LESSON PLAN FORMAT

I. Title

Torn Paper Collage

II. Grade:

Art 1

III. TEKS: 117.202 Art

IV. Objectives:

The student will learn how to create a collage as assessed by creating a full color image by tearing and
gluing paper from a magazine to create an original artwork.

V. Activity:

Students will be given poster/tag board. Onto this base the students will transfer their design in pencil.
Students will then fill in their design by tearing and gluing paper from a magazine to fill in their
artwork.

VI. Instruction:

Day 1:
-Discuss the art of torn paper collage. Show PowerPoint while discussing examples and the how tos of
the project.

-Ask students to choose 3 of their FAVORITE OBJECTS to draw, and create a thumbnail for EACH
ONE. (Think about composition, color, proportion, emphasis, and layout of your overall design). These
thumbnails should be colored in.

Day 2:
-Ask students to choose their favorite of the 3 thumbnails, and transfer the image onto the poster board
with a pencil. The drawing should be SIMPLE and NEAT. (Think basic outline and shapes)

-Distribute individual pieces of poster/tag board. Have students transfer their designs from their
sketchbooks to the poster board using pencils.

-Demonstrate the technique for tearing paper and how to apply it by using a glue stick. Talk about how
to use a variety of colors and a variety of tints and shades. The torn pieces of paper should be no bigger
than the size of a quarter.

Day 3-8:
-Continue working through the rest of the design, applying glue and paper in small amounts so that it
does not get to messy. The paper should overlap as to show no poster board in the background.
