Mutation – A mutation is a change in the Dna sequence of a gene. Although a mutation can alter one
alleie into another, the overall consequence is a shift in frequency. Because mutation causes a modest
change in frequency, it has a minor impact on evolution until it interacts with another factor, such as
selection.
Gene flow – Evolution is also caused by the transfer of genes from one population to another. This gene
flow occurs anywhere there is migration. Even if no additional evolutionary mechanisms are in play, the
loss or addition of individuals can quickly alter gene pool frequencies.
Recombination – At the onset of meiosis, when the ends of chromosomes separate and attach to their
homologous chromosomes, a new combination of existing genes is produced. The unlinking and
recombination of parental genes occurs during the crossing over process.
Genetic drift – Genetic drift is a form of evolution. It refers to accidental events that generate
unpredictable fluctuations in allele frequencies from generation to generation. As a result of genetic
drift, traits can become dominant or disappear in a population. Small populations are the most affected
by genetic drift.

Activity 5 deepening
1. The main distinction between gene flow and genetic drift is that gene flow refers to the
movement of genes across populations, whereas genetic drift refers to the change of allele
frequencies in small populations, allowing alleles to disappear.
2. Evolution does not stop once a species becomes a species. Every population of living organisms
is undergoing some sort of evolution, though the degree and speed of the process varies greatly
from one group to another.
