Magellan's travel companion was Antonio Pigafetta. Pigafetta was one of only 18 of the about 240 men who
set off with Magellan to return to Spain after a battle on Mactan Island.

Author’s Purpose for writing the document:

The author's purpose is to document the events during their voyage. It is intended to provide important
information on the islands and the people there. He composed it to document his experiences and travels
during Magellan's world-circling expedition.

What was happening in history around the time that the document was written?

Spain and Portugal competed against one another in navigation. The search for the spice island was a race
(Mollucas). It happened as they were returning to Spain by ship. Two ships were headed back to Spain after
the combat in Mactan, while the third ship was a failure. The only ship remaining from the five that departed
on Magellan's triumphant trip to Spain—the first to round the globe—was the Victoria, captained by Juan
Sebastian de Elcano.

The following sequences, which occurred when they engaged in the battle for the second time to trade
bodies for the generals and the other men who died during the conflict under Magellan's command, were
not fully and accurately described by the author. The author also omitted to explain why Chief Cilapulapu
refused to obey the King of Spagnia and why Zalu, the chief of Mactan, instructed one of his sons to present
the captain-general with two goats.

What do you think is the historical significance of this document? (1-3 sentences)

Pigafetta's documents affect society, culture, and the environment. His writings demonstrated to the pilgrims
and others that circumnavigation is feasible. Without his notebook, there would be no record of how
Magellan and his crew could explore the globe successfully, and other people would not have decided to do
the same.
