samimi. 2017)

Synthesis

While there are related designs to the proposed system, the Linux-Based Speaking
Medication Reminder For Elderly People Using Raspberry Pi 3 has some
advantages over the related literature mentioned above and some give the
proponents other ideas. We all know that many of the elderly don’t know how to
use smartphones and don’t know how QR code works. One of the advantages of
the proposed system is it doesn’t need smartphones and it's not an Application or
Andriod-Based, By the use of a keyboard and the LCD, users can easily enter their
medication like Time and Date, Dosage, and the name of the medicine. So that’s
why this system can save human beings from the extreme effects of improper
medication mix-ups.
