Lesson 4. Mensuration Problems

FIRST QUARTER, SY2022-2023 GED 102 WEEK 5

Highlights

A. What is mensuration?

Mensuration is the theory of measurements. It tackles the three dimensions

of measurements namely the one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-
dimensional.

B. Give 5 examples of plane figures.

1. Triangles
2. Squares
3. Rectangles
4. Circles
5. Pentagon

C. Give 5 examples of solid figures.

1. Sphere
2. Pyramid
3. Cube
4. Prism
5. Cylinder

D. Give the formula for the following:

1. Area of a regular polygon

A = 0.5(base x height)

2. Volume of a Prism

V = base x height

3. Volume of a Pyramid

V = (Base Length x Base Width x Pyramid Height)/3

Lesson 5. Analytic Geometry and Trigonometry Problems

Highlights

A. Write three (3) specific areas where Trigonometry can be applied.

1. Measuring the height of the building

2. The angle of a plane when it takes off and starts to land
3. The angle of elevation of an escalator

B. What is analytic geometry?

Analytic geometry also known as Coordinate Geometry or Cartesian

Geometry, analyzes the geometric figures using the coordinate system.

C. What are the ways of writing the equations of a circle?

1. General Form: x2 + y2 + Cx + Dy + F = 0
2. Standard Form: (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
3. Center-Radius Form: (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
4. Unit Circle: (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = 1 & x2 + y2 = 1

D. Define the three conic sections and write their equations.

1. Parabola : the set of points equidistant from a fixed point (focus) and a
fixed line (directrix).

Equation: Ax2 + By2 + Cx + Dy + E = 0

By2 + Cx + Dy + E = 0

2. Ellipse : the sum of the distances from two fixed points is constant.

Equation: Ax2 + By2 + Cx + Dy + E = 0

3. Hyperbola : the difference between the distances from two fixed points
is constant.

Equation: Ax2 – By2 + Cx + Dy + E = 0

By2 – Ax2 + Cx + Dy + E = 0

Lesson 6. EQUATIONS
FIRST QUARTER, SY2022-2023 GED 102 WEEK 5

Highlights

A. What is an equation?

An equation is a mathematical expression that expresses quantity equality. It

can be denoted as the answer to all mathematical problems by applying
various algebraic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division.

B. Explain the difference between a linear and a quadratic equation in terms of

degree and solution.

Linear Equation Quadratic Equation

● an equation where the highest ● an equation where the highest

degree of the unknown variable degree of the unknown variable
is one is two

● a degree of one equation when ● a second degree polynomial if

the products has no variables there are exponent of any
and the variable’s exponent is variable that is two (2); the
one (1). highest exponent among the
variables.

● produces a straight line when ● produces a parabola when

C. Give a concise definition of the following:

1. Rate

○ a comparison of two quantities that have different units. Rate is most

likely written in fraction form. Unit rate is when the denominator is 1.

2. Ratio
FIRST QUARTER, SY2022-2023 GED 102 WEEK 5

○ a comparison of two quantities that have the same unit. It is most

likely written in fractions , the colon (:) is used to separate numbers
(a:b), or using the word “is to” (a is to b).

3. Proportion

○ an equation that asserts that two rates or ratios are equivalent. If

(a/b) and (c/d) are equal rates or rates, then (a/b) = (c/d) is a
proportion.
