From the first history books ever written, it is clear that horse racing has always

At the beginning of the twentieth century, San Francisco was a beautiful city. There were
many shops and restaurants. People all over the world came to the city to find work and a better
life. Then, on April17th, 1906, there was an earthquake and 80% of the city was destroyed. There
were huge fires and about 3,000 people died. Almost 300,000 people found themselves with no
home. This in a city of only 400,000 people!

There were some serious problems after the earthquake. The biggest problem was the fires.
Many people burned their homes because they were already destroyed. The some people made
campfires and those fires started more fires. Another big problem was that many people started
to steal from stores and houses. The US Army had to help the local police and firemen.

San Francisco gets many earthquakes because it’s on a place where the Earth’s plates meet.
When they rub together, it causes an earthquake. Today, the buildings in San Francisco are made
to be very flexible, so they won’t be destroyed in an earthquake. Still, many people are scared of
another big earthquake.
