1. Engage safely, effectively and appropriately with a range of Art, Design & Media

processes and materials;
2. Communicate ideas visually;

The Project in a Nutshell:

 "ART IS A GAME AND GAMES HAVE RULES" : keep an open mind and understand that new skills can be
difficult to master, commitment and repetition are required.
 A line is one-dimensional and can vary in width, direction, and length, whilst stories important for interaction
and knowledge. Stories can not only be told and written but also drawn or compiled.
 During this project day we will explore line and composition sets before selecting and photocopying images
and text from the library to make an extended collaged study.
 In your independent study days this week you are encouraged to continue to develop your project – reviewing,
improving and refining your work, any techniques that you did not complete during the session should be
concluded during self-directed study time.
 You will be able to complete tasks 1-3 during the studio day whilst writing up your day on your assessment
portfolio (Weebly), utilising descriptive/reflective commentary will need to be completed during your self
directed study time.
 By the end of hub 1 you will have documented your progress fully on your Weebly site. Your tutor will explain
how this works and help you to begin this process, but the best way to get this started is to make lots of
sketches and take lots of photographs as your work progresses. As you experiment and make write up
reflective notes as you work through the project (In class and in your independent study time).
 Alongside each image you load to Weebly, write descriptive and reflective commentary on your findings.

Task 1 – Composition Sets

Using the templates provided you will explore a series of monochrome composition studies to investigate how
simple lines communicate, leading your eye around a composition and can communicate information through their
character and direction. Check Padlet for more info on final piece for this task.

Task 2 – Collaged Study

Using the guide principles of graphic design : Proximity / White space / Alignment / Contrast / Hierarchy / Repetition, you
will utilise ink onto a printed text ground, making abstract shapes in 4 x colours ready to collage when dry.

Task 3 – Hunt / Gather / Research

Now… You will visit the library, using the black and white (free) photocopiers to scan images, text and surface from
the books on the shelves. Remember to make a note of your sources as a full reference list is required to pass this
project: you cannot pass this project unless you reference your images. Refer to the powerpoint to remind
yourself about the legal issues for collage work.

Task 4 – Extended Study

Now is the point to make decisions about your intention! Do you want to continue to work in an abstract way or do
you want to work with narrative collage? Either way: using the images and text from your hunting and gathering,
colour your B&W using the ink and pigment provided and then cut / stick / layer into a collage. Ensure you write
about your intention in your Weebly analysis.
