My grandfather was a builder. He built this house in 1930.
Ejemplos:
Mr Roldán was arrested in Laos.

This house was built in 1930
(Esta casa fue construida en 1930)
Ejemplo:
The fire was put out quickly (by the firemen)

Ejemplo:
The television has been repaired at last
Ejemplo:
The novel was written by Jenn Crowell

activa o pasiva.
1. It’s a big factory. Three hundred people ________________ (employ) every year.
6. Tom’s parents ______________ (die) when he was very young. He and his sister
_____________ (bring) up by their grandparents.
10. Why _____________________ (Mary / resign)from her job? Didn’t she enjoy it?
11. Why ____________________ (Bill / sack) from his job? What did he do wrong?
13. I saw an accident last night. Somebody ___________ (call) an ambulance but
nobody ______________ (injure) so the ambulance _____________________

ACTIVA:
— They gave Mary a watch (Ellos le dieron un reloj a Mary)
CI CD
ACTIVA
They didn’t offer Jim the job (No le ofrecieron el trabajo a Jim)
PASIVA

ACTIVA
We will send you the invitations as soon as they are ready
PASIVA
You will be sent the invitations as soon as they are ready
Hand (entregar) lend (prestar) offer (ofrecer)
Owe (deber) pass (pasar) promise (prometer)
Pay (pagar) read (leer) refuse (rechazar)
Sell (vender) send (enviar) show (mostrar)
Teach (enseñar) tell (decir) write (escribir)
ACTIVA
They promised the boy a bicycle if he passed the exams
PASIVA
A bicycle was promised to the boy if he passed the exams
The boy was promised a bicycle if he passed the exams
14 TAMadrid
1er cambio.– People say that he is 108 years old (La gente dice que Henry tiene 108 años)
It is said that he is 108 years old (Se dice que Henry tiene 108 años)
People say that Cathy works very hard (La gente dice que Cathy trabaja
muy duro)
It is said that Cathy works very hard (Se dice que Cathy trabaja muy
duro)
People say that Cathy works very hard (Cathy trabaja muy duro)

Algunos ejemplos:
1. The police are looking for a missing boy. People believe that he is wearing a white
pullover and blue jeans.
It is believed that the boy is wearing a white pullover and blue jeans.
The boy is said to be wearing a white pullover and blue jeans.
2. The strike started three weeks ago. People expect that it will end soon.
(La huelga empezó hace tres semanas. La gente espera que termine pronto)
It is expected that the strike will end soon
The strike is expected to end soon
3. Those two houses belong to the same family. People say that there is a secret tun-
nel between them.
It is said that there is a secret tunnel between them
There is said to be a secret tunnel between them

EJERCICIO 4
I’m going to have my room painted
(Voy a pintar mi habitación)
I’m going to decorate my room
(Voy a decorar mi habitación)

HAVE ... DONE.
ellas la estructura HAVE SOMETHING DONE.
8. If you want to wear earrings, why don’t you _______________ (your ears / pierce)?
9. A: Can I see the photographs you took when you were on holiday?
B: I’m afraid I _____________________________ (not / the film / develop) yet.

do de “they had all their money stolen” es: “All their money was stolen from them” (Les fue
demasiado agradable.
Jean has had his car stolen (A Jean le han robado el coche).

U.D. 4.- NUEVAS ESTRUCTURAS SINTÁCTICAS II. LA VOZ PASIVA
USO
My father built this house in 1998 (el sujeto realiza la acción del verbo)
This house was built by my father in 1998 (el sujeto recibe la accción del verbo)
Ejemplo:
Peter gave a flower to Mary (voz activa)
Mary was given a flower (by Peter) (voz pasiva)
A flower was given to Mary (by Peter) (voz pasiva)
