2.using a range of lexis accurately
3.ability to interact with other speakers
4.buing intelligible to the listener

Suggested Response

1. Range and accuracy of grammar: using a range of grammatical structures accurately.

Ana makes some mistakes. For example, she says: ‘I’m always very lazy to go there’ instead of ‘I’m too
lazy to go there’. However, these do not impede put a strain on the listener and do not impede
communication. She uses a range of grammatical structures, including the superlative (e.g. ‘one of the
most important in Spain’) and the present perfect (e.g. ‘I haven’t been in lots of parts.’)

2. Range and accuracy of lexis: using a range of lexis (collocations, word formation) accurately and
appropriately.

Ana makes some mistakes. For example, she says, ‘You have lots of options to do’ instead of ‘you have a
lot of things to do.’ However, these do not put a strain on the listener and do not impede
communication. Moreover, she has a good range of lexis, and is able to discuss a range of topics using it.

3. Interactive communication: ability to interact with other speakers and respond appropriately.

She interacts appropriately with the examiner. She listens, does not interrupt and answers the questions
she is asked. However, she does not always explain her views, in particular in her answer about London.
4. Pronunciation: being intelligible to the listener by producing appropriate sounds, stress and
intonation.

Ana is intelligible throughout the interview, and does not put a strain on the listener.

5. Fluency and coherence: ability to talk fluently and for the listener to follow without strain.

Ana is able to do this throughout the interview. For example, she uses fillers to give herself thinking time
(e.g. she says ‘erm’) which contributes to her fluency. In terms of coherence, in her answer on Madrid,
she gives her opinion, and then some examples, which is a logical progression.
