PICTURE OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

The image of St. John the Baptist was carved from a solid piece of molave, carved by a Chinese
sculptor about 1.6 m high. When the Moros raided the place, the fingers, thumb of the right hand
and the thumb and toes of the left feet were cut- off by a campelan, a moro bolo.

RELIGIOUS ASPECTS
PRE- SPANISH PERIOD
- Our ancient people were pagans. There supreme God was Bathala. They also worshipped
the nature- the rivers, mountains, old and big trees, fields, etc. in the belief that such
natural objects were the habitat of spirits.
SPANISH PERIOD
- In the advent of the first Spanish Franciscan Missionaries that landed along the shores in
1600, the spread of the Catholic religion started in Caramoran. Caramoran Parish was
founded. People were taught the basic prayers in Latin , those found in the Doctrina
Christiana. The building of a church in the parish is prominent landmark. Rev. Fr.
Ludovico de Vela, found one leaf in the church books that in 1700, the Parish was
already administered by a Parish priest, only that the name was not readable
The earliest parish was in barrio Tubli in the year 1600 but no longer existing. Later in
1801 it was moved to Caramoran Poblacion.
AMERICAN PERIOD- LIBERATION
- Protestantism was the religion propagated by the Americans in the Philippines. But due to
the fact the Caramoranons are God- loving and God- fearing, still most remained to be
Catholics. It is only today that only a few became protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses and
Iglesia ni Kristo.
PRESENT
- The influence of media, other cultures, technology and modernization and even education
is so great. The democratic principles embodied in the Philippine Constitution patterned
from the American Government, made the Filipinos select their religion.
- People from different regions, different groups and beliefs choose their own religion \.
Several religious and prayer charismatic movements aside from the Catholic religion are
found in Caramoran. To name some; we have Seventh day Adventist, Praise the lord,
Iglesia ni Cristo, Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Charismatic Movement El Shaddai whose
founder was a Caramoranon, Engineer Mariano Velarde who hailed from Mabini, later
settled in Caramoran but now in Manila. He was a former contractor developer before
venturing and establishing prayer movement El Shaddai.
