Social science philosophy is a subfield of philosophy that studies the ideas, procedures, and logic in the

social sciences. A theory about theories of social life, the philosophy of social science is thus a
metatheoretical endeavor. In order to accomplish their goals, philosophers of social science look into
both the methods used in the social sciences and the nature of the subjects that these disciplines study,
namely, people. The philosophy of social science can be broadly descriptive (discovering the core
conceptual tools in social science and connecting them to the tools used in other human endeavors),
prescriptive (recommending that a particular strategy be used by the social sciences in order to achieve
what the recommender believes social science ought to achieve), or some combination of the two.
