Experiment No:
Aim:
To show how earthquake is detected and recorded on seismograph.

Theory:
1. An earthquake is a sudden shaking or trembling of the Earth.
2. Earthquakes are caused by a disturbance deep inside the Earth’s
crust.
3. Earth has 3 layers, of which, crust is the outermost layer.
4. Crust is fragmented and each fragment is called a tectonic plate.
These plates move continuously. We are unable to feel this
movement because it is very slow.
When these plates brush past one another, or a plate goes under
another plate due to collision, cause disturbance in the earth’s
crust. This movement of tectonic plates results in earthquakes,
volcano eruptions, tsunamis etc.,
5. The power of an earthquake is expressed in terms of magnitude on
a scale called Richter Scale.

Procedure:
Seismograph is the instrument which is used to detect and record earthquakes
which are also known as seismic waves.
This instrument consists of a vibrating rod or a pendulum mounted on a support
base, a rotating drum with a paper on it. A pen is attached to the vibrating
system which is known as the recorder. When the ground vibrates, the
pendulum remains still while the recorder (pen) moves, thus creating a record of
earth’s movements.

Result:
Earthquakes of magnitude higher than 7 on Richter Scale can cause a lot of
destruction.
