Amorphous polymer model and calibration (Ames, 2003)

1. Calibration of the Loading Response

(𝛼)
1.1. Defining 𝜇̇ (𝛼) = 0, elimination of 𝜇𝑐𝑣 and 𝑐 (𝛼),
(𝛼)
𝜇𝑐𝑣 = 0 MPa, 𝑐 (0) = 0 MPa.
1.2. Assume that the initial values of the viscoplastic 𝜇 (𝛼) ate equivalent since the initial values
are quite linear,
(1)
𝜇𝑖 = 𝜇𝑖 = 𝜇 (2) = 𝜇 (3) .
1.3. Define 𝜇 (0) as reasonably insignificant in the fitting procedure,
𝜇 (0) = 0 MPa.
1.4. The model is approximated as rate-independent, choosing 𝑚(𝛼) to be a small number,
𝑚(𝛼) = 0.01.
1.5. The value for 𝜖̇0 is set in order to match the strain rate,
𝜖̇ (𝛼) = 0.0003.
1.6. By examining the initial portion of the experimental stress-strain curve, the Young’s
Modulus and an approximated value for 𝜇𝑖 can be easily determined.
(1)
𝐸, 𝜇𝑖 , 𝜇 (2) , 𝜇 (3) .
(1,2,3)
1.7. It is possible to determine a range in which 𝑠𝑖 should lie.
(1,2,3)
20 MPa < 𝑠𝑖 < 60 MPa.
(0)
1.8. The value of 𝑠𝑖 should be at the point where the stress-strain curve starts to significantly
deviate from linearity.
(0)
𝑠𝑖 = 80 MPa.
1.9. From Gearing (2003), it is chosen the rubbery modulus (𝜇𝑅 ) and the locking stretch (𝜆𝐿 ),
𝜇𝑅 = 10 MPa, 𝜆𝐿 = 1.5.
1.10. It is supposed that 𝜑𝑖 should be zero.
𝜑𝑖 = 0.
1.11. The parameter ℎ0 is the only one that affects the pre-yield slope.
ℎ0 .
1.12. The parameter 𝜑𝑐𝑣 can be fixed because its influence can be monitored be changing the
parameters 𝑏 and 𝑔0 together,
𝜑𝑐𝑣 = 0.001,
𝑏, 𝑔0 .
1.13. Changes in 𝑠𝑐𝑣 simply shift the region up and down,
(0)
𝑠𝑐𝑣 .
2. Calibration of the Unloading Response
(𝛼)
2.1. The objective is to find reasonable values for 𝑐 (𝛼) and 𝜇𝑐𝑣 .
(1) (2) (3)
𝜇𝑐𝑣 > 𝜇𝑐𝑣 > 𝜇𝑐𝑣 , 𝑐 (1) > 𝑐 (2) > 𝑐 (3) .

2.2. Plot 𝜇̇ (𝛼) with strain to verify the proper softening rates of 𝜇 (𝛼) one should pick a strain
(𝛼)
level at which 𝜇 (𝛼) should reach 𝜇𝑐𝑣 and choose 𝑐 (𝛼) in order to obtain that goal. If 𝑐 (𝛼) is
too high, problems may appear.
𝜇 (𝛼)
𝜇̇ (𝛼) = 𝑐 (𝛼) (1 − (𝛼)
) 𝜑̇ ,
𝜇𝑐𝑣
(𝛼)
𝜇𝑐𝑣 , 𝑐 (𝛼) .
3. Calibration of the Creep Response
3.1. Estimate the rate-sensitivity parameters 𝑚(𝛼).
𝑚(1,2,3) > 𝑚(0) .
