Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Cassandra Torres Date: 2/23/2022

Group Size: 25 Allotted Time: 30 minutes Grade Level:4th

Subject or Topic: Scientific Method

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

a. S4.A.2.1.1: Generate questions about objects, organisms, or events that can be
answered through scientific investigations.
b. S.4.A.2.1.2: Design and describe an investigation (a fair test) to test one
variable.
c. S.4.A.2.1.3 : Observe a natural phenomenon (e.g., weather changes, length of
daylight/night, movement of shadows, animal migrations, growth of plants),
record observations, and then make a prediction based on those observations.
d. S.4.2.2.1: State a conclusion that is consistent with the information/data

Learning Targets/Objectives:
● After learning the steps of the scientific method students will be able to define what the
6 steps of the scientific method is.
● Students will be able to identify the first three steps of the scientific method: Observe,
question and hypothesis in a real life scientific method investigation.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1) summative 1) Teacher observation will be used to assess
individual student mastery the scientific method.
2) Completion of packet 2) students will correctly fill out the responses to the
questions asked in the packet
Assessment Scale:
1) Students could answer questions when called on about the steps of the scientific
method
2) All sections of the notes are completed
a) 75- 100 percent of the notes completed: proficient
b) 50-75 percent of the notes completed: Basic
c) 0-50 percent if the notes completed: below basic
Subject Matter/Content:
● Scientific method steps
Prerequisites:
● An understanding of what a scientist is
● An understanding of what an observation is
● An basic understanding of Science
● An basic Understanding of Experiments
● An understanding of the six steps of the scientific method
● An understanding of classification
Key Vocabulary:

■ The scientific method- a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the
17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the
formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.
■ Question- What do I want to know/ find out
■ Hypothesis- a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a
starting point for further investigation.
■ Experiment- a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or
demonstrate a known fact.
■ Observations- the action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order
to gain information.
■ Analyze- examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of (something,
especially information), typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation.
■ Conclusion- a judgment or decision reached by reasoning.

Content/Facts:
● What is the Scientific Method:
○ 6 Steps, Step 1: Problem/ Question, Step 2: Observation, Step 3: Hypothesis,
Step 4: Experiment, Step 5: Collect and analyze data, and Step 6: draw a
conclusion.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
● “Good Morning friends! For science today we are going to continue looking at the
scientific method.”
● Ask students if anyone can tell me the 6 steps in the scientific method. If students need
assistance, provide them with guidance.
● “We will be reviewing these steps and making a study guide so we all can remember
what each step does.”
● Tell students to get out their scissors, Glue Stick and notebooks.
● Pass out the foldable worksheet that has each step of the scientific method on it and
instruct students to cut on the dotted lines.
● While students are cutting out the lines, monitor them to see if any of the students need
any assistance.
● Once students are finished cutting out the dotted lines, have the students glue the
bottom of the foldable in their notebook.

Development/Teaching Approaches
1. “Okay friends When you have the foldable glued in your notebook please get out your
notes from yesterday”
2. students will be paired into groups by using the clothes pin system, once their number
is called that is the partner people they will be working with.
3. “Now that we have good notes and an easy way to look at all 6 steps of the scientific
method we are going to be reading about the different parts of the scientific method and
how to use them in an experiment.”
4. “please take turns reading the paragraphs and answer the questions that go with it,
remember to highlight where you found the answer and talk out the questions with your
partner.”
5. Call the first pair “number 21 and 15, please take a packet and go find an are in the
room to work quietly together”
6. Call the rest of the numbers until all students are paired up and monitor the different
groups.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
● When the students are finished they will quiz each other on different questions based of
the science notes we did yesterday.
● Students will need to tell me what is the step of the scientific method for their exit
ticket in order to line up for the special.
● “What is the third step of the scientific method” continuously ask these questions until
every student is lined up

Accommodations/Differentiation:

FM will have the foldable already cut up for her due to her IEP and time restrictions
