WHAT IS VOCABULARY?

 All the words of a language or the words used by a particular group or person.
 Vocabulary is all the language and words either used or understood by a person or
group of people.
 EXAMPLE:
 A language used by doctors .
 A language understood by toddlers.
“WITHOUT GRAMMAR VERY LITTLE CAN BE CONVEYED,
WITHOUT VOCABULARY NOTHING CAN BE CONVEYED.”
WHAT IS VOCABULARY TEST?

Definition:
 A test for knowledge (as of meaning or use )of a selected list of words that is
often used as part of an intelligence test.
 It is a kind of test which measures the vocabulary of a person.
PURPOSE OF VOCABULARY TEST

 The primary purpose of vocabulary test is to measure the comprehension and


production of words both in speaking and writing.
 Distinguishes learners effectively according to their level of vocabulary
knowledge.
 Furthermore it measures the learners’ reading comprehension.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
VOCABULARY TEST
 The test must provide more context than a single sentence.
 The items must assess lexis within a limited number of semantic fields.
 The test taker should understand what the communicative purpose of the task is .
 One must know who the audience is.
 Meaning rather than form should be given importance.
WHAT IS A WORD IN VOCABULARY?

 A word is a highly complex phenomenon.


 Words have different functions.
 The same word can have a variety of forms.
 Different words can have similar meanings.
 Similar words can have different meanings in different contexts.
WHAT DOES KNOW A WORD MEAN?

 KNOWING A WORD MEANS:


 Having the ability to recognize its spoken as well as written form.
 Knowing its different meanings.
 Being able to pronounce it properly.
 Also being able to recognize different kinds of English accents e .g :
 LIFT/ELEVATOR.
