Lumos – The Charity

In my presentation, I will introduce the Lumos organization and go into individual points and details
such as what kind of organization it is, what it does or causes, how and when it came into being,
where it is located, who or what works there and for what reason it was founded. Lumos is a non-
governmental organization founded in 2005 by J.K. Rowling and Emma Nicholson. And who are these
people? J.K. Rowling, is a British author and philanthropist. She wrote a seven-volume children's
fantasy series, Harry Potter, published from 1997 to 2007. Emma Nicholson is a British politician, who
has been a life peer since 1997 and who is 80 years old. The organization began when Rowling saw a
picture in a newspaper in 2004 of a young boy being placed in an institution far from his family. Out
of compassion, she founded Children's High Level Group (CHLG) with Emma Nicholson and then they
founded Lumos, which works to end the systematic institutionalization of children worldwide.
However, in 2010 Nicholson left the organization. They are an international charity committed to a
future where every child grows up in a safe, loving family home. So today there are an estimated 5.4
million children in institutions around the world. Research shows that these facilities can be
detrimental to their growth and development. And more than 80% of children in orphanages have a
living parent. They shed light on the root causes of family separation – poverty, conflict and
discrimination. They push and support governments to reform care systems and through building
global expertise and capabilities with our partners, we show how children can be safely reunited with
families. Since 2009, Lumos has prevented 20,915 children from entering harmful institutionsThey
helped prove that institutions are not only harmful but also costly to maintain. The resources
pumped into them could be better invested in services that strengthen and support families and
address the root causes of separation. It is a global problem because 80% of children in orphanages
have a living parent and an estimated 5.4 million children live in institutions worldwide. plus 300
global research studies show the long-term harm of institutions to children. The organization also
deals with one of the biggest problems today, the children from the ukraine war. Because the author
of the Harry Potter novels, J.K. Rowling, wants to donate up to one million pounds (around 1.2 million
euros) for relief supplies that are intended to benefit children in Ukraine. The 56-year-old Brit shared
an appeal for donations from the charity she founded, Lumos, promising to match every donation up
to a total of £1 million. The organization also raises the awareness of others to donate to the
suffering children. The Lumos website also explains very well and specifically what the organization
stands for and what it does in the world. In conclusion, this organization is nothing short of
remarkable, determined and ambitious, as this organization has already achieved a lot, has many
more goals in mind and has a huge team of kind-hearted people who care about the well-being of
many children
