The four vocal rhythms in the main portion of the work, each with its own character and function, are essential to creating the unique energy and movement of “Village.” Only when they are sung together does a truly joyful spirit arise. It takes a whole village to raise our children It takes a whole village to raise one child We all every one must share the burden We all every one will share the joy. ~ text by the composer, adapted from a West African saying Performance notes ‘The soprano “hé” should be sung without an ending dipthong, the ch sound as the Italian E (eh). It should be thythmically driving, but not heavy. Sing the “mm-ah” with an enormous amount of resonant intensity in the hum which bursts into an “ah” vowel that is very bright and focused, almost piercing. The “we all” ostinato should be sung with the two vowels gliding together—singers should not leave space before the “all.” (The text here is secondary to creating a feeling of fluidity and delight.) The “every one” bass line is the founda- tion. Sing with a steady open sound, like a trombone.
