welcome to the university of michigan

micro learning program for the surgical

clerkship

today we will be showing you the proper

technique for handing sterile supplies

such as your gloves to the scrub tech we

will also walk through how to open your

own gloves onto a sterile field

and finally we'll review how to set up a

sterile field

to open your gloves gently break the

tabs at the corners of the packaging

next you'll want to position your hands

so that the length of your thumb and

part of your palm

span the length of the package leaflets

then pull the leaflets down and out

while rotating your wrists

so that the leaflet edges do not fold

back in towards your gloves you can then

hand your gloves to the scrub tech

use this technique when opening similar

packaging make sure there is enough

space between your hands and the scrub

tech when handing off packages

if you are asked to open your own gloves

onto the surgical field

start by positioning the package along

the bottom of one forearm

with the pads of your fingers gripping

the leaflets pull the bottom leaflet

towards your body while extending your

other arm over the sterile field

this allows the gloves to drop directly

onto the field

to open larger sterile packages or

create a sterile field

start by opening the clear packaging you

can then grab the blue package

but remember when you do this the

outside of the blue package is no longer

sterile

hand the label or barcode to the

circulating nurse

place the package on a flat surface make

sure the folds are facing up when you do

this

then grab each tab to unfold the package

being mindful to maintain sterility

when you are finished you will now have

a sterile field

remember your priority is to maintain

the sterile field

listen to the scrub tech and don't be

afraid to ask for help

thanks for watching and good luck on

your clerkships
