Abstract

The roles play by technology these days are very crucial not only to a few but also everyone. The ever
growing society has made people see technology as some form of necessity

The word “technology” came from greek words techne means art and logos means word. Taking the
two words together, Technology means discourse on arts (Buchanan, 2010)

Concepts like machine and tools were also attached to the word “Technology” which is the more
popular sense of the concept nowadays.

Television sets, mobile phones and computers and humanity a number of technological devices can be
easily found inside the home, the most accessible place to anyone.

The significance of Technology affects the way individuals communicate, learn, and think. It helps
society and determines how people interact with each other on a daily basis. Technology plays an
important role in society today. It has positive and negative effects on the world and it impacts daily
lives.

Introduction

Technology keeps on progressing due to the changing times in environment and also to the ever
progressing mind of mankind. Humans are inherently technological beings or two users. We are
deficient beings who use technology to complement, enhance or disburden ourselves. Technology has
without a doubt become a central part of the human condition for better and worse. The good life
entails living in adjust and progressive society who citizens have the freedom to flourish. The human
person has the autonomy to make choices which may enable the flourishing of his or herself and society.

TELEVISION SETS, MOBILE PHONES,COMPUTERS AND HUMANITY

•According to Kantar Media, one of the mosttrusted television audience measurementproviders, in the
Philippines, 92 percent of urbanhomes and 70 percent of rural homes owns atleast one television set.
•The current count of households with televisionset already reached 15.135 million (Noda, 2012)

-Paul Gottlieb Nipkow, a German student in the late 1800’s was successful in his attempt to send images
through wires with the aid of a rotating disk. This invention was then called the “electric telescope” that
has 18 lines of resolution.

°After some time, in 1907, two inventors, AlanArchibald Campbell-Swinton who was an Englishscientist
and Boris Rosingwho was a Russianscientist, created a new system of television byusing cathode ray
tube in addition to themechanical scanner system.
°This success story gave rise to two types oftelevision systems, the mechanical and electronictelevision.

:Filipinos love to use their mobile phonesanywhere, anytime. They use it for differentpurposes other
than for communication.
:More than half of the Filipino populationown at least one (1) mobile phone regardlessof type.

•To prove that Filipinos really love to use theirmobile phones, the Ipsos Media Atlas
PhilippinesNationwide Urban 2011-2012 survey resultsshowed that one in every 3 Filipinos cannot
livewithout a mobile phone.
•In other words, 30% of the Philippines urbanpopulation nationwide said that mobile phoneare
necessities in life.

FIRST MOBILE PHONE

•Mobile phones, have a very interestingbackground story. On April 3, 1973, MartinCopper, a senior
engineer at Motorola, made the
world’s first mobile phone call.
•He called their rival telecommunications companyand properly informed them that he was makingthe
call from a mobile phone.

:The mobile phone used by Copper weighed 1.1 kilograms andmeasured 228.6 x 127 x 44.4 mm.
:This kind of device was capable of a 30-minute talk time. However, ittook 10 hours to charge.
:In 1983, Motorola made their first commercial mobile phoneavailable to the public.
:It was known as the Motorola DynaTAC8000X.

COMPUTER
-Computers and Laptops have also become part of many of theFilipino households.
•There are some Filipino families who own more than onecomputer or laptop.
•The number of computers sold per year may not be as high asthe number of mobile phones and
television sets.
•In line with the growing number of computer sales, there hasalso been a growing number of internet
users in the Philippines.
Charles Babbage, a 19th century English Mathematicsprofessor, who designed the Analytical Engine
whichwas used as the basic framework of the computers evenuntil the present time.
•In general, computers can be classified into 3generations. Each generation of the computer was
usedfor a certain period of time and each gave people a newand improved version of the previous one.
•Laptops have been available to the public, for even aless time than personal computers.

