Introduce children to the work of Andy Warhol. Show them examples and read his biography on the Masterclass website. Encourage children to use a dictionary to find the meanings of any words that are new to them.
2. The main activity Divide the children into four groups. Group 1: Children use Masterclass on the GridClub website to recreate a pattern of images in the style of Warhol, save them and print them out. Group 2: Work with the images they have brought in from home. Trace over in pencil and scan into the computer. Save and manipulate the image by changing the colour density. Save four separate copies of the same image (different colours) and print each one out. Place them onto a coloured sheet of backing paper and when youre happy with the layout, glue and display. Group 3: Choose a can and make a sketch using a 2B pencil. Younger children may need a photocopiable outline of a can as a basis. Remind them not to shade inside the can but to try and copy the writing and any other image. Check there are no gaps. Scan the drawing and save as a bitmap file. Using any Paint package, choose the fill tool to add colour to the work and save. Copy the image, change the colour and save again. Repeat until there are four separate images. Print out each image and, as before, glue onto backing paper. Group 4: Use a digital camera to take a picture of a friend or object. Copy onto computer and save. Copy the image again and manipulate it using the various effects controls in the paint package. Encourage experimentation. Ask children to write down each step they take so they can repeat the whole process at any time in the future. NB If children are waiting to use the scanner or software, encourage them to make drawings from Warhol images. Colour using felt pen or oil pastels. 3. Plenary and follow-up Assessment opportunity Homework opportunity Discuss the different methods used which worked well, which proved difficult and suggest ways of overcoming difficulties or improving work. Comment on the differences and similarities between their own work and that of the artist. Use the internet or visit the library to find out facts about pop art and other artists who contributed to this movement.
