• Exam duration: 80 minutes.

• Only calculators allowed by the Faculty of Sciences (Texas Instruments TI-30, TI-34
and Casio fx-260, fx-300) are authorized. Books and notes are not permitted.

• Solve each problem in the space provided. Use the back of the page for scratch work
if necessary.

• Each problem requires a complete, clearly written solution. Partial marks will be
assigned for significant, but incomplete, progress toward a solution. Zero credit will
be given for unsupported answers unless otherwise noted.
1. [4 pts]
Z 7
33
(a) Why is 7 dx an improper integral? If it is convergent, compute its value. If
1 (x − 2) 3
not, explain why it is divergent.

Z ∞
5 + sin(2013x)
(b) Determine if dx is convergent or divergent using an appropriate
3 x2 + x4
comparison test.
2. [4 pts] Sketch the region bounded by the curves y = x2 and y = 20 − x2 . Find the area
of the region.
3. [4 pts] Use the method of the cylindrical shells to compute the volume of the solid obtained
when the region bounded by y = x, x = 1, x = 3, y = x1 is rotated about the y-axis. Include
a sketch of the region, solid, shell with dimensions.
4. [4 pts] A blue rope of length 20 m has a density of 1.7 kg m
and is hanging over the edge
of a tall building. How much work is done pulling the rope to the top of the building? The
acceleration of gravity is g = 9.8 sm2 . Define clearly all variables that are used in your solution;
draw a diagram.
5. [4 pts]
(a) Find the average value of f (x) = x sin(x) on the interval [1, 2].

dy
(b) Solve 2(1 + x2 ) dx = y 7 , y(0) = 1.
