Research Methodology

A. Research Design

This research aimed to find the students’ perception about explicit and implicit

methods in learning Tenses in SMP DDI Mangkoso in order to find out the result the

writer used mix method approach. Mixed method is a research in which the researcher

collects, analyzes and mixes both quantitative and qualitative data in a single study or

multiphase program of inquiry (Burke, Anthony & Turner, 2007: 112).

B. Subject of Research

The writer took two classes were only provided for taking the sample of data

analysis. Male and female students are placed in separate classes. Male class is VIII/a

consist of 18 students and female class is VIII/b consist of 8 students. The writer applied

an implicit method to the teaching of tenses in class VIII/a. While the explicit method was

applied to the teaching of tenses in class VIII/b.

C. Time and Place of Research

This research conducted at SMP DDI Mangkoso, which is located in Mangkoso,

Ajjakkang village, Soppeng Riaja regency, Barru district, South Sulawesi province and

this research have done on April until May 2022.

D. Data Collection Technique

The data collection was conducted in two ways based on implicit and explicit

methods. The first is the writer gave pre-test for the student in each class. The second is

the writer teached and explained the formula of tenses first using the formula of tenses

table that had been explained used to explicit and implicit methods. The third is she

students then wrote a sentence using the tenses formula that had been explained. In the

implicit method class, the writer showed a short audio-visual material about English daily

conversation by Boston English centre and asked the students to read a conversation
paper using the tenses based on what they have seen and understood from the audio-

visual material. the fourth is the writer also gave daily practice and post-test. After

collecting the data, the last is the writer analyzed and determined the results of the

research.

E. Research Instruments

1. Pre-Test and Post-Test

Pre-Test is given to the students before the implementation of tenses materials using

explicit and implicit method and Post-test is given afterward. Pre-test and post-test are

conducted to compare the students’ ability in learning tenses.

2. Audio-visual material

Audio-visual material is used to support the implementation of implicit method in

teaching tenses. The video which is shown is about English daily conversation by

Boston English Centre that is taken from Youtube. Boston English Center is a channel

that helps to learn conversational English. This channel joined Youtube on January

17th 2017. The researcher uses a video source entitled "Everyday English

Conversation" from the Boston English Center channel as a research tool for implicit

methods.

3. Table of Tenses Formula

The writer uses Table of Tenses Formula to support the implementation of explicit

method in teaching tenses class. This table is distributed to the students before the

class starts.

4. Speaker and Projector

Speaker and projector are applied to support the implementation of implicit method in

teaching tenses.
5. Questionnaire

The writer has applied questionnaire to find out the level of satisfaction of the whole

students after learning tenses using explicit and implicit methods in each class.
