MODULE 2:

The inner packaging surrounds the product and can be designed to protect against many different
circumstances.

             The tertiary functions of packaging are primarily to serve the retail section for they include the
communicative aspects, often referred to as “retail packaging”. Packaging should promote sales and make
the buying process as rational as possible. Appearance, feel, smell, even the acoustics of the package should
appeal to the senses of the consumer, arouse emotions and stimulate them to buy. Printed information on
the labels informs shoppers about the ingredients, shelf life, intended usage, correct preparation and
particular properties of the product.

MODULE 3

A carton is a box or container usually made of liquid packaging board, paperboard and sometimes of
corrugated fiberboard. Many types of cartons are used in packaging. Sometimes a carton is also called a box.

             The packaging used to ship products already in primary packaging. Its main goals are to protect
products and provide branding during shipping and examples of secondary packaging include 12-packs of fish
products. The packaging used most often by warehouses to ship secondary packaging. Its main goal is to
properly protect shipments during their time in transit. Tertiary packaging is typically not seen by consumers.

Examples include the pallets that bulk shipments are placed on, corrugated pads used to separate
layers of boxes and stretch wrap used to secure stacks of cartons. Kraft paper or carton are often laminated
with polyethylene or aluminum foil which render them waterproof. Such material is used for production of
trays for packaging of fresh or frozen products.
