EATING DISORDERS
DEFINITION:

Eating disorders are serious conditions related to eating behaviours that negatively affect your
health, emotions and ability to function in important areas of your life.

Most eating disorders are characterised by excessive focus on weight, body shape and food,
resulting in risky eating behaviours. These behaviours can have a significant impact on the
body's ability to obtain adequate nutrition. Eating disorders can cause damage to the heart,
digestive system, bones, teeth and mouth, and lead to other diseases.

These disorders often manifest in adolescence and early adulthood, although they can appear
at other ages. With treatment, you can return to healthier eating habits and sometimes
reverse the serious complications caused by the eating disorder.

The most frequent disorders are: Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating.
