ESSENTIAL ISSUES RELATED TO

SALAT
The Obligation of Salat:
Allah Almighty said

‫ﭽﮣ ﮤ ﮥ ﮦ ﮧ ﮨ ﮩ ﮪ ﭼ‬
“Verily, As-Salat (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers
at fixed hours.” Also, Allah says that the people of
Paradise will ask the people of Hell: (Quran 4:103)

‫ﭽﰖ ﰗ ﰘ ﰙ ﰚ ﰛ ﰜ ﰝ ﰞ ﰟ ﰠ ﭼ‬
“What has led you into the hell fire?” They will say:
“We were not of those who used to offer the Salat
(prayers).” (Quran 74:42-43)

It’s clear from these Quranic verses that salat is an

important religious obligation from which no adult
muslim is exempt.

Abandoning Salat is the disbelief of Islam:

Syedna Jabir () narrated that the Holy Prophet ()
said:
6 PRAYER
Between man and polytheism and unbelief is the
abandonment of salat. (Sahi Bukhari: 82).

This hadith indicates that salat acts as a barrier or a wall

between Islam and disbelief. The one who abandons salat
easily becomes the perpetrator of disbelief.

Syedna Abdullah Bin Abbas ( ) narrated that the Holy

Prophet () sent Syedna Mu`adh () to Yemen and said:
ْ َ َّ ُ ُ َ ِّ َ َ ُ َّ َّ َ َ َ ْ َ َ َ َ َ ْ ُ ُ ْ
‫ ف ِإن‬،‫الل‬ ِ ‫ وأن ي رسول‬،‫«ادعهم إِلى شهاد ِة أن ال إِله إِل الل‬

)1395 :‫َوت َرد ع ف ق َرائ ِ ِه ْم» (صحيح بخاري‬
Invite the people to testify that none has the right
to be worshipped but Allah and verily I am Allah's
Messenger (), and if they obey you to do so, then
teach them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers
in every day and night (in twenty-four hours), and if
they obey you to do so, then teach them that Allah has
made it obligatory for them to pay the Zakat from their
property and it is to be taken from the wealthy among
them and given to the poor. (Sahi Bukhari: 1395).

Sydena Abdullah Bin Amr () said that the Holy

Prophet () brought up the mention of salat one day
and said:
PRAYER 7

He who preserves it (salat), will find it to be a light
for him, an evidence and a deliverance on the day of
resurrection. But he who does not preserve, it will not
have it as a light, an evidence and a deliverance, and, on
the day of resurrection, he will be with Qaroon, Firaun,
Haman and Ubayy ibn Khalaf. (Musnad e Ahmad :6576)

These ahadith indicate that salat has been made obligatory

for Muslims five times a day.

Purity:
Ablution is a condition for salat without which the salat
is not accepted because Allah Almighty has mentioned in the
Quran that:

‫ﭽﭑﭒﭓﭔﭕﭖﭗﭘ‬
‫ﭙ ﭚ ﭛ ﭜ ﭝ ﭞ‬
‫ﭟ ﭠ ﭡﭼ‬
O you who believe! When you are about to pray, wash
your faces, and your hands and arms up to the elbows,
and pass your [wet] hands lightly over your head, and
[wash] your feet up to the ankles. (Al Maidah: 6).

It’s also a condition that the water used for ablution should
8 PRAYER
be pure. According to Sahih ahadith, water from wells and
water bodies like the sea is pure and can be used for ablution
(Sunan Abi Dawood: 66 ،83).

It’s important for the place where salat is offered to also be

pure (Al-baqarah: 125).

It is extremely important for your clothes to be pure for

salat (Al-Muddaththir: 5 ،4).

Avoiding splashes of urine and keeping the clothes

clean from all kinds of impurities is essential. If a boy infant
urinates on your clothes then it can be splashed with water for
purification but if a girl infant urinates on your clothes then
they must be washed (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 223, Sunan Ibn Majah: 525).

If there is dirt on your shoes then they can be rubbed

against the ground, after which salat can be offered in them
(Sunan Abi Dawood: 650).

The Method of Ablution

Recite “Bismillah” before starting the ablution (Sunan al-
Nisa›i: 78).

Wash both hands thrice up to the wrists. Also, rinse

between the fingers (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 159, Sahih Muslim: 226).

Take a handful water in your right hand. Use half of it

to rinse your mouth and the remaining half for rinsing your
nose. Use your left hand to blow the water out (Sahih Al-Bukhari:
199 ,191, Sahih Muslim: 235).

Wash your face three times and rinse your beard (Sahih Al-
Bukhari: 185, Jami ‹Al-Tirmidhi: 31).

Wash the right arm up till the elbow three times (Sahih Al-
PRAYER 9

Bukhari: 1934, Sahih Muslim: 236).

