DEFINITION AND
USAGE
A vocabulary is a set of familiar words within a person's language. Usually
developed with age, serves as a useful and fundamental tool for communication
and acquiring knowledge. Acquiring an extensive vocabulary is one of the largest
challenges in learning a second language.
REMEMBER
Productive knowledge is the knowledge to produce a word when one writes or speaks.
Generally, researchers believed that words are known receptively first and only after intentional or
incidental learning become available for productive use.
Vocabulary knowledge is a continuum on which a word grows from receptive to productive status
the transfer from receptive.
Second language learners’ receptive vocabulary size is much larger than their productive
vocabulary size.

Reading vocabulary refers to the words we need to know to understand what
we read. Vocabulary plays a fundamental role in the reading process and
contributes greatly to a reader's comprehension.
Listening vocabulary refers to the words we need to know to understand what
we hear. Speaking vocabulary consists of the words we use when we speak
Writing vocabulary consists of the words we use in writing. Good writers can
pull out the right tools at the right time to make good writing even more
powerful. One tool that can “power up” your writing is a strong vocabulary.

Facts about teaching
Vocabulary
Teachers need to spend quite a lot of time on teaching new vocabulary and
reviewing it throughout the year.
Teachers need to take more care in selecting which items to teach.
About 12 new items a week in elementary school, about 20 in junior high, about
30 in high school must be selected by teachers
In order to make sure that students have mastered the items, they need to review
them at least ten times, probably more.
Teachers will need to review new items she/he have taught not only at the end of
the same lesson or unit but will need to come back to them regularly over the
whole year.
Ideas for Teaching Vocabulary in the Classroom
Semantic Maps: Teacher chooses a word and displays it for the class on a whiteboard,
etc.. Students read the word and then think of words that come to mind when they see that
word (this is awesome because it activates prior learning).
Eye Spy: Give students a list of words to search for in a text or have them find unfamiliar
words. You can award points to the words based on different criteria (longest new word,
word with most consonants, etc.). (do this as pre reading activity)
Word Pairs: Give students words in pairs and have them evaluate if the words are the
same, opposite, go together, or are unrelated.
Games: Such as bingo and memory games, Many “real” games work well for vocab play
and practice.

game
