In today’s business world digital technology in all its facets is crucial to


facilitate decision-making, create new business models, and achieve
competitive advantage. This unit, informed by staff research and other
scholarly activities, develops your knowledge and understanding of the
use of digital technology for effective management in a variety of business
settings, as well as enabling you to manage digital technology. Crucially,
you will learn about the role of digital technology in strategy, Internet
marketing, and related areas.
Aims and Relevance The unit takes an integrated approach to critically assess the relationship
between information systems and how they can create a competitive
advantage. The aim is to enable you to understand and critically assess
what information systems are, what key characteristics they have and
what they can (and cannot) do for an organisation.
Successful completion of the unit will give you a comprehensive and
detailed overview of theory and practice and you will acquire a ‘toolkit’ that
provides the basis for understanding the potential – and limitations – of
information systems for business success.

Approach to Learning

This unit, informed by research, is designed to support your critical analysis and evaluation in
practice and to encourage a systematic understanding and critical appreciation of the business
impact of digital technology and how it should be managed in a variety of business settings,
with the aim of maximising a company’s success. This is achieved through real-life case
studies supported by a flipped classroom approach to facilitate peer and tutor interaction. In this

You are required to select a company and evaluate strategic information


systems (SIS) opportunities and its impact on the company’s strategic

should be around 2500 words. Assessment 1 accounts for 40% of the
overall unit grade. (submission week 6 for PT study)

You are required to critically evaluate the strategic information systems


(SIS) opportunities identified in assessment 1. Based on the SIS
opportunities identified related to the selected company you are required
to Design and propose a plan for an information system which can help
solve a problem within the company. Additionally, critically evaluate
challenges related to systems design and analysis.

The proposed design and plan should be presented in a form of a 20-