Wash the left arm up till the elbow three times (Sahih Al-
Bukhari: 1934, Sahih Muslim: 236).

Wipe your head (masah). Start from the front of the head
(forehead) with both hands wet and take them behind to the
back of the head, then bring both hands back to the front from
where the wiping began (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 185, Sahih Muslim: 236).

The Holy Prophet () wiped his head only once (Sahih Al-
Bukhari: 186, Sahih Muslim: 235).

Wipe the ears. Insert the index fingers in the ear canal and
after passing them through the inside, wipe the back of the
ears with the thumbs (Sunan Ibn Majah: 439, Sunan Abi Dawood: 131).

Wash your right foot three times including the ankle, wipe
between your toes using the pinky finger (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 1934,
Jami ‹al-Tirmidhi: 39).

Wash your left foot three times including the ankle, wipe
between your toes using the pinky finger (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 1934,
Jami ‹al-Tirmidhi: 39).

After completing ablution, recite this masnoon

supplication:
I bear witness that there is no true god but Allah. He
is alone. He has no partner. And I bear witness that
Muhammad () is the servant and messenger of Allah
(Sahih Muslim: 234).
10 PRAYER
The Method of Tayammum
In case water is not available, then the act of rubbing soil
on your hands and face with the intention of purification is
called tayammum. The method for this is to strike the hands
on the ground once and then cleanse them. Then wipe (masah)
the left hand with the right hand and the right hand with the
left hand. Then with both hands wipe (masah) the face (Sahih
Al-Bukhari: 338 ,347, Sahih Muslim: 368).

Qibla and Sutrah

It is necessary to face the qiblah for prayers (Al-Baqarah: 144).

If you have to offer supererogatory prayers (Salat al-nafl)

on a ride, start the prayers by turning the ride once towards
the qibla. Afterwards, the direction of the ride is not an issue.
(Obligatory prayers are not permissible unless in case of an
extreme compulsion) (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 1000, Sahih Muslim: 700).

The Holy Prophet () said: Do not pray facing the graves,
nor sit on the graves (Sahih Muslim: 972).

Sutrah is referred to as an object (barrier) that the worshipper

places in front of him so that any person passing in front of
him does not become a sinner. Hence, take consideration of the
Sutrah during salat. The height of the sutrah is of the height
of the back plank of a saddle. This is about 1.25 feet in length
(Sahih Muslim: 499).

The Imam’s sutrah is enough for the followers (Sahih Al-

Bukhari: 493).

The Divine Order of Congregational Prayer

PRAYER 11

It is obligatory for men to pray in congregation in the

mosque. Because the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said:

By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, I was about to order

for collecting firewood (fuel) and then order Someone to
pronounce the Adhan for the prayer and then order someone
to lead the prayer then I would go from behind and burn
the houses of men who did not present themselves for the
(compulsory congregational) prayer (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 644, Sahih
Muslim: 651).

It is permissible for women to pray in the mosque but not

necessary. It is better for women to pray at home (Sahih Al-Bukhari:
873, Sahih Muslim: 442, Sunan Abi Dawood: 567).

THE COMPLETE METHOD OF

PRAYING SALAT AND MASNOON
SUPPLICATIONS
Takbir Al Oola
Facing the qibla, saying Allahu Akbar, perform Rafa
Yadain, i.e raise both hands up to the shoulders (Sahih Al-Bukhari:
738).

It is called Takbir-e-Oola because it is the first Takbir of

prayers. It is also called Takbir-e-Tahreema because with this
many things become forbidden (haram) for the worshipper.

The Method of Raf-ul-Yadain

(The act of lifting hands)
When lifting the hands, the fingers should be straight
12 PRAYER
and not bent (Sunan Abi Dawood: 753, Jami ‹al-Tirmidhi: 240).

The Holy Prophet () used to raise both hands up to

his shoulders (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 735).

The Holy Prophet () used to raise his hands

(sometimes) up to his ears (Sahih Muslim: 391).

It has not been proven to touch the ears with the hands
while performing Raf-ul-Yadain (Hamesh Talkhees Sifat-u-
Salat-nabi): p. 13).

This method is for both men and women. The difference

between the two is not clear (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 231).

The Method of Folding Your Hands

Waael Bin Hujar explaining the method of the Holy
Prophet ()’s prayer mentioned that he () used to
place his right hand on the (backside of the ) palm,
joints and wrist (Sunan an-Nisa›i: 890).

Prayers/ Supplications after the Takbir e Oola

Many prayers have been approved after Takbir-e-
Tahreema. Any one of them can be read.

Abu Huraira () narrates that the Messenger of Allah ()

used to remain silent for some time between the first Takbir
and the recitation. I said: Messenger of Allah! My parents
sacrificed for you. What do you recite in the silence between
Takbir-e-Tahreema and recitation? He said: I read this:

Glory be to Thee, O Allah, and Praise be to Thee and
Blessed is Thy name, and Exalted is Thy greatness, and
there is no god but Allah (Sunan Abi Dawood: 775, and Sahih
Al-Albani).