•Before, the first design of computer was so big that itcould occupy whole floors of buildings.
•The first TRUE portable computer was released in April1981. it was called the Osborne 1.
•A typical household owns at least four of the followingdevices: a mobile phone (89%), smartphone
(53%),tablet (14%), desktop (39%), laptop of netbooks (37%)and a smart TV (4%)

Here are some facts about Filipinos and their use ofgadgets and Internet
•Mobile phone subscription is at 119 million.
•Filipinos spend approximately 3.2 hours on mobile phones and5.2 hours on desktop daily.
•Currently, the Philippines has one of the highest digitalpopulation in the world.
•There are now 47 million active Facebook accounts in thePhilippines.
•The Philippines is the fastest-growing application market inSoutheast Asia.

Roles Played by These TechnologicalAdvancements

•For instance, television is mainly used as a platform foradvertisements and information
dissemination. In fact, television remains to be the most used avenue bydifferent advertising
companies not only in thePhilippines but all over the world.
•Television also is a good platform for differentpropagandas and advocacies. Lastly, it can also
be a good way to bond with one’s family members.

•Mobile phones, on the other hand, also have their ownroles in the lives of the people. They
are primarily usedfor communication. Mobile phones offer services liketexting and calling.
•In the present, people use their mobile phones to surfto the internet and to take pictures
more than text or tocall people.
•It is like an all-in-one device.
•Very portable and convenient because it can fit into anyspace, may it be inside the pocket or
bag.
•Personal computers and laptops also have useful set offunctions and roles.
•People prefer to do their job using either a PC or laptopthat a mobile phone. One reason is
that laptop has awide keyboard than using a mobile phone, especiallywhen the mobile phone
has a small screen.
•Another reason is that the availability of a mouse or atouchpad made easier to maneuver than
mobilephones.
•Lastly, for the youth who love ton play differentcomputer games, PC are really the better
choicebecause it allows them to play with comfort andconvenience.

ETHICAL DILEMMA FACED BY THESETECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS

•Most parents would argue that these devices make theirchildren lazy and unhealthy.
•There are some people who are more likely toexperience alienation because they no longer take
timeto get out of their houses and mingle with other people.
•Moral dilemma-people, especially children who are notcapable yet of rationally deciding for
themselves what isright or wrong, are freely exposed to different things in
television, mobile phones, PC’s etc.

HUMANS vs. ROBOTS

•With the development of artificial intelligence(AI), robots may also eventually act and decidelike
humans.
•Though the Philippines has not yet reached thepoint of producing robots on commercial scalefor
household use, it still behooves us to ponderthe ramifications of replacing persons withmachineries.
•With the help of AI, decisions now arise fromsophisticated statistical analyses made frommassive data.
•As of August 2017, it is estimated that a millionFilipino BPO (business process outsourcing)workers may
be affected and lose their jobs withthe adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) .
ROBOT
•A robot is an actuated mechanism programmable in towor more axes with a degree of autonomy,
moving withinits environment, to perform intended tasks. Autonomy inthis context means the ability to
perform intended tasksbased on current state and sensing without humanintervention.
•A service robot is a robot that performs useful tasks forhumans or equipment excluding industrial
automationapplication. NOTE: a robot may be classified according toits intended application as an
industrial robot or a servicerobot

LAWS FOR ROBOTS

•Just like people living in a society, robots alsohave their own set of rules and characteristics thatdefine
what a good robots is. These laws wereformulated by Isaac Asimov in the 1940s, when hewas thinking
of the ethical consequences ofrobots.
•LAW ONE : a robot may not require a humanbeing or, through inaction, allow a human beingto come
to harm.
•LAW TW0: a robot must obey the ordersgiven by human beings except where suchorders would
conflict with the first law.
•LAW TRHREE: a robot must protect its ownexistence as long as such protection doesnot conflict with
the first or second law.

ETHICAL DILEMMAS FACED BY ROBOTICS

1.SAFETY-the safety of not only the owner of thetechnology but also all the people inside thehouse
should be priority mote than anythingelse.
2.EMOTIONAL COMPONENT-it is just right forthe robots to be given their own set of rightsshould they
develop the ability to feel differentkinds of emotion. It can be argued that the samething happened with
animals.
