My career choice is physical therapy, so it was most fitting for me to choose The Code of
Ethics for the Physical Therapist. The Code of Ethics for Physical Therapists is built upon the
five roles of the physical therapist. This includes management of patients/clients, consultation,
education, research, and administration. There are also core values associated with physical
integrity, professional duty, and social responsibility. Core values are extremely important in this
profession. For example, core values guide the behaviors of physical therapists, and allow
Based on the sheet we were provided; the principles of physical therapy are all fairly
familiar. One ethical guideline includes that physical therapists shall be accountable for making
sound professional judgments. One part of this principle states that physical therapists should
interest in all practice settings. I agree with this principle because it is not acceptable to put
patients through treatments that are not needed, or could potentially be harmful to the patient.
Another principle is physical therapists shall respect the inherent dignity and rights of all
individuals. This principle uses the two core values, compassion and integrity. This principle
states, “Physical therapists shall act in a respectful manner toward each person regardless of age,
gender, race, nationality, religion, ethnicity, social or economic status, sexual orientation, health
condition, or disability. Physical therapists shall recognize their personal biases and shall not
discriminate against others in physical therapist practice, consultation, education, research, and
administration.” I one hundred percent agree with this principle because there is not a place for
discrimination in this profession. Another principle includes that physical therapists shall fulfill
their legal and professional obligations. This principle engages the core values of professional
duty and accountability. This principle emphasizes that physical therapists shall comply with
applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations. As well as report information of any
colleague that is unable to perform their professional responsibilities with reasonable skill and
safety. This principle is extremely important. It keeps not only the patients safe, but the
After reading all of the principles regarding the Code of Ethics I agree with all of them.
The principles emphasize the significance of maintaining a professional, healthy, and safe
environment. For example, numerous of the principles state that discrimination is not welcome.
Such as the principle #1, #2, #4. The purpose of the Code of Ethics is to: “provide standards of
behavior and performance that form the basis of professional accountability to the public.
Provide guidance for physical therapists facing ethical challenges, regardless of their
professional roles and responsibilities. Educate physical therapists, students, other health care
professionals, regulators, and the public regarding the core values, ethical principles, and
standards that guide the professional conduct of the physical therapist. Lastly, establish the
standards by which the American Physical Therapy Association can determine if a physical
therapist has engaged in unethical conduct.” The Code of Ethics is what maintains the workplace
of physical therapists.