Any one of these three prayers can be recited. After reciting

the dua, since the Qur›an is recited, the Ta’awwudh is recited
before the recitation of Qur’an.

Ta’awwudh
Ta’awwudh means to seek refuge. That is, seeking refuge
14 PRAYER
in Allah from Satan. You can read one of the following.

I seek refuge in Allah, All-Hearing and All-Knowing

spitting (nafth) (Sunan Abi Dawood: 775, and Sahih Al-Albani).

After reciting any one of the two Ta’awwudh, Surah Al-

Fatihah is recited.

‫ﭽﭑ ﭒ ﭓ ﭔ ﭕ ﭼ‬
‫ﭽﭖﭗﭘﭙﭚ ﭛﭜﭝﭞ‬

and everything). Guide us to the Straight Way. The Way
of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not
(the way) of those who earned Your Anger nor of those

Recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah is necessary in every rak›ah,

because the Holy Prophet () said:
َ َ َ ْ ََْ ْ َ ْ َ ََ َ َ
ِ ‫‘ال صالة لِمن لم ي ق رأ بِفاتِح ِة الكِت‬
’‫اب‬
There is no salat for the one that does not recite Surah
Fatiha. (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 756).

After this (recite Bismillah ir rahman ir rahim) and any

part of the Holy Quran can be recited. However, the Sunnah is
to recite the entire Surah in each rak'ah.

The importance and virtue of Surah Ikhlas is great. The

Prophet () said to a Companion who loved this Surah:
Your love for this Surah will make you enter Paradise.(Sahih
Al-Bukhari: 774). Hence, the Prophet (PBUH) swore: By Him in
Whose Hand my life is, this Surah is equal to one-third of the
Qur›an! (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 5013). This is why at least this surah
should be memorized by heart.

‫ﭽﭑ ﭒ ﭓ ﭔ ﭕ ﭼ‬

PRAYER 19

RUKU (BOW DOWN)

To go into ruku ‹, raise both hands up to the shoulders (or
ears) saying Allah-u-Akbar (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 735). (In the hadith,
Rafa-ul-Yadain is mentioned four times in the prayer (prayer
of four rakat), while in the Hanafi jurisprudence, there is only
one mention (in the beginning of prayer).

In ruku ‹, the back should be straight and the head should

be level with the back, meaning the head should not be high
or low and the palms of both hands should be on both knees
(Sahih Muslim 498). Keep both arms stretched, they should not
bend (Sunan Abi Dawood: 734).

Supplications for the Ruku

There are many prayers to be recited during ruku. Any
single prayer can be recited.

‫ف‬
How Perfect You are, O Allah, Our Lord, and praise is
to You, O Allah, forgive me). (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 794).

Hallowed be You and with Your praise; there is no god
but You (Sahih Muslim 485).
Glory be to my Lord Almighty (Sahih Muslim 772).

QOOMA
The state after ruku is called qooma.
20 PRAYER
The way to do this is to while you raise your head
from the ruku› recite ‫الل لِ َم ْن َح ِمده‬ ‫ ِ ع‬and raise the hands
together (rafa yadain) (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 735 ,796).

After that, read this supplication:

ً َ َ ُ ً ِّ َ ً َ ً ْ َ ُ ْ َ َ َ َ َ َّ َ
’‫اركا فِي ِه‬ ‫‘ربنا ول الحمد حمدا كثِريا ط يبا مب‬
O our Lord! All the praises are for You, many good and
blessed praises (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 799).

SUJUD (Prostration)
The way to do this is to first place both hands on the
ground. Then place the knees on the ground (Sunan Abi Dawood:
840, Sahih Al-Albani).

Then place the forehead and nose well on the ground and
take special care of it (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 812). Keep both hands
at shoulder level (Sunan Abi Dawood: 734).

It is also correct at the level of ears (Sunan Abi Dawood: 726).

Keep the tips of the toes of both feet facing the Qibla (Sahih
Al-Bukhari: 828) and keep both feet standing (Sahih Muslim: 486).

In sujud, bring the two heels together (Al-Sunan al-Kubra

l-Bayhaqi: 2719, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah: 654).

Keep the chest, stomach and thighs above the ground.

Separate the stomach from the thighs and the thighs from the
shins, and keep both thighs separate from each other (Sunan Abi

A total of seven limbs are used in sujud. As the Prophet

I have been ordered to prostrate on seven bones i.e. on
the forehead along with the tip of the nose and the Prophet
pointed towards his nose, both hands, both knees and the toes
of both feet and not to gather the clothes and the hair (Sahih Al-
Bukhari: 812 ,809).

