Listening lesson plan (suhair Oraif)

Aims: The aim in labelling a map is to connect the information that students hear in the
listening to the gaps in the map.
Goals:
To help students answer labelling map or plan IELTS questions more effectively by looking at
common problems.
To help students to use useful language and giving them a strategy to use on test day.
To show student listening to the directions can be tricky for some people.
To introduce possible ways students can find distractions during the listening section and
improve predicting skills using contextual and co-textual clues.

Activities Time Interaction

Warm up 7 mins
Explain to students that the next exercises involve labelling a 2 mins T- Ss
map and direct learners’ attention to the Exam information box
at the top of the page.
Revise with students the direction context (e.g. next to, behind, T- Ss

3 mins T-Ss

map is important.

The main Activity 15 mins

Before starting the main activity, teacher ask students some 1 min T- Ss
questions for discussion:
What kind of distractions can you find in the listening section?
Teacher play Audio (Ant Colonies Avoid Traffic Jams) as an 3 mins T-Ss
example and shows the following question:
How do ants get their food?
What Motsch and his colleagues wanted to know? 2 mins Ss-Ss
What was the goal?
Teacher shows the transcript of the audio and clarifies the
1 min
distraction.
Ss-T
Teacher says the following information:
It is important that you neither get distracted nor miss the
information. However, shuffling from your question paper to 8 mins T-Ss
answer sheet while listening to the audio is not feasible. It
consumes more time, confuses you at times and also distracts
you. Keeping it simple, don't read, hear and write simultaneously.
Extension activity 8 mins S
Ss-Ss
Teacher ask students to listen to the (Bedford Doctor’s
Surgery). IELTS listening section.
Teacher asks Students to work individually.
Students check and compare their answers.
Teacher asks if Students found any distractions and shows the
answers.
Feedback 2mins
Some students were quite strong in other areas, they all seemed T-Ss
to have a real hard time with the map labelling task. The
exercise was quite similar to this one on the ielts.org website,
where students need to label the correct rooms in the library.
