Basic Electronic Equipment and Hand Tools

Assembling electronics project and making it works is a good start in helping one to
learn troubleshooting methods as well as becoming familiar with your tools, test
equipment, electronic schematics, and component color codes.

It is hard to do a good job of electronics construction unless proper electronic tools

and knowledge of using them are adequate.

8
COMMON TOOLS

Wire cutter – is a tool used to cut or trim connected

wires or terminal leads in the circuit board.

Needle-Nose Pliers – is a tool used to hold, bend,

and stretch electronic component and wires.

Flat Head Screwdriver – is a tool used to fasten and

loosen negative slotted screw.

Philips Screwdriver – is a tool used to loosen or

fasten the cross head slotted screw.

resistance, current and voltage.

Portable Electric Hand drill – is an electronic equipment

that makes a hole in the plastics chassis or metal chassis.

10
ACTIVITY 2:

Directions: Write T if the statement is true and F if the statement is false. Write your answer
on a separate sheet of paper.

iron.
_____ 2. Sandro used soldering iron and soldering lead in fixing the wire connections of
his stereo.
_____ 3. In testing an electronic components multimeter is the best tool to be used.
_____ 4. Peter used the wire cutter to cut wires.
_____ 5. Dominador used the multi-volts power supply to test the resistor.

Electrical wiring connects to switches, outlets, appliances, disconnects, meters, and

circuit breakers. Whether adding new electrical gear or rewiring is involved, the necessities
for a uniform and safe electrical connection are the identical. You would like the acceptable
wire, fittings, and a several of cheap hand tools.

Types of Wire Joints & Splices

A splice joint is a method of joining two members end to end in woodworking. The splice
joint is used when the material being joined is not available in the length required. It is an
alternative to other joints such as the butt joint and the scarf joint. Splice joints are stronger
than unenforced butt joints and have the potential to be stronger than a scarf joint.

You may need to create wire joints and splices in making wiring connections at home.
There are kinds of splices and joints in wire. An effective wire splice or joint will be protected
even before soldering. The soldering will serve as an extra protection and prevention of
corrosion in the joint. Splices and joints in solid wire should also be enclosed with electrical
tape for safety.

When working with electricity, it is necessary to be extremely careful. When splicing wires,
it is very important to keep in mind the risks, especially if the component composed of high
voltage. Turn off the power, including the fuse, wear gloves, never work near water and
always check your work before turning the electricity back on.

11
WESTERN UNION SHORT TIE – is formed by
twisting tightly the two ends of a wire together.
Next, use needle-nose pliers to twist both ends
tightly at least five turns.

RAT TAIL JOINT – is made by connecting two

or more wires and wrapped them symmetrically
in a common axis.

KNOTTED TAP JOINT – is made by

connecting a branch wire to a continuous wire.
Take out about 1 inch of insulation from the
main wire and 3 inches from the branch wire.

FIXTURE JOINT – This joint need five inches

of insulation stripped off the wire. The wires are
twisted a few times with a pair of pliers for the
joint to be tight.

12
Soldering

Soldering is a joining process used to join different types of metals together by melting
solder. Solder is a metal alloy usually made of tin and lead which is melted using a hot iron.

Soldering Process

Before you can start soldering, you need to prep your soldering iron by tinning the tip
with solder. This process will help improve the heat transfer from the iron to the item you are
soldering. Tinning will also help to protect the tip and reduce wear.

Step 1: Mount the Component –

Begin by inserting the leads of the
LED into the holes of the circuit
board. Flip the board over and bend
the leads outward at a 45′ angle. This
will help the component make a
better connection with the copper
pad and prevent it from falling out
while soldering.

Step 2: Heat the Joint – Turn your

soldering iron on and if it has an
adjustable heat control. At this point, touch the tip of the iron to the copper pad and the resistor
lead at the same time. You need to hold the soldering iron in place for 3-4 seconds to heat
the pad and the lead.

Step 3: Apply Solder to Joint – Continue holding the soldering iron on the copper pad and the
lead and touch your solder to the joint. IMPORTANT – Do not touch the solder directly to the
tip of the iron. You want the joint to be hot enough to melt the solder when it is touched. If the
joint is too cold, it will form a bad connection.

Step 4: Snip the Leads – Remove the soldering iron and let the solder cool down naturally.
Do not blow on the solder as this will cause a bad joint. Once cool, you can snip the extra wire
from leads.
