While most parents would never let their children play with a gun, most of those
same parents would allow them to play with a toy gun. What those parents don’t realize is
that toy guns can often be just as dangerous as a real gun. Every year, there are over
11,000 injuries and a smaller number of deaths from toy guns in the US alone. These
accidents can be separated into categories : pellet gun injuries and mistaken shootings.
Pellet gun injuries are by far the most common type of injury which are related to toy
guns. Pellet guns shoot small balls. Most pellet guns are made for older children and
adults. These pellet guns come with warnings which tell children not to shoot the pellet
gun at people. But children are children, and every year, many kids to the hospital after
being shot by their friends.
Mistaken shootings are much more serious, and sadder. They happen because toy gun
makers make their guns resemble real guns. Sometimes, a child may find their parents’
real gun but think it is a toy gun. Every year, there are sad stories of children who kill
their brother, sister, or a friend this way.
