INTRODUCTION

Problem Statement:

With this practice we want to know if a memory game can help us to better understand the
laboratory materials and rules, in order to make better use of it.

Research Background:

Biology is often described as the study of living things and their vital processes. Biological research is
more important now than ever for humans since there are over 10 billion people living on the planet,
which is why it is fundamental to know what it takes to do biological research in a laboratory.

Researches that require the use of the laboratory (a place equipped for experimental study in a
science or for testing and analysis1) must always be planned prior to the experiment. In the laboratory
the researcher must always be aware of the equipment they will be using to perform the experiment
making sure it works properly and has high quality.

The equipment’s quality and functionality can affect whether the results achieved are reliable or not.
At times the laboratory equipment can be different depending on the laboratory the experiment will
be done. However some materials are essential in all laboratories.2

Talking about a biology laboratory the essential materials will be: microscope (mainly used to
magnify small objects and to observe specimens at a cellular level), beaker (cylindrical container
that has a small spout and a flat base), crucible (small container made up of ceramic or metal), test
tubes (glass or plastic that has a hemispherical base), bunsen burner (gas burner that produces a
single open gas flame), flask (commonly used to store the solutions; many shapes and sizes), dropper
(used to control the amount of solution that will be added to a reaction), weighing machine
(determine the mass or weight of certain objects), spatula (mainly used for mixing substances into a
solution), wash bottles (used to rinse various laboratory glassware), pipette (transport a measured
amount of liquid to a container), funnel (channel the flow of liquid in a particular direction), watch
glass (used to evaporate a liquid, hold a specimen, cover a beaker, heat amount of substance),
measuring cylinders (measure the amount of solution poured into it), and petri dishes (used to culture
different types of cells).3

As there are essentials materials in the laboratory, there are also fundamental rules that must be
followed in any kind of laboratory such as: no food or drink, good hygiene, use proper storage

containers, do not work alone, tie your hair if it is long, and use your laboratory coat, gloves and eye
protection all the time.4

Finally, as this is a school practice we should know the basic characteristics that the laboratory at this
place has. It must have all the essential material and equipment, a student work space, first aid kit, a
storage room or cabinet, a tally and a laboratory shower, among other.5

Objectives:

Our objective is to use the memory game to learn about the material and equipment in order to
guarantee reliable results and safety during practice.

Hypothesis:

We think that if we use a memory game, then we will learn the names and understand how to use
the laboratory material and equipment properly.

METHODS

The activities developed during the practice are described in paragraphs and in past participle,
including date, place, material and waste management.

We went to the laboratory on August 24th. Before going inside the laboratory, as we are a team of
girls with long hair, we all tied up our hair and put on our laboratory cotton coat. We then went to
the laboratory, and before starting the practice, the teacher told us the name of the laboratory
materials and how the practice should be developed. We started the practice by sitting around and
mixing the cards, then we accommodated them facing down and started playing.

The rules were that if you got a pair, then you had the chance to look for another pair until you lost. If
you took a pair and it didn´t match, then you had another three chances to obtain a pair.

We played the memory game following the rules set during the hour and when it finished, we picked
up the cards and gave it back to the teacher.

Finally, we took notes about the results and we went back to our classroom.

RESULTS

Observations description and data obtained. Described photos can be included.

Every team member obtained a different result, and the winner of the memory game was Alexandra
who got 7 pairs of cards. The runners-up were Ana Sofia, who obtained 4 pairs of cards, then Erika
and Valery, who both obtained 3 pairs, and finally Natalia with 2 pairs of cards.

Now, let's talk about the laboratory material. On the one hand, we observed that there were some
materials that we recognized more easily than others such as the microscope, the bunsen burner, the
test tubes, the spatula, the wash bottle, the funnel, some pipettes, and the petri dishes.

But on the other hand, we observed that just as it was easier for us to recognize some materials, it was
difficult for us to recognize others such as the propipette, the Pasteur pipet, the analytical balance,
the burette, the asbestos grill, among others.

DISCUSSION

Analysis and interpretation of data and observations.

After doing this practice we observed that playing this memory game was not useful for us to learn
the laboratory materials, but it helped us to see how the material looked.

We suggest that if the objective of the practice is to learn about the laboratory materials, then we
should have a class about the laboratory equipment beforehand, so that we can learn and play
easier. Another thing that we could possibly do, is to take notes during the game to know which
materials are easier or harder to recognize, so that we can review them later.

Finally, we think that it is easier to recognize some laboratory materials because we have previously
worked with them in other school years, or because they have similar names in our first language,
spanish.

CONCLUSIONS

The central idea or ideas that you arrived at are mentioned.

As we mentioned before, knowing the laboratory material and equipment is important because it
helps us recognize how the material looks, and to know which materials are difficult or harder to
recognize.

We did not meet our objective, neither our hypothesis, because we did not memorize all of the
laboratory materials, and at a certain point, it was difficult to continue playing because we did not
know what the materials looked like or their names in english.

Although we didn't meet our main objective, which was to memorize and learn completely about
the laboratory materials, we did become more familiar with the laboratory rules, such as wearing a
cotton coat at all times, having our hair tied up, etc.
