The White Horse of Uffington

The oldest hill figure in Britain, the White Horse of
Uffington is a stylised representation of a horse (or dragon)
cut in the turf to reveal the white chalk bedrock. The hill
figure is thought to date from the Iron Age possibly around
1000BC, coins have been found from this time showing a
similar depiction of a horse.
According to folklore the horse was either created by
Hengist, a fifth century Saxon leader, or by Alfred the Great.
The white horse seems to have been the focus of ritual
activity and celebration for several centuries. Until quite
recently a two day festival was held every seven years called
the scouring of the white horse . The white horse was re-cut
and local people celebrated with dancing, wrestling, fencing
and cheese rolling .
Loch Ness
The most well known of the lake monsters, Nessie has
captured the popular imagination. There are hundreds of
sightings , which describe a roughly similar creature in and
out of the water over a period of 200 years. However, the
nature of these sightings has not been adequately resolved,
and there are numerous theories to explain and explain the
evidence. The most popular of these is the survival of an
aquatic dinosaur, which like most theories has many
problems. To other people the answer is more metaphysical
or psychological in origin. The first real scientific
investigation took place in June and July of 1960, and
involved students from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
The loch was examined with echo sounding equipment and
cameras attached to boats. There were a few minor sightings
of 'something', but the project did not do anything to solve
the mystery
Restored in the 1860s, this 23.8m (78-foot) perfect
circle is Cornwall's pride and joy. Each of the nineteen
stones is about 1.2m (4 feet) high, and evenly spaced at
about 3.7m (12-foot) intervals. There is a larger gap 6.2
(20 feet) located at the east, which may indicate an
astronomically-related entrance to the circle. There is a
well-known tradition that the stones represent maidens
who were turned into stone for dancing on the
Sabbath.
Berry Pomeroy Castle is reputed to be one of the most
haunted in the British Isles.It has been the scene of
numerous ghostly sightings and strange phenomena. The
most enduring ghosts seem to be the terrifying White Lady
and Blue Lady. The White Lady haunts the dark dungeons,
and rises from St Margaret's Tower where she has been seen
beckoning to witnesses. According to the legend she is the
spirit of Margaret Pomeroy, who was imprisoned in the
dungeons by her sister Eleanor. Eleanor was jealous of her
beauty and her affections for the man she wanted. Margaret
slowly starved in the dungeons, a long and painful death.
Whether she is the source of the feeling of unease and horror
some people experience at the castle is unknown.
The Blue Lady is not confined to specific areas of the castle
and is supposed to lure people into parts of the ruin.
Traditionally she is seen as the ghost of the daughter of one
of the Norman Lords of the castle. She was raped by her
father, who then strangled her in one of the upper rooms.
