Objective setting, plot, problem, and solution.

Materials Chart Paper, Worksheets, “The Puddle Puzzle” by Ellen Weiss, Answer Sheets for small

group, Anchor Chart, Markers

Purpose Being able to identify and define the elements of a story aids in comprehension as well

as to a deeper understanding of the text that is being read.

Instruction Mini Lesson/ Introduction of learning objective:

Prior to getting into our read aloud for the day, introduce the strategy that we’ll be

working on in this lesson. We will be using the following short story to discuss the 5 story

elements we will be focusing on.

Go over the definitions of each story element, allowing the students to try and define

each element themselves. We will then identify each element in the story together.

Transition students to circle for read-aloud

Introduction of story:

Hook/Turn and Talk: Questions related to puddles

“Have you ever seen a puddle?”

“What do you do when you see one?”

The lesson will start with a read aloud of the play “The Puddle Puzzle”. Students will be

given roles which they will be responsible to read.

Independent Practice:

Students will be provided with worksheets which they will complete using the story.

*2 different worksheets- One requires more writing, the other allows for drawings

Small group:

A handful of the students who experience a language barrier, have lower reading levels,

and showed struggles with pre-assessment, will work together alongside the teacher to
complete the class work. The worksheet will be written on chart paper allowing the

students to all be able to look at the work they are collectively working on. They will also

be provided with an answer sheet with a few answer choices, for each element, from

which they will work with each other to find the correct answer. They will work in pairs.
Students who aren’t working in the small group can work independently or in pairs.

Learning Task Students will independently work on given worksheets in which they will identify the 5

different story elements after reading and discussing “The Puddle Puzzle”

Closing/Debrief Once the time is up for students to work on their worksheets, we’ll come back together

as a class and go over what the students have written for each element. *If students

have not completed the sheet, they will complete it as we review and discuss or finish it

at a later time* Only if necessary, while doing this we will also review the definitions of

each of the story elements.

Assessments Pre Assessment: fill in the blank worksheet

Post Assessment: Worksheet that is completed during lesson

On the spot assessment: addressing any misconceptions on the spot while students are
working.

Differentiation -2 different worksheets will be provided. Each benefiting specific needs.

-teacher will work with a small group in which the work will be broken down in a way

where the group of students can work together to fill out each section.
