What are the different uses of each member of the Alkene Group?

ETHENE - Ethylene is used as an anaesthetic. Metal Fabrication: Ethylene is used as oxy-fuel gas in metal
cutting, welding and high velocity thermal spraying. Refining: Ethylene is used as refrigerant, especially
in LNG liquefaction plants. Rubber & Plastics: Ethylene is used in the extraction of rubber.

PROPENE - The main uses of refinery propene are in liquefied petroleum gas for thermal use or as an
octane-enhancing component in motor gasoline. Refinery-grade propene can also be used in some
chemical syntheses

BUTENE - is used for the production of a wide variety of chemicals in the gasoline and rubber processing
areas.

PENTENE - n-Pentene is a colorless liquid with a very unpleasant odor. It is used as a pesticide, as an
additive to gasoline, and in the manufacture of other chemicals.

HEXENE - 1-Hexene is a colorless liquid with a gasoline-like odor. It is used in fuels and to make flavors,
perfumes, dyes, and plastic resins.

HEPTENE - . It is used as an additive in lubricants, as a catalyst, and as a surfactant.

OCTENE – is used in the production of synthetic fatty acids mainly used in synthetic lubricants,
plasticizers, surfactants, polyethylene comonomers, elastomers and plastomers, and agrochemicals.

NONENE- Nonene is a chemical intermediate used to produce other chemical intermediates such as
alkyl phenols, isodecyl alcohol, neodecanoic acid and diphenylamine; which are used to make
detergents, cleaners and lubricant antioxidants.

DECENE – It is used as a comonomer in copolymers and is an intermediate in the production of epoxides,

amines, oxo alcohols, synthetic lubricants, synthetic fatty acids and alkylated aromatics.

What are the properties of Alkene Unsaturated Hydrocarbons?

Alkenes contain a carbon-carbon double bond which changes the physical properties of alkenes. Alkenes
are unsaturated carbon compounds which have a general formula of CnH2n. These compounds are also
known as olefins. Alkenes are a family of compounds containing hydrogen and carbon only
(hydrocarbons) with a carbon-carbon double bond. Ethene and Propene are the first two hydrocarbons.
