Preface

The CTS-9006/ CTS-9009 digital ultrasonic flaw detector is the perfect combination of various

advanced modern technologies such as ultrasonic flaw detection, computer, electronics, mould,

techniques. Therefore we present a series of digital ultrasonic flaw detectors with higher
performance and more powerful functions to the industry.

Main features of the CTS-9006/ CTS-9009 digital ultrasonic flaw detector:

1) Small size —— The dimension of the whole unit is 152mm ×240mm×52mm (W×H×D). This is the

smallest size among all flaw detectors with a 5.7-inch monitor.

2) Light weight —— The total weight of the unit (including b

battery)
attery) is 1.15kg only
on ly..

3) Low consumption —— Given that the system has small size and light weight, a fully-recharged

battery can support the system to work continuously over 7 hours.

4) High performance ——The main technical specifications, such as detection sensitivity sur
surplus,
plus,
vertical linearity, horizontal linearity and dynamic range, are much better than the requirements

of China’s national standard.

5) Rich functions —— The system is featured with USB port, auto gain control, peak memory,
memory, DAC,

 A
 AVG
VG.. Moreover, the CTS-9009 has many additional functions, such as network communication,

【Note 2】: The AVG

AVG curves are calculated based on theoretical formula, which is valid for the
th e area

beyond three times of near field only. It is a straight line in the area within three times of

near field.

 AVG_L1, AVG_L2
 AVG_L2  and
 and AVG_L3
AVG_L3 respectively and adjust their values.

7) Input Compensation
C ompensation Value

When the echo amplitude of the reference test block or the workpiece does not comply with the
theoretical value, compensation is required to compensate the value difference. This is a

common practice when a broad flat bottom is used for reference. Because the broad flat bottom

echo amplitude usually does not reach the theoretical difference of amplitude for the echo of the

same-distance flat-bottom hole, if the broad flat bottom amplitude is used as a reference, the

calculated flat-bottom equivalent value in actual testing will be inaccurate.

Therefore, in situations when the broad flat bottom echo is used as a reference, it is

recommended to input the error (between the actual difference of the reference broad flat-bottom

echo amplitude and the flat-bottom test block amplitude with the same-distance, which can be
calculated with the theoretical formula) as compensation. Input the compensation to bring the

calculation more accurate.

8) Select the submenu GAStart . Adjust gate start position and hitch the gate to the echo to be

workpieces can be saved to records (datasets). Before testing, the corresponding saved records can
be recalled. After releasing the freeze state, testing is available immediately. Thus toggle between

different test states is very fast, which allows easy management and less complicated calibration on

the system.

3.6 System Parameter Setup Specific to Testing

Testing

1) For large workpieces

wor kpieces or coarse-crystal material testing or when high sensitivity is required, set

Power  at
 at High and Damping  at
at Low , so as to increase system test sensitivity.

2) For situations of thin workpiece testing or high resolution is required,

required , set Power   at
at Low  and
 and

Damping  at
at High, so as to increase system test resolution but the test sensitivity will decrease

accordingly. When testing with a narrow-pulse probe, set Rectify   at

at Pos. or Neg. to further

increase resolution.

3) Usually PRF  is
 is set 6 .

4) Determine system frequency setup based on the rated frequency of the selected probe. For a

2.5MHz probe, the test sensitivity surplus for the step 1~4MHz  is
 is the highest among the

available frequency range.

5) Generall
 Generallyy, Rej  is
 is set 0%.

3.7 Using Battery to Increase Anti-interference

When the AC power grid receives strong interference, please use battery for power supply. The

power supply from battery effectively cuts off interference signals from AC power grid, while other

external interference signals will not easily affect the system.

3.8 Application of PeakEnvelop

When PeakEnv. function is enabled, the screen will record the peak values corresponding to all

points in horizontal direction within the display range, and display these points in different colors.

When higher echoes appear, the corresponding peaks of those positions are refreshed, otherwise
they remain unchanged. This application is mainly used for positioning in angle-probe testing and

displaying echo envelope.

3.9 Application of PeakEcho

When PeakEcho function is enabled, the screen will record the peak echoes for all echoes (except

for initial wave) within the display range, and display these echoes in different colors. When higher

echoes appear, all echoes recorded will be refreshed, otherwise they remain unchanged. This

application is mainly used for making DAC curves.

echo and read from the measurement data area), determine whether it is a defect echo and

calculate its equivalent (If AVG curves are adopted, the flat-bottom hole equivalent to the echo

amplitude can be read from the system measurement data area directly), and then process the

workpiece based on the applicable standard.

4.2 Testing with An Angle Probe

General testing steps with an angle probe:

1) Setup system initial parameters ( Rng , Vel , Dly , PRF , Band , Power , Damping , Thk )

2) Correct system zero and velocity (usually only the system zero can be corrected). Please refer to

2.12 Auto Correction.

3) Use a ruler to measure the probe flank( X_Value)and input it in the system.

4) Input the probe nominal  Angle or KValue (If the user is demanding on measurement result, the

b)  Check if Angle or KValue is not inputted or incorrect;

c)  Check if Zero is not inputted or incorrect;

d)  Check if   X_Value  is inputted correctly; When  X_Value  is 0, the measurement reading

refers to the horizontal distance between the incident point of probe beam and the flaw,
otherwise, it refers to the horizontal distance between the probe flank and the flaw;

e)  Check whether the gate hitches the echo to be tested or there are clutters with higher

echo amplitude. By measuring PeakEcho within gate, only when the echo being hitched

by the gate properly, can accurate calculation result comes out.

f )  When measuring a round-hole flaw,

flaw, the horizontal distance to be measured is between

the flaw (beam reflection point) and the probe, rather than between the round-hole center

and the probe. Otherwise, the bigger the round-hole diameter is, the bigger the error will

be.

The upper and lower limits are set in the submenus Ref1, U_Limit   and

L_Limit . The limit range is: Ref1+ L_Limit <= Thickness measured <=

Ref1+ U_Limit.

f )  Save

Select the submenu Op. , then you may choose the following operation:

1)  Clear: Select it and press , and all the measurement results in the memory will

be cleared.

2)  Save:

 A. Set save interval

Save interval may be set in the submenu SaveIntv , and the default is 5S, i.e.

save once every 5 seconds.

B. Select save method

- SaveInside: To save measured vales to the inside memory, and up to 2,000

data can be saved.

- SaveFlash: To save measured vales to the USB storage, and the capacity is

subject to the USB disk size.

Select either of the option and then press . If the system is not in save state, it

will go to save state, otherwise it will cancel the save state.

and the coupling is good, it will give out a Di sound for each measurement; when Limit

is used, for measurement results exceeding the limit, the system will give out a long

alarm, otherwise the alarm will be a Di sound, which means the coupling is good.

【Note 2】: The measurement method Min refers to the minimum value measured when coupled,

i.e. the minimum value measured when the probe moves on the tested piece (without

moving away from the tested surface), but not the minimum value being always

displayed. If the probe moves away from the tested surface or the coupling is not good,

the minimum shall be recalculated.