Therefore, it is absolutely wrong for women to spread their

arms. On the contrary, the Prophet () likened this method to
a dog and forbade it (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 822, Sahih Muslim: 493).

Supplications for sujud

Beware. I have been forbidden to recite the Qur›an
while bowing or prostrating; so while in the bowing
(position) glorify (the Perfection of) the Rabb (Lord),
and while in the prostrating (position) be earnest in
supplication, for it is fitting that your supplications
22 PRAYER
may be answered (Sahih Muslim: 479).

Therefore, in the obligatory prayers, recite the masnoon

supplications of sajdah in obligatory prayers however
in supererogatory prayer (salat al nafl) other masnoon
supplications can be recited. Here are some important prayers
for sujud:
ُ 1.

Glory be to my lord most high (Sahih Muslim 772).

ُ 2.

Glorified be You, O Allah, our Lord! All the praises are

for You. O Allah, forgive me (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 794).
All-Glorious, All-Holy, Lord of the angels and spirit
(Gabriel) (Sahih Muslim 536).

Jalsa (To sit between the two sujud)

That is, to sit between the two sujud.

The method of this is to as you get up from sujud, spread

your left foot on the ground and sit on it (Jami ‹al-Tirmidhi: 304).

Keep your right foot straight (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 828).

The other way is that sometimes the prophet () would

keep both of his feet straight and sit on his heels (Sahih Muslim:
536).
PRAYER 23

Supplications for the Jalsa

O Lord forgive me, O Lord forgive me (Sunan Abi Dawood:
874).

JALSA ISTIRAHAT
After completing the second sajdah, one rak›ah has been
completed, now it is time to get up for the second rak›ah. The
way to get up is to sit like the jalsa while saying Allahu Akbar.

When each joint comes to its place, then stand up. This
happens after the odd rakat of prayers (Sunan Abi Dawood: 730,
Sahih Al-Bukhari: 823 ,824).

THE SECOND RAK›AH

When you stand up for the second rak›ah, start reciting
Surah Al-Fatihah. There is no rest in the start of this rak›ah
(Sahih Muslim: 599). The rest of the complete method is the same
as the first rak›ah.

THE FIRST TASHAHHUD

It is also called Qa’da Oola. The method of this is that after
two rak›ats (rising from the second sujud) the left foot should
be spread to sit on and the right foot should be kept standing
(Sahih Al-Bukhari: 828 ,827).

Place your right hand on your right knee and your left hand
on your left knee. (Sahih Muslim: 579). Then recite the tashahhud
in the first Tashahhud:
ُ َ َ َ ُ َ َّ َّ َ ُ َ َ َّ َ َّ ُ َّ َّ

All the best compliments and the prayers (verbal, bodily
and monetary) and the good things are for Allah. Peace
and Allah’s Mercy and Blessings be on you, O Prophet!
Peace be on us and on the pious slaves of Allah, I testify
that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and
I also testify that Muhammad is Allah’s slave and His
Messanger. (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 831).

RAFA E SABBABA
«Rafa» means «to raise» and «Sabbaba» means «index
finger» (the finger next to the thumb).

That is, when sitting for prayer during tashahhud, then

raise the index finger.

According to Sahih Muslim, when the Prophet(PBUH)

used to sit in prayer, he would place both his hands on his
knees and lift his right finger, which is close to the thumb, and
then would pray (Sahih Muslim: 580).

Praying means holding the index finger up, as evidenced

by other ahadith (Sahih Muslim: 579).

The method is to place the right hand on the right thigh

and the left hand on the left thigh and the middle finger of
the right hand and the edges of the thumb together to form
a circle and keep the index finger raised. Close the remaining
two fingers of the right hand. (Sunan Abi Dawood: 991 ,726, Sunan An-
Nisa›i: 890).
PRAYER 25
It is to be noted that raising the finger at ‫َْأش َهد أن ال إل َه إِل‬
‫الل َوأش َهد أن ُم َح َ ّم ًمدا َعبْده َو َر ُسوله‬ is not proven by any sahih
hadith.

THE THIRD RAK›AH

When rising for the third rakah from the Qa’da Oola, say
Allahu Akbar and lift your hands (rafa yadain) (Sahih Al-Bukhari:
739). Then recite Surah Al-Fatihah.

THE LAST QA’DA

This qa’da occurs after completing the last rak›ah of the
prayer (after completing the second sujud).

The method of this is to sit on the left hip in such a way that
the right foot is kept straight and the toes are facing the qiblah
and the left foot is protruding from under the right shin. This
condition is called Tawarruk (Sunan Abi Dawood: 730).

Like Qa›da Oola, there will also be rafa e sabbaba and

Tashahhud in it, but at the same time, Durood Ibrahimi and
more supplications will have to be recited.
