Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Cassandra Torres Date: 2/24/2022

Group Size: 25 Allotted Time: 30 minutes Grade Level: 4th

Subject or Topic: Scientific Method

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

a. S4.A.2.1.1: Generate questions about objects, organisms, or events that can be
answered through scientific investigations.
b. S.4.A.2.1.2: Design and describe an investigation (a fair test) to test one
variable.
c. S.4.A.2.1.3 : Observe a natural phenomenon (e.g., weather changes, length of
daylight/night, movement of shadows, animal migrations, growth of plants),
record observations, and then make a prediction based on those observations.
d. S.4.2.2.1: State a conclusion that is consistent with the information/data

Learning Targets/Objectives:
● Students will be able to form a question and create a hypothesis for an already done
experiment.

● Students will be able to follow along with a previously done experiment and complete
a lab packet that focuses on the experiment, data collection and conclusion.
Assessment Approaches: Evidence:
1) Lab Packet 1. Completion of the lab packet
following the scientific method steps
Assessment Scale:
80-100% complete= Proficient
50-80% complete= basic
0-50% complete= below basic

Subject Matter/Content: Scientific method steps

Prerequisites:
● An understanding of what a scientist is
● An understanding of what an observation is
● An basic understanding of Science
● An basic Understanding of Experiments
● An understanding of what a scientist is
● An understanding of what an observation is
● An basic understanding of Science
● An basic Understanding of Experiments
● An understanding of the six scientific method steps

Key Vocabulary:

■ The scientific method- a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the
17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the
formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.
■ Question- What do I want to know/ find out
■ Hypothesis- a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a
starting point for further investigation.
■ Experiment- a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or
demonstrate a known fact.
■ Observations- the action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order
to gain information.
■ Analyze- examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of (something,
especially information), typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation.
■ Conclusion- a judgment or decision reached by reasoning.
■ Sunlight: light that comes from the sun

Content/Facts:
● What is the Scientific Method:
6 Steps, Step 1: Problem/ Question, Step 2: Observation, Step 3: Hypothesis,
Step 4: Experiment, Step 5: Collect and analyze data, and Step 6: draw a
conclusion.
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
● “Good Morning friends today in science we will continue to focus on the scientific
method. We will be watching a video since we are virtual today! You will need to get
out your packet. I passed out yesterday during bus time. it is labeled Plant experiment”
● Students will put up the thumbs up signal when they have the packet ready in front of
them.
● Tell students to look at the first question where it states “what do plants need to grow?”
● “When you would like to raise your hand please use the hand raise button and unmute!
what do you think friends what are some things that plants need to grow”
● Encourage good answers and repeat the correct response. tell the students they need
sun, water, air, and soil to grow.

Development/Teaching Approaches
1. “ Let's take a look at the youtube video that walks us through the investigation of what
plants need to grow”
2. The first step was to have a question, they stated what the question was in the video.
Play the video up to 20 seconds after they ask the question and show tej different
materials they will using for the experiment like the plants, soil, water, jars and where
the plants will be placed over the next seven days.
3. Have the students record on there packet what there observations are and any research
they might know about plants.
4. give students 4 minutes to complete question two on their observations and call on
three students that would like to share their response.
5. Once the students are finished with question two, have the students go on to question
three and ask for a volunteer to tell us what the third step of the scientific method is.
6. Encourage positive responses. “Nice work! the third step is to come up with a
hypothesis”
7. Have students make an educated guess on what there hypothesis for this experiment is
going to be based of the video.
8. “Are there any volunteers that would like to share with me what they put down for
their hypothesis?”
9. Encourage positive responses. “Nice work”
10. Play the rest of the video to have the students watch the full run through of the
experiment to show what has happened over the last 7 days to plants that had different
variables.
11. Play the video again but this time have the students pause at certain points in the video.
12. Have the students draw in there chart given to them on what is happening to the plants.
13. have the students record on day 4,5 and 7 for the plants outside with cotton balls,
sealed and not sealed.
14. Then have the students record on day 4,5 and 7 for the plants inside with cotton balls,
sealed and not sealed.
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
● Once the students are finished recording there data in the charts the students will write
there conclusion on what they think there final prediction of the experiment will be.
