Title of Learning Segment: Patriotic Printmaking and Collage Grade: 5th

Prior Knowledge- American flag colors/patriotism/collage/printmaking (at fifth grade students

should be familiar with this.

Central Focus/Big Idea: Use printmaking and collage to recreate and represent the American
flag, through use of the elements of art.

Learning Segment Overview (45 minute class periods)

Lesson 1 (Day 1)

1. Introduce lesson on the American flag, how it has evolved, people who created it and
re-created it: Betsy Ross, Jasper Johns. Read handout I have on how the flag evolved
(change in number of stripes and stars as America grew).
2. Show students pictures of Americana textiles from the Springs Creative Archives in Rock
Hill, SC.
3. Styrofoam printmaking lesson. One piece of styrofoam per student. One rectangular
piece of paper per student. Use mechanical pencils without the lead to create design in
styrofoam. Use Crayola washable markers in red and blue on styrofoam and then print
on paper (dampen with spray bottle).
4. Print design 4 times within the rectangular paper.

Lesson 2 (Days 2-3)

1. Take prints from last class and draw over them with red and blue crayola markers and
white paint pens or gel pens. Students can trace design/pattern to outline shapes and
add emphasis. This step will help the prints look more complete.
2. Next, I will teach a lesson on collage. What students will use to collage: Americana
printed papers and fabric swatches and stickers. I will also provide printed out pictures of
patriotic images. They will also write a list of words they think describe America and cut
out the words to use in the collage. They also have the option to write the words directly
onto the collage. They will glue all of these down and then use glossy modge podge over
the top of them.
3. Students will be given a piece of paper larger than their rectangular printed paper. The
students will create a collage that goes around the border of the new piece of paper. I
will have drawn the border/parameters in this ahead of time to save time. Then students
will glue their print onto the center of this paper (collage is the border, it will stick out on
all four sides from under the print).
4. These artworks will be on display in the Winthrop Art Education Fall 2020 Exhibition.

Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks (Procedures & Timelines)

● Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks should match Objectives & Standards. This is
the heart of the plan. It is your script. Write so it is a clear, concise, yet thorough sequence.
● Include enough detail so that anyone who is well-educated could follow your plan.
● Include Introduction, reflective questions, & enough activities to adequately address your
objectives. They must be developmentally appropriate for grade level.
● Add at least 2 references from theory to practice
● Be very specific in this section, particularly with transitions. E.g. Can vary based on lesson:
o Focus/review OR INTRO
o Share objectives
o Teacher instructions Or I DO
o Guided practice We do
o Independent practice YOU DO
o Connecting/sharing/presenting
o Closure/ review

Accommodations Universal Design for Learning used in this art lesson.
