Parts and Functions of the Microscope

1. What is the main purpose of a microscope?

The main purpose of a microscope is to be used in viewing the structure and function of
matter in microscopic detail. In that sense, this allows scientists to learn more about the
molecules, proteins, and other small objects that make up our world. Microscopes are
also used to study the structure of viruses and other diseases.

2. What is the purpose of objective lenses?

Objective lenses are used to see things clearly and concisely. They allow us to see
details that would otherwise be obscured. The lenses also help us focus on things and
make them more visible.

3. What is the difference between the microscope's magnifying, illuminating, and

mechanical parts?

Mechanical Parts- refer to the parts that serve as the framework of the apparatus.

Illuminating or optical parts- produce light entering the microscope.

Magnifying Parts- enlarge or magnify the object parts of magnifying parts in the
microscope.

4. Which objective lens is used for initial focusing?

When focusing on a slide, make sure to start with either the 4X or 10X objective .

5. What part of the microscope is used to adjust the amount of light?

The microscope must be adjusted for the greatest amount of light. When looking through
a microscope, the user needs to adjust the eyepiece to get the most light.

6. Which knob is used to move the tube upwards or downwards to focus the scanning lens
quickly?

The coarse adjustment knob is used to move the tube upwards and downwards to focus
the scanning lens. This knob is located on the microscope’s arm and elevates or lowers
the stage to make the specimen into focus or clearer in view of the observer.

7. Which knob is used to focus the higher magnification lenses slowly?

The fine-adjustment knob on a light microscope focuses by moving the lens slowly and
is used to focus on the specimen more clearly.
